kushiels-mercyKushiel’s Mercy is the final instalment of Imriel’s trilogy and brings to a conclusion the story of Imriel and Sidonie.  As we’ve come to expect from Carey Kushiel’s Mercy is packed with great world building, evocative writing and strong story telling.

Imriel and Sidonie have both come to realise that their love cannot be denied, the Gods will not allow it and having announced their love for each other the country is torn between those that remember all too well the atrocities  caused by the treachery of Melisande and think that Imriel is foremost his mother’s son and those that want to embrace the romanticism of the pair.  Ysandre decrees that should the young lovers pursue their idea of marriage Sidonie will be disinherited and no longer next in line for the throne.  The solution, Imriel is to seek out his mother Melisande and return her to Terra D’Ange where she will face execution as a traitor.

I won’t elaborate on the plot too much as there are a few twists here and there and I don’t want to ruin them but the story goes in a completely different direction than I anticipated and rather than centring on the search for Melisande it becomes instead a story of dark magic, a nation ensorcelled and a search for magic talisman’s that will lift the curse.

So, instead, a brief discussion on other feelings that this final book raised for me.

I thought the story was very clever although I was surprised at the level of magic used as it seemed a lot stronger than in previous novels which have barely skimmed the magical pool.  I admit that in relation to the actual effects on the people of the City I was dubious and had a number of niggles but setting those aside enabled me to enjoy the plot.  It was really interesting to return to Terra D’Ange and see the effects that the magic had wrought on some of our favourite characters!  I admit that it was difficult to read in some respects.

In terms of the other characters.  We have the introduction of a new pov.  Leander is one of Melisande’s spies and winds up becoming a main pov character for a few of the chapters.  It was really intriguing to be inside his head particularly given his role (which I will remain mysterious about as it would be a spoiler) but I have to credit Carey here with pulling off a completely different feel of character.

Astegal is the main bad guy of the piece.  I found this character a little bit weak if I’m going to be totally honest maybe, that’s just because in terms of being a scheming manipulator he really isn’t a patch on Melisdande.  In fact because of the success of the first three books, and in particular the main characters, this series was always, for me, going to struggle a little.  That being said though, after a little bit of a shaky start to the series, I did end up finding it very entertaining.  Carey is just a wonderful story teller and I think in terms of making this a love story, and more to the point star crossed lovers, it was always going to appeal to some people more than others.  Phèdre and Joscelin love each other but the focus of their stories was not the love they had for each other whereas this series centres quite strongly on Imriel and Sidonie and their almost impossible love affair.

I think the side of this story that I enjoyed the most was the meeting between Melisande and Imriel.  It felt like I’d been anticipating this for such a long time that I wondered whether Carey would manage to pull the scene off.  I think she did.  Melisande has got to be one of the best villains around.  To be honest I wished that she’d played a bigger role in the story but even as it was I did enjoy this meeting.

The other surprise for me was Barquiel L’Envers and the role that he played in Imriel’s success.  It was a pleasant surprise to be honest as he’d always been a little bit like the thorn in the side so it was good to see that he could be convinced of the truth of something.

Overall, I really enjoyed this series.  There’s plenty going on and the writing is really good. Did I enjoy it as much as reading about Phèdre and Joscelin adventures, in fairness, no, but I’m glad I read on and I’m looking forward to the next series which I understand jumps us forward considerably and brings a new cast of characters into play.

Versatile? Me??

I was nominated recently by Birdie Bookworm for the Versatile Blogger Award. Thank you so much for the nomination you lovely blogger you.  Here’s the gen:

versatileRULES:

  1. Display Award (ahem, above)
  2. Thank the person who gave this award (and include a link to their blog.)(Also above).
  3. Share seven things about yourself. (below)
  4. Nominate ten bloggers.(more about that shortly…)

SEVEN FACTS ABOUT ME :

  1. I’m a basically grumpy, curmudgeonly type.  This is not an opinion but a bona fide fact.  I don’t like mornings.  I resent getting out of bed and I really don’t want to be sociable until I’ve drank A LOT of coffee.  I just don’t understand why we have mornings – they should be part of our sleeping time.  What is the point, really.  Explain it to me.  Why?
  2. That takes me onto point two.  I don’t drink coffee after lunchtime.  It keeps me awake at night if I do.  Coffee is for the morning.  Tea is for the  afternoon.  Them’s the rules.  Biscuits also sometimes come into play.  Custard creams!  Yes, that is a type of biscuit – if all else fails Bourbons (Lisa – I’m looking at you and if you’re reading this you know who you are!)
  3. I pretty much always stay up late at night – which is why I hate getting up in the morning.  I’m a night person.  Staying up until late is my thing.  I’m like an owl.  But I’m also like a bear – I like my sleep  – Im a Browl!   It’s now a thing.
  4. I don’t like seafood but I love fish.  Seafood – well, perhaps I read too many books, but most of it looks like a plate of aliens, with tentacles.  Get away from me.  No.  Just no! It’s wrong.  RUN!
  5. I talk to my dog..  All the time.  This is embarrassing because sometimes I”m out walking him and other people hear.  Why can’t I just learn that lesson.  Doh!
  6. If I could eat trifle for breakfast I would.  I like trifle.  What can I say?  It would have to be good trifle though.  Share your recipes with me if you like.  You can’t have too many good recipes.  I’m not particularly a sweet lover but trifles and cookies – yes.
  7. When I was about 7 years old, I stepped out of the house and something landed on my head (no, not that).  I thought it was a huge bumble bee and ran around the place screaming for about 10 minutes (at least it felt like that but was probably actually closer to 10 seconds – I was 7 and time was all distorted)!  Anyway, once I eventually dragged this tiny thing out of my hair (and it really was clinging on there – plus, my hair was very long) it was a tiny baby blue bird (a blue tit).  Clearly learning how to fly and maybe not quite succeeding.  Long story short I put it in a birdhouse that we already had in the garden (that had never been used I hasten to add) and then watched every day as it’s mum (or dad) came to feed it.  A few days later it was gone.  Hopefully it had flown away under it’s own steam.  I confess I was gutted.  I may have cried a little but nobody saw so it doesn’t count.  I really thought that bird had bonded with me and would return to my windowsill – hah, 7 year old dreams eh!  I still like that that bird landed on my head though, raindrops keep falling on your head – no blue birds!

That’s my seven facts about me – most of them are pretty silly but that’s the way the cookie crumbles (unless it’s gone stale – in which case I wouldn’t eat it for breakfast).

NOMINATIONS:

I actually nominate everyone (in the whole world).  I know that seems like a cop out but basically if you fancy doing a post and letting me (and everyone else) know something about you then go for it.  I love these posts.  I love reading all your answers.  And, I might be a self confessed curmudgeon but I pretty much always try to take part when somebody nominates me for one of these.

Go on now.  Knock yourself out and tell us a few things about you – and, if you do, please leave me a link. Enquiring minds, etc.

Ta. 😀

Cover Reveal: The Dragon’s Blade: Veiled Intentions by Michael R Miller

Today I’m really pleased to be able to reveal the cover for the second book in              Michael R Miller’s Dragon’s Blade series:

The Dragon’s Blade: Veiled Intentions

Firstly, before I tell you anything more about the book lets get to the cover – then we can talk:

DRAGONBLADE_BK2 high res.jpg

And, here are the first and second in series so you can compare the two:

They really are beautiful covers, wonderfully detailed and happily sharing a design that is both consistent and easily recognisable. (For those of you who like to know all the things the designer is Rachel Lawston and this is her website  : http://www.lawstondesign.com/book-design.html.

If you occasionally stop by here you might recall that The Dragon’s Blade The Reborn King was one of the entrants for this year’s SPFBO (details here).  The book was read and reviewed by The Bibliosanctum and the cover was actually the winner of the cover contest that took place as the competition began.  There were some excellent covers this year and a selection of them can be found here.

The Dragon’s Blade Veiled Intentions is due for release on the 10th February 2017 and to whet your appetite here is the description:

Rectar has always had his sights set on conquering the human lands. His demonic invasion of the west is gaining momentum – an unrelenting horde unhindered by food or sleep. Now, only the undermanned Splintering Isles lie between the demons and the human kingdom of Brevia. If the islands fall, the rest of Tenalp will soon follow.

The Three Races must work together if they are to survive, but they have another problem – Castallan. The traitorous wizard has raised a deadly rebellion and declared himself King of Humans. He believes himself safe in the bowels of his impenetrable Bastion fortress, but Darnuir, now King of Dragons, intends to break those walls at all cost.

To face these threats, all dragons, humans and fairies must truly unite; yet old prejudices may undermine Darnuir’s efforts once again. And as the true intentions of all are revealed, so too is a secret that may change the entire world.

Finally, if you’re intending to start this series you might be interested to learn that copies of book No.1 can be purchased for £1 by those readers who sign up to the author’s mailing list.  Author details below:

Friday Firsts: Morning Star (Red Rising #3) by Pierce Brown #RRSciFiMonth

FridayFirsts
Friday Firsts
is a new meme that runs every Friday over on Tenacious Reader. The idea is to feature the first few sentences/paragraph of your current book and try and outline your first impressions as a result. This is a quick and easy way to share a snippet of information about your current read and to perhaps tempt others.  Stop on by and link up with Tenacious Reader.  As this month is Sci fi Month 2016 my book today is a science fiction novel that I’ve been wanting to read for some time.  I’m very excited to pick this one up as it’s the conclusion to a brilliant series and I need to know how it all ends!!

morningstarI rise into darkness, away from the garden they watered with the blood of my friends.  The Golden man who killed my wife lies dead beside me on the cold metal deck, life snuffed out by his own son’s hand.”

Autumn wind whips my hair.  The ship rumbles beneath.  In the distance, friction flames shred the night with brilliant orange.  The Telemanuses descending from orbit to rescue me.  Better that they do not.  Better to let the darkness have me and allow the vultures to squabble over my paralysed body.

My enemy’s voices echo behind me.  Towering demons with the faces of angels.  The smallest of them bends.  Stroking my head as he looks down at his dead father.

“This is always how the story would end,” he says to me.  “Not with your screams.  Not with your rage.  But with your silence.”

My First Impressions

Well, that’s intriguing.  Watch this space!

What are you reading right now? Did it start out strong? Feel free to join in.
