Weekly Wrap Up : 28/01/18
Hi everyone. Hope you’ve had a good week. I’ve had a very quick week and I’m wishing that things would slow down somewhat. But, still good with lots of lovely reading. I’m still reading my book club book – Waking Fire by Anthony Ryan. I’ve started the Chrysalids which I should finish shortly and I’ve read a couple of others. I’ve also started the second of my SPFBO finalists – Chaos Trims My Beard – which so far is living up to it’s crazy name and cover.
Books read:
- The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock Imogen Hermes Gowar – I loved this book – such an unexpected surprise.
- The Belles Dhonielle Clayton – this was a very entertaining, colourful confection of a story. I had mixed feelings going in, lots of descriptions of dresses and hair, etc, and yet it kept me pretty much intrigued.
- The Hazel Wood by Imogen Hermes Gowar – I just finished this and I really liked it. Probably not for everyone. A dark tale, a coming of age of sorts, puts me in mind of The Book of Lost Things.
Next Week’s Reads:
- Chaos Trims My Beard by Brett Herman
- The Chrysalids by John Wyndham (Vintage Sci Fi book)
- The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch
- Semiosis by Sue Burke
- Paris Adrift by E.J. Swift
Clearly I’m not going to get through all of those but they’re my next planned reads, I’m already 30% into Chaos and also started The Chrysalids so I might start them all and see which one takes my fancy.
Upcoming reviews:
- Starborn by Lucy Hounsom
- Envy of Angels by Matt Wallace
- The War of Undoing by Alex Perry (my first SPFBO book)
- The Feed by Nick Clark Windo
- The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock Imogen Hermes Gowar
- The Belles Dhonielle Clayton
- The Hazel Wood by Imogen Hermes Gowar
I’d love to know what you’re reading this week.
Weekly Wrap Up : 21/01/18
‘You shall not pass’ – and ‘It burns us, it freezes us’
Thought I’d share these pictures of Gandalf and Gollum. Hope you’ve all had a good week with plenty going on. I think the biggest event this week was part of the ceiling unexpectedly falling down a couple of days ago! That was novel. On the book side I’ve read two of my expected reads this week and I’ve started a new book. I’m still reading Waking Fire by Anthony Ryan although I need to pick up the pace now and I haven’t managed to start The Chrysalids yet.
Books read:
- The War of Undoing by Alex Perry (my first SPFBO book)
- The Feed by Nick Clark Windo

Weekly Wrap Up : 14/01/18
Hope everyone’s had a good week. I’ve not read as much as I planned. I’ve completed The Girl in the Tower (which was an enchanting read) and I’m about 40% through The War of Undoing which is my first SPFBO book. I’ve also read about 25% of Anthony Ryan’s The Waking Fire as part of the Fantasy Hive’s reading club and so far this is very intriguing and a great read.
Books read:
- The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden (which I’ve already started and reads beautifully)

Next Week’s Reads:
- The War of Undoing by Alex Perry (my first SPFBO book)
- Start The Chrysalids by John Wyndham (Vintage Sci Fi book)

This is my first weekly wrap up of the year. If you celebrate Christmas I hope you had a lovely time and Happy New Year to all of you.
During the past week I’ve read only one book but I’m also part way through a couple of others. I’ve posted a list of my favourite books of 2017. I’ve also listed ten ‘must read‘ books from last year and also written a post about the next stage of the Self Published Fantasy Blog Off competition. So, not too much on the reading front but I’ve been catching up from a very lazy blogging month during December.
My last book of 2017 and first book of 2018 have worked out really well. John Gwynne’s A Time of Dread was my last book of the year and it was fantastic. My review will follow soon. My first book this year was Tyrell Johnson’s debut The Wolves of Winter. I hope the rest of my reads continue on such a good streak. I’m also currently reading Anthony Ryan’s The Waking Fire as part of the Fantasy Hive’s reading club (check out the books for the rest of the year here), The Chrysalids by John Wyndham (as part of both Vintage Sci Fi and the Sci Fi Experience links to details can be found in this post). These books are going to be chilled reads that I aim to complete by the end of the month.
Books read:
- Wolves of Winter by Tyrell Johnson

Next Week’s Reads:

- The War of Undoing by Alex Perry (my first SPFBO book)
Upcoming reviews:

- A Time of Dread by John Gwynne
- Wolves of Winter by Tyrell Johnson
I’d love to know what you’re reading this week.
Weekly Wrap Up : 17/12/17
This week I’ve not done well in terms of the books I was hoping to read. I have however completed the first stage of the SPFBO and chosen my book to go through to the final stage: Jack Bloodfist: Fixer by James Jakins. Congratulations to James. I had some good contenders this year and have really enjoyed the reads. I’ve been rather busy socially the past week and so whilst I’ve started a couple of books off my intended reading list from last week I’ve not completed any of them. In fact I seem to have been busy doing nothing really.
Anyway, hope you all had a good week.
Next week’s reads:
- The Queen of All Crows by Rod Duncan (about 60% into this one)
- Heartland and Firestorm by Lucy Hounsom
Upcoming reviews:
- A Matter of Blood by Sarah Pinborough
- Starborn by Lucy Hounsom
- The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy #1) by S.A. Chakraborty
- The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
- Envy of Angels by Matt Wallace
Let me know what you’re reading this week.
