‘Thanksgiving themed Freebie’

So, I decided to go for something different this week.  For Thanksgiving, rather than focus on books I figured wouldn’t everybody just love to spend a little time over the holidays watching some awesome films?  Right?  You know you would.  And, I figured as this is also SciFiMonth why not make these all sci fi spectaculars!  It’s almost like I have a plan.  Without further ado:

  1. Star Wars – I love Star Wars – although, I have to be precise – I like the original three films best.  I can’t help it.  There it is – judge away.
  2. Star Trek – I love the most recent films – Star Trek (2009 and Star Trek Into Darkness.
  3. The Terminator – I think you should definitely go for 1 and 2.  I’m hard pressed to say which I like best between the two! Probably 2..
  4. The Martian – great book and very good adaptation.
  5. Interstellar – I thought this was really good. Epic even.
  6. Avatar – after a feast for the belly a feast for the eyes.
  7. Jurassic Park – don’t know if this is sci fi or not – but I do know it’s good.
  8. Aliens.  No explanation needed. Scary!
  9. Back to the Future – you have to love this crazy series and it’s perfect for holiday watching.
  10. Guardians of the Galaxy – I am Groot, and, also, Chris Pratt.

There are loads more out there but I’m sticking with 10.

Don’t quote me, but, I love quotes!!…

‘Top Ten Quotes I Loved From Books I Read In The Past Year Or So’

These quotes are all chosen from books I’ve enjoyed this year:

  1. ‘You can’t trust everything that ass Plato wrote,” Sokrates said.”  The Just City by Jo Walton
  2. ‘Hic sunt leones. Here be lions.’ The Golden Son by Pierce Brown
  3. ‘People do not give it credence that a fourteen-year-old girl could leave home and go off in the wintertime to avenge her father’s blood but it did not seem so strange then, although I will say it did not happen every day.” True Grit by Charles Portis
  4. ‘Oh, for crying out loud,” she said. “Were you fools any more chivalrous I’d surely swoon on the spot and damage my uterus.’ The Mechanical by Ian Tregillis
  5. ‘It’s funny how many ways there are to hurt people. As many ways to hurt as there are species of flower. Whole bouquets of hurt. You do it without even realizing.’ When We Were Animals by Joshua Gaylord
  6. ‘I’m only a little ashamed to say I outsprinted the boy. Old habits die hard. It’s good to be faster than what’s chasing you, but really the important thing in running away is to be faster than the slowest of those being pursued. Rule number one: be ahead of the next man. Or child.’ The Liar’s Key by Mark Lawrence
  7. The palace’s decrepit decorations were overwhelmed by piles of bone and hundreds of skulls staring down from broken chandeliers. Vampires slouched along the walls, drunk with blood, sometimes with red hands resting on humans who still showed signs of life.’ The Greyfriar by Clay and Susan Griffiths
  8. ‘When everyone knows you’re a monster, you needn’t waste time doing every monstrous thing.’ Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
  9. ‘Love as thou wilt’ Kushiel’s Chosen by Jacqueline Carey
  10. ‘So how’d an academic end up walking a zombie through a palace on a heist job?’ The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes

‘Top Ten Book To Movie Adaptations I’m Looking Forward To’

This is a slight cheat because I’m going to list 10 books that I would LOVE to see made into a movie – I know this is a touchy subject for some people and sometimes these films can be just not good.  But, there are some good adaptations out there and I think this list could be excellent with the proper cast and director.  With a bit of luck most of these are already in the pipeline (this would make me very happy):

  1. The Thorns Trilogy – no idea if this is in the offing or not but I would love to see Jorg come to the big screen.  Mark Lawrence’s Prince, King and Emperor of Thorns. Prince, King and Emperor of Thorns.
  2. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman – I’m sure I heard a whisper that this was going to be made into a film.  I so hope it is.  This would be a great movie to watch.
  3. Mayhem and Murder by Sarah Pinborough – scary films!!  These two books would make a perfectly delicious horror/thriller dark gothic Victorian creepy chill inducing pair of movies.  Fingers crossed.
  4. Fifth House of the Heart by Ben Tripp – Oh hell yes!  The casting needs to be good.  Not everyone can play Asmodeus Saxon Tang – but get the casting right and this could be so good.  So very good.
  5. Owl and the Japanese Circus by Kristi Charish – who doesn’t want to watch an action adventure/Indiana Jane?
  6. Hexed by Michael Alan Nelson – I’m going for creepy again.  i can’t help it – this is lovely and dark.
  7. Maybe not a film but a long series – Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel series.  Again – this would all depend on good casting.
  8. All the Truth That’s in me by Julie Berry – a greatly underrated book I feel – really good reading and could make a fantastic movie.
  9. Longbourn by Jo Baker – this could be a fantastic period adaptation.  I loved this book and I could read the whole of Austen’s books retold in the same way.    If you’re listening Jo Baker!
  10. The Girl with All the Gifts by M J Carey – bring on the zombies with a difference!

Which books would you love to see adapted?

“Y’all come back now, ya hear?”

This week over at the Broke and Bookish the topic for Top Ten Tuesday is :

‘Top Ten Debut Authors’

99187-ttt

To be honest I struggled with this a little because I don’t always realise I’m reading a debut.  Here goes (some of these may have 2nd or third books already released but I’ve only read the first):

  1. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams – it was his debut and it’s the only one I’ve read of his!
  2. The Falconer by Elizabeth May
  3. The Martian by Andy Weir
  4. Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho
  5. Updraft by Fran Wild
  6. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke
  7. Scourge of the Betrayer by Jeff Salyards – bit of a cheat as I haven’t read it yet – but I have it lined up!
  8. Darkhaven by A F E Smith
  9. The Grim Company by Luke Scull
  10. Wake by Anna Hope

Hell hath no fury – like a woman!

This week over at the Broke and Bookish the topic for Top Ten Tuesday is :

‘Halloween themed freebie’

99187-ttt

With Halloween in mind I thought I’d put forth 10 wicked female characters for us with one main theme:

  1. The White Witch from CS Lewis’ Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  Let’s face it – she froze Narnia and forbid Christmas!
  2. The Wicked Witch of the West, the Wizard of Oz by Frank Baum – well, she wasn’t very upset when her sister got squashed by a falling house, she was very mean to the straw man and basically a tyrant to the munchkins!  “oh what a world”
  3. The Three Witches from Stardust by Neil Gaiman- you can’t just go around eating pure and innocent fallen stars!
  4. Ursula from the Little Mermaid – a plotter of nefarious deeds!  Stealer of dreams and voices!
  5. Witch of the Waste from Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, robbed Sophie of her youth because she was jealous!
  6. Bellatrix LeStrange from JKRowling’s Harry Potter.  Very powerful, evil and a death eater.  Not to mention killed various characters.
  7. The Grand High Witch from Roald Dahl’s Witches – she has plans – massive plans – to destroy all the children!
  8. The Queen – from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves by the Grimm Brothers.  She may be a queen, and was once the fairest in the land but deep down she’s an evil witch who wants the heart of snow white delivering to her in a box!  tsk
  9. The Witch who cursed the trolls in Danielle Jensen’s Stolen Songbird.  Can’t say too much for fear of spoilers!
  10. Dolores Umbridge from JKRowling’s Harry Potter.  All dressed up in her pink suits looking like butter wouldn’t melt, drinking tea out of her bone china and surrounded by cats – but deep down (in fact not so very deep) she has a horrible mean streak – and don’t be caught talking in class because she’ll give you lines and they won’t be written on paper.

Tis all for me this week.  Except for a little spell from the Sanderson Sisters:

Twist the bones and bend the back

Itch-it-a-cop-it-a Mel-a-ka-mys-ti-ca

Trim him of his baby fat

Itch-it-a-cop-it-a Mel-a-ka-mys-ti-ca

Give him fur black as black

Just…. like…. that!
