1) Moirin and the Circle do one final summoning. What did you think of Folkolor’s choices in who to spare or not? King Daniel also has to make some choices in who to punish or not – do you think he was fair? Is he correct in that he should have given his people something greater to strive for?

To be honest – I suppose they were all in it together weren’t they.  Having said that, I don’t think any of the participants were being particularly malicious, just very ambitious and maybe a bit power crazy which in turn was maybe giving them poor judgement.  The price was high but they should have listened to Moirin – they just thought they knew better.  I don’t really think any of the choices were fair because they were all complicit together, if anything Raphael seems more guilty – but that’s only because we know more about him.  I don’t think the punishment was fair on any of them really – if it was going to be fair they would have all suffered something wouldn’t they?
2) Master Lo is summoned home to Ch’in to do what he can for the Emperor’s daughter Snow Tiger. What do you think of her ailment? What role, if any, do you expect Moirin to play in healing her?
Her ailment seems to be strangely along the same lines of what was taking place with the Circle and I can’t help thinking that Moirin’s gift might come into play.  Exactly how I have no idea whatsoever but I feel sure it must be significant for some reason so maybe this.
3) We learn more about Bao’s past. Do you like him any more or any less now? We also hear some amazing things about Master Lo. Do you think any of them are true?
Bao – I like him, he has a past but then everyone does and that what makes him what he is today?  I don’t dislike him for it.  He’s been very forthright and not tried to hide anything and I appreciate his honesty.  As to Master Lo – it all sounded a little like the Giant Slayer fable!  It could all be perfectly true or it could have been embellished in the way of Chinese Whispers.
4) During the lengthy voyage, Moirin has language lessons, learns a bit about the Ch’in religions, and enjoys Bao’s attentions. What stood out for you?
Well, not to draw attention to it, lol, but I suppose Moirin and Bao actually discovering each other rather stood out for me.  In particular because of the way they started out, the differences in culture – for me, I think you could draw very strong parallels between their relationship and that of Phedre and Joscelin.  And, I really can’t blame Ms Carey for that – it’s a winning combination style after all.
5) They finally make land right into the middle of a civil war. What do you think about Black Sleeve? What do you think his relationship to Master Lo is?
To be honest I really don’t know other than master/pupil gone wrong maybe?

Kushiel’s Avatar by Jacqueline Carey, readalong week No.5

Welcome to week five of our readalong of Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel series.  Kushiel’s Avatar is the third in the series and I am loving it so far.  All free to join in, if you’ve already read this then please join in with the comments.  The full schedule is here and this week I’m hosting.  Before moving on: a word of warning – there will be spoilers lurking below.

So, moving swiftly on:

Chapters 50-61

1. There was so much action this week, let’s just take a minute to discuss that – particularly Phedre’s plan for escape.  I realise this isn’t particularly a question but I just found these chapters so edge of the seat that I think we need to take a moment to discuss them and gather all our thoughts.  What stood out for you?  What surprised you?

These chapters were totally crazy – I was so scared that something was going to go wrong with the whole plan!  It was so gripping though – I literally couldn’t put the book down at this point but just felt like I had to read on.  I was surprised that Phedre was the sacrifice.  I’d had it in my mind that Imriel would be the chosen one and that’s why he was being kept innocent but in actual fact it was a love sacrifice that was required.  I didn’t see that coming.  Those scenes – actually starting from when Phedre and Imriel, with a little help, broke out into the garden – were tense, I was convinced that somebody was going to find them out but that was also a turning point for Phedre and a point when others started to finally look at her in a different light and maybe start to believe that she could make a difference.  Then the scene with the hairpin – I didn’t know if Phedre could do it.  I certainly don’t think I would have shed any tears and yet I like that about her.

2. We’ve already had a debate on Imriel’s abduction and who was responsible and why.  What are your thoughts now on the Gods and their motivations?

I always thought that Imriel’s abduction was too many coincidences rolled up into one to be a random act and in that respect was correct.  But I hadn’t realised that really the Gods had chosen Imriel – not as a punishment but more as the only incentive that would have spurred Phedre into action and actually, ultimately, to prevent a far worse evil occurring.  I think what Phedre, Imriel and Joscelin all went through was terrible but without them it would have been far worse.

3. How do you feel about Imriel and also who do you think is trying to assassinate him?  Also, his reaction to his own family history – do you think that Melisande would ever have stood a chance to bend him to her will or not?

I’m not sure how I feel about Imriel just yet.  In one respect he’s been through a helluva lot and managed to hold it together somehow.  I can’t blame him for wanting to cling to Phedre and Joscelin – it seems he’s not safe anywhere else!  I don’t like his whole spitting thing in fact I find it a bit repulsive but again I’m thinking he’s been through such a lot already – and in fact I think that now it’s clear who he is he will go through so much more.  I’m not sure if Melisande could have bent him to her will – being brought up as he has been he doesn’t really have any closeness to her does he? But then again we’re only seeing him now after all his tribulations which he blames Melisande for.  It will be interesting to see if she can turn him around.

4. Phedre and Joscelin – they’ve been through a lot and ultimately it’s taken a toll.  Do you think this is something that they can get past particularly now that Joscelin has been injured – how do you think he will cope with that?

I feel so bad for Joscelin with his injuries and the way it’s affecting him.  I think it will take some time for him to come round to be honest and if he doesn’t recover it’s going to have a massive impact on his whole being as he lives to serve and protect.  I hope they can both pull through – I think they can but they’ll clearly need time.

5. It looks like Phedre’s cause to help Hyacinthe will be restored.  It looks, at least, like she will have unexpected help along the way. What are your predictions in that respect.

Well, I like to think that Phedre and Joscelin can succeed.  I think that Kaneka joining them will also be really intriguing and I look forward to learning more about her.  She certainly doesn’t mess about.  I loved the way she just jumped into the water to rescue Imriel – such a startling thing to do and not something I saw coming at all.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner, readalong week No.5

This is week 5 of our Maze Runner readalong.  See below for details of schedule and other bloggers taking part.  Only a few more chapters remain now!

Nicole

Do you think Thomas purposefully getting stung by a Griever was a smart idea or stupid?   I don’t know whether I’d call it smart but I guess it was a way to find out what the others went through and maybe get some answers.  It’s curious that Thomas’s experience has been different from the others – I wonder if he is more immune given his other mental abilities and if that is the case it would suggest that maybe he has more a grip of what the real answers are?  He certainly still seems determined to leave the Maze unlike the others who have been through the changing.

Ashlee

Do you think Teresa was the only girl who went through the special training? Or why weren’t more females thrown into the Maze? It’s possible there are more.  I think Thomas and Teresa’s mental abilities obviously single them out in some way.

Sam

In Chapter 44, Teresa suggests that she and Thomas were lovers or knew each other intimately before entering the Glade. Do you think the other boys knew each other before the Glade? Thomas reveals later in the section that they were all orphans raised for this experiment. Did they know each other growing up? Do you think those relationships survived the mind wipe?  I think it’s possible that they all knew each other.  That may be why they go through the Changing they recognise each other?  It’s as though the changing eliminates some of the memory loss somehow – and maybe plants something else instead?  I think it’s possible that Thomas and Teresa were in a relationship, it is possible however that the relationship was brother and sister – which could explain why they have the connection?

Sultana

So there is some big bad disease in the outside world called the Flare that makes Alby so desperate to stay in the Maze he burns the maps and is down to chill out with the uber fun Grievers. How bad could this Flare disease be? Do you think Alby is overreacting, or is there something extra terrible about the Flare? What could it have done to the outside world to be so apocalyptic and awful that Alby wants to stay in the Maze?  The flare definitely sounds like something world changing!  At first I wondered if it was some sort of bio warfare gone horribly wrong?  Or maybe a mass outbreak of some new bug strain.  Perhaps Thomas and Teresa have been through the disease and survived which is why their minds are different?

Katherine

I never thought of any of these characters as particularly smart. Does it strike anyone else as not very believable that these guys are all so super elite that they were co-opted by Science? Particularly Thomas, whose head we’re actually inside and who supposedly designed the maze.  Apart from Thomas and Teresa I’m not sure that any of the others were put into this experiment for their super smarts.  I was sort of thinking they were put there as some form of social experiment just because they were orphans and so nobody to object about how they were being used?  Thomas and Teresa obviously have this mental connection but other than that I wouldn’t say either of them come across as particularly smart at the moment!

Barbara

Why is Newt so negative to Thomas’s code breaking?  There is no better option so why does Newt resist so much?  I think Newt is a much more basic, down to earth, brass tacks type of character who prefers doing something as oppose to thinking about it or trying to come up with a different way of thinking.

Me

I’m curious about the words found in the maps and what they mean? FLOAT CATCH BLEED DEATH STIFF PUSH  I tried thinking of all sorts of different concepts for these – are they anagrams – do you take the first letter of each word and see if that makes an alternative word, etc, etc.  None of these ideas came up with anything else.  The only other thing I could think of is that it refers to the disease (The Flare) – maybe the germs float, you catch the germs, you bleed. you die and go stiff – push?  Don’t know – perhaps you come back as some sort of undead or zombie?

I’ll just have to read on and find out!
