I received two of these recently so thought I’d join in.  The first rule of ‘one lovely blog award’ is that NOBODY talks about one lovely blog award.  That is all. Goodbye.

Okay, maybe not.  The idea is you give a shout out to the blogger who nominated you – so thanks to Leona at Leona’s Blog of Shadows and also Lucia at Making Days Better.  You also list the rules – so ‘ere they be and be making sure you stick to ’em:

The Rules:

  • You must thank the person who nominated you and include a link to their blog.
  • You must list the rules and display the award.
  • You must add 7 facts about yourself.
  • You must nominate 15 other bloggers and comment on one of their posts to let them know they have been nominated.

To the facts:

  1. I love sleep.  I think I could happily slob around in bed all day – in fact, when I was a baby my mum had to wake me up to feed me.  Yes, that’s right.  Now all you people out there with little babies – think about that for just one moment!
  2. I have a book boyfriend – strictly speaking this isn’t a secret as I use every opportunity available to talk about him – Jean Tannen is his name and I will forever love (not in a bunny-boiler-stalker-way) Scott Lynch for creating him!
  3. I eat far too quickly – I basically hate to eat food that has gone cold.  I like eating cold food.  I just don’t enjoy eating food that was supposed to be warm but is now cold.  So, if I go out for a meal with somebody, they turn around momentarily, distracted, or start using the condiments and when they look up my plate is probably empty – okay, I exaggerate, but only slightly. Anyway, this means I can talk while they eat!  It’s almost like I have a plan.
  4. I enjoy cooking.  I’m not saying I’m good at it, but there’s something definitely restful about preparing a meal and (hopefully) others enjoying it.  Plus, even though I wolf my food down – sitting around enjoying a meal with your family and friends is something to enjoy.
  5. I love to go to events where my favourite authors are present – but, I turn into a nervous wreck and can’t say anything to them.  This is a great source of amusement to my buddy Jenny who suffers no such anxiety about talking to authors – or publishers for that matter – because I also can’t speak to publishers.  In fact I usually try to skulk around at the back of the room just to avoid notice.  Which is so unlike me – I’m really not a shy person.
  6. A little ghosty-type story. When I was younger, about 20, I woke up one morning and was convinced somebody was in the bedroom with me.  I was so terrified that I literally couldn’t move as I didn’t want to alert whoever it was to the fact that I was awake.  So, I was lying, face down in bed (in fact I was probably stuck to the pillow) when suddenly something sat on my back and giggled.  Yep, scared me to death.  Then it was all gone, the weight was lifted and I literally dived out of bed and got out of the house sharpish.  Now obviously, as the years have passed I’ve convinced myself that I was in that strange moment between sleep and waking – but who knows?  Do you have any creepy tales.  One thing for absolute sure – maybe I was dreaming, but even so I ran out of that house!
  7.  My favourite time of the year is autumn/winter.  I think it’s because I’m a winter baby.  I like the dark nights, the colour of the leaves, in fact the atmosphere even seems to smell different to me – I know that’s an odd thing to say but I can’t describe it any other way.  I’m just comfortable at this time of year.

So, In terms of nominees – well, I like to break the rules so I’m not picking 15, I figure I’ll pick as many sites as I have written  facts above.  Here are my magnificent seven and they’re nearly all fairly new(ish) to me bloggers who I want to find out some more about (because No. 8 – I’m nosey) – no pressure at all to take part – we’re all busy and these things are very time consuming:

  1. DJ at My Life My Books My Escape
  2. Books by Proxy
  3. Maddalena at Space and Sorcery
  4. Steph from at Bookishswint
  5. Carmen from Carmen’s Books and Movie Reviews
  6. Jenclair from Bayouquilts – this isn’t a new blog to me but it is so lovely that I wanted to include it
  7. SCFlynn – because, SC Flynn has interviewed millions of bloggers and authors and all sorts of other people!  Check out the site – I thought maybe this could be like, well, no, not an interview, but come on – 7 facts!  Enquiring minds need to know.

That is all for me.  If you want to play along and you’re not on the list then do so.  If you’re on the list and don’t want to play along – don’t.  Simples 😀

If you do take part feel free to share the link as I’d like to stop by. 😀

Today is day 23 of Drawlloween – a fun event that I found out about here on the lovely ‘Not Yet Read’.  Today is Gore. This was also a tough one for me – happily, I think some of the next ones might be a little easier – but we’ll see.  Yeah, check my ‘Gore’ entry out at your own peril!  You were warned.  A large mess of gore (or strawberry shoelaces??):

‘Ooh-de-la-lay! Ooh-de-la-lay! Fortune tellers!’

This week, over at the Fantasy Review Barn, Nathan is taking us travelling once again through the tropes of fantasy.  This week the topic for discussion is:

THE GOOD THIEF

Sure they may pocket things that don’t belong to them.  And yes, anything that can be wiggled loose isn’t really locked down and may be fair game to them.  And if they put half of their intelligence into legit trades instead of long cons they would probably be pillars of fantasyland’s community.  But damn it, some thieves are still good people.

  1. The Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch.  Yep the GBs had to make the list.  First and foremost.
  2. Six of Crows – another heist story by Leigh Bardugo with a very clever gang of characters
  3. The Palace Job by Patrick Weeks – just finished this one and it was highly entertaining – and, another heist job
  4. Owl and the Japanese Circus by Kristi Charish – Owl is a thief of antiquities – an Indiana Jones
  5. The Thief Who pulled on Trouble’s Braids by Michael McClung – another recent read as part of my SPFBO – the clue is in the title
  6. Time Salvager by Wesley Chu – yes, you can call this a time salvager or somebody who goes back in the past to recover resources – but, basically it is stealing from the past.  Yes?
  7. Fifth House of the Heart by Ben Tripp – mm, Saxon Tang may deal in antiquities, he may be successful and filthy rich – but he was involved in some dodgy deals in his bygone years!
  8. Drothe – Among thieves by Douglas Hulick.  Clue in the title.

Finally – you decide one of these – or maybe both – is a thief??

Just finished reading The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes which was a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy adventure/heist story packed with unusual characters and lots of fun.

The story starts off with a crazy inventive prison break.  Loch and her fellow prisoner Kali have to get out of the Cleaners before something seriously ‘bad’ happens.  And, basically they take their chances and go for it.  That right there – that should give you a damn good idea what the rest of the story will be like – anyway, you can definitely over think a plan.

Loch has a curious background – quite unexpected in fact when the full story eventually comes out.  She’s an ex-soldier and was in prison for deserting – along with her colleague and friend Kali.  Of course, it turns out that this could have been a set up because whilst she’s been away from home it seems like her future and inheritance has been stolen.   Now, Loch is determined to steal from the man who stole from her.  She has her sights set on an ancient elven manuscript and needs to put together the best crew possible to pull off the impossible.

Let me recount the ways in which this is good.

Firstly, and I like to think rather importantly a great cast of characters.   I mean, there is a lot going on here and plenty of people to populate the story so the character development isn’t maybe as deep as you could hope for but I still thought Weekes did a good job.  Let’s put it this way, I liked them.  More to the point, as things rolled forward and the proverbial started to hit the fan I was worried about them.  We have Loch – can this woman fight or what!  Why yes she can.  Her trusty sidekick Kali who trusts her completely.  Kali is your typical joker and seems to be able to crack ‘mother’ jokes in multiple languages.  We have a unicorn, nope, not kidding – oh, and this unicorn can shape shift.  A young male who seems the most unlikely recruit and his would-be friend the wizard, a skilled lock picker and an acrobat and last, but not least a death priestess and her talking warhammer.  Yep, wow.  I love this cast.  Like I said, the development could have probably used a bit more time but having said that it would have made the story a heck of a lot longer and would also probably have diluted the dialogue and humour to an extent.

Secondly, I think the pacing and plot is excellent.  It’s a very clever story and clearly being a little less clever I was delightfully surprised for the majority of the book – I am just basically useless at second guessing and to be honest I tend to think why even try – just get on with the story, become immersed and everything will eventually become clear.  On top of which, reading this with a sense of wonder and surprise all adds to the tension you feel for the characters.  The plot – well, what I can say is that Weekes puts you through the wringer a little bit in terms of the characters – to such an extent that certain elements of the plot definitely take a back seat because you’re so desperate to read on and find out what happens next.

Thirdly, Great imagination. The world.  Well, again, probably could have used a little development but on the whole we have such a lot going on.  Mummies, satyrs, prophecies, steam punk elements, elves.  Basically, you name it and Weekes has probably thought it!

I’m actually not going to give a lot more away.  A quick recap.  A strange yet great bunch of characters – oh, I forgot about Pyvic – this is the guy who is hot on the tail of the escaped prisoners – and another really good character to read about.  Anyway, as I was saying.  This is very entertaining.  I think it will give you a whole bundle of laughs.  It’s clever, quick and imaginative.  I found myself almost desperately wondering how on earth the characters could survive.

I can’t wait to pick up the next in series.

I received a copy of this courtesy of the publishers through Netgalley for which my thanks.  The above is my own opinion.
