Weekly Wrap Up : 24/2/19
What an amazing week with lots of lovely weather – quite unknown in the UK for this month of the year – all the little green buds are peaking up hopefully through the soil! Fingers crossed that this mild weather continues and all these new green shoots don’t get blitzed with frost. Reading wise I’ve read three books this week. I’ve gone a little off plan though. I read The Anointed and also Never Contented Things. I did read some of The Orphanage of Gods but I’ve had to put that down for the moment. I think it’s a case of ‘it’s me not you’ but my mood just isn’t in the right place so I’m going to give us both a bit of space.
My books:
- Never-Contented Things by Sarah Porter
- The Anointed by Keith Ward (one of the SPFBO finalists)
- Bound by Mark Lawrence
Next week’s reads:
- Symphony of the Wind by Steven McKinnon (one of the SPFBO finalists)
- The Kingdom of Copper by S. A. Chakraborty
- The True Queen by Zen Cho
Currently reading:
- Symphony of the Wind by Steven McKinnon
Upcoming reviews:
- Never-Contented Things by Sarah Porter
- The Anointed by Keith Ward (one of the SPFBO finalists)
- Bound by Mark Lawrence
I’d love to know what you’re reading this week.
Friday Face Off : “the worst is death and death will have his day.”

Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme created by Books by Proxy . This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers. The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme (list below) choose a book, compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite. Future week’s themes are listed below – the list has been updated to help out those of you who like to plan ahead – if you have a cover in mind that you’re really wanting to share then feel free to leave a comment about a future suggested theme. This week’s theme:
“Woe, destruction, ruin, and decay; the worst is death and death will have his day.” – A cover with abandoned building/s
Well, I struggled with this theme I can’t deny it. I could have used a book that I’ve already used but I didn’t want to do so and so after much, much trawling through books I came up with the third book in the Forest of Hands and Teeth – The Dark and Hollow Places – which I think fits the theme.
The covers:
My favourite this week is:

I quite like the cover with the ruined city too.
Like last week I’ve added a Mr Linky here so that you can leave a link if you wish or please leave me a link in the comments so I can visit and check out your covers. Thanks
I’ll be updating the list soon to take it through a few more months – if you have any suggestions you’d like to see adding then drop a note in the comments. Thanks
Next week – A cover featuring a shop or market

Throwback Thursday, is a new feature created by Tenacious Reader with the aim of highlighting books from the past. This can be virtually anything, a book from your past that you loved, a book that you want to highlight again, maybe it’s a book in a series and the next book is due out shortly so you want to focus some attention on the series. Anything goes – so long as your book isn’t a current release as there are already plenty of ways to highlight the latest books.
The book I’d like to highlight this week is : Jamaica Inn by Daphne DuMaurier
Perhaps not as well known as DuMaurier’s Rebecca but an excellent read with a very dark secret at its heart. I loved this book when I originally read it – in fact after reading Rebecca I had something of a binge read of many of her books. This was pre blog and so I have no review – perhaps I should have a reread! I love DuMaurier’s writing style and the fact that she uses the Cornish coastline as inspiration for many of her novels. She’s a wonderful storyteller and I heartily recommend this book.
The coachman tried to warn her away from the ruined, forbidding place on the rainswept Cornish coast. But young Mary Yellan chose instead to honor her mother’s dying request that she join her frightened Aunt Patience and huge, hulking Uncle Joss Merlyn at Jamaica Inn. From her first glimpse on that raw November eve, she could sense the inn’s dark power. But never did Mary dream that she would become hopelessly ensnared in the vile, villainous schemes being hatched within its crumbling walls — or that a handsome, mysterious stranger would so incite her passions … tempting her to love a man whom she dares not trust.

“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme that was originally created by Breaking the Spine. Unfortunately Breaking the Spine are no longer hosting so I’m now linking my posts up to Wishful Endings Can’t Wait Wednesday. Don’t forget to stop over, link up and check out what books everyone else is waiting for. If you want to take part, basically, every Wednesday, we highlight a book that we’re really looking forward to. This week my book is : Council (Helga Finnsdottir #2) by Snorri Kristjansson. This is the second book in the series, I really enjoyed the first book, Kin and my review is here. Vikings and murder mystery – sign me up for that please
After five years on the road, Helga has finally settled near King Eirik’s court in Uppsala, where she’s well-regarded as a healer. She’s even in a relationship, of sorts.
But life is about to get a bit more exciting, for King Eirik has summoned all those who owe him fealty to the King’s Council and tempers are already flaring. The body of an unknown boy is found near the river, but with delegations from all over the country arriving and rumours of an imminent attack, there are more important things to attend to than the death of a nobody . . .
Only Helga suspects murder, until a second body makes it clear that someone is intent on breaking up the King’s Council – and that a traitor walks among them . .
Publication: May 2019
I have so many mixed feelings with White Stag that it’s really difficult to know where to begin. My head is totally mashed up and so I’m going to go with a slightly different style of review this time, Firstly, I’m not going to outline the plot. The synopsis on Goodreads is perfectly good enough in that respect and because I don’t want to cause you any discomfort jumping around I’ve copied it belownfor your ease of reference (you’re welcome). 😀
