Top Ten Tuesday
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme where every Tuesday we look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) bookish examples to demonstrate that particular topic. Top Ten Tuesday (created and hosted by The Broke and Bookish) is now being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and future week’s topics can be found here. This week’s topic is :
Series I Did Not Finish
I’ve changed this slightly to series that I seem to be struggling/reluctant to finish. These are series where I started off by loving the first book, or more, but then for reasons unknown just lost the impetus to continue and it’s now been so long that I’m unlikely to return to them:
- Divergent by Veronica Roth – only read the first book. I enjoyed it but the impetus to continue fizzled out for me.
- The Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger – I read the first four books but never completed the series – which is a shame.
- The Sci fi books by Hugh Howey – read Wool and Shift.
- Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. Only read the first. Everyone seemed to love this series and I enjoyed the first book but I recognise that I probably won’t complete it now.
- Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare – I confess that I went off these a little.
- A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, I read the first two books. The first was okay but I did have a couple of issues. The second didn’t really work out for me although it’s a series that has plenty of love.
- The Alchemist of Souls by Anne Lyle – I enjoyed the first one and do have the next two books. Part of me would like to have the chance to get to them but at the same time I recognise I’m probably just being hopelessly optimistic.
- Ashes and Shadows by Ilsa Bick – I still need to read Monsters but I think unfavourable reviews at the time slowed me down and it’s so long ago since I read these now that I’d probably need a reread.
- The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N K Jemisin – another book that has heaps of praise and that I enjoyed and yet here I am no further along. It’s all about the time I suppose.
- Left blank for your unfinished series ???
You can run but you can’t hide!

This week over at the Broke and Bookish the Top Ten Tuesday is:
Ten Finished Series I Have YET to Finish
Yes, this week’s topic is finished series – that I haven’t yet finished reading!! I wrote this (shamefaced) post some time ago and I have been trying to cross some books off the list – unfortunately at the same time I’ve been crossing off I’ve also been adding more. However, as I haven’t put the new series on the list yet I refuse to feel guilty about them. Without further ado my 10 unfinished series:
- Timeless by Gail Carriger – already read Soulless, Changeless, Blameless and Heartless
- The Descent by Alma Katus – already read The Taker and The Reckoning
- Dust by Hugh Howey – already read Wool and Shift
- The Merchant of Dreams and The Prince of Lies by Anne Lyle – already read The Alchemist of Souls
- Monsters by Ilsa Bick – already read Ashes and Shadows
- Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore – read Graceline and Fire (not altogether a series but based in the same world – and have now started reading this one!)
- The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness – already read A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night (in truth I’ve actually gone off this series a little)
- The Last Rite by Jasper Kent (No 5 in the Danilov Quintet) – already read Twelve, Thirteen Years Later, The Third Section and The People’s Will – I really need to finish this one.
- Outpost and Horde by Ann Aguirre – already read Enclave
- Shimmer and Burn by Paula Weston – already read Shadows and Haze
The. Most. Shamefaced. Post. Ever!
I’ve been thinking about my unfinished series recently and reading other people’s blogs it seems that I’m not alone in accruing unfinished books in series. Why? Why do I keep moving onto the next series before I’ve finished all the others – I even have the last book, and in some cases I was probably foaming at the mouth waiting for that final book’s release date. So, any ideas about why this happens. I’m clueless. However, I do have an idea of how big a problem it is for me – and that’s why I said this was a shamefaced post! Okay, I’ve split these into – (1) books that haven’t even made the list because I just wasn’t enamoured enough to ever continue (In other words I’m not even adding those in here). (2) books that I was enjoying enough at the time but I’ve left it so long that I’ll probably never regain the enthusiasm to pick up. (3) books that I really enjoyed and do intend to complete the series, some day! (4) books that are still ongoing because the end of the series hasn’t been reached yet (therefore I am totally blameless under those circumstances):
(2) Books I enjoyed but in fairness probably won’t complete
- Unearthly by Cynthia Hand – I did like this but it’s been so long!
- Divergent by Veronica Roth – ditto the above
- Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night by Deborah Harkness- went off this series a little
- Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl – went off this series a little
- White Cat by Holly Black – enjoyed this, maybe I will complete
- Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare – went off this series a little
(3) Books I enjoyed and DO intend to complete (Number in brackets denotes how many yet to read in series)
- Soulless, Changeless, Blameless and Heartless by Gail Carriger just need to read Timeless (1)
Fury, Envy by Elizabeth Miles – Eternity left to read (1)- Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch – need to read Moon Over Soho and Whispers Underground (2)
- The Taker, The Reckoning by Alma Katsu – the Descent to complete the series (1)
- Wool and Shift by Hugh Howey – need to read Dust (1)
- Between Two Thorns by Emma Newman – Any Other Name and All is Fair (2)
- Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb – Royal Assassin and Assassin’s Quest (2)
- Enclave by Ann Aguirre – Outpost and Horde (2)
- The Alchemist of Souls by Anne Lyle – The Merchant of Dreams and The Prince of Lies (2)
- The Sandman Series by Neil Gaiman (Read up to No.5 – you can’t rush these things!)
- Boneshaker by Cherie Priest – Dreadnought, Ganymede, The Inexplicables, Fiddlehead (4)
- Ashes and Shadows by Ilsa Bick need to read Monsters (1)
- Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore – Bitter Blue (1) (strictly speaking not a series but set in the same world)
- Pure by Julianna Baggott – need to read Fuse and Burn (2)
- The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N K Jemisin – The Broken Kingdoms and Kingdom of the Gods (2)
Morganville Vampires by Rachel CaineCOMPLETE
(4) Books that I can’t finish yet because they’re ongoing still or maybe haven’t been written yet – I’ve put the first in the series although I’ve pretty much read up to date!
- Among Thieves by Douglas Hulick
- Shadows/Haze by Paul Weston
- Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
- Patricia Briggs – (Mercy Thompson – ongoing series)
- Kevin Hearne (Iron Druid Chronicles – ongoing series)
- Jim Butcher (Dresden Files – ongoing series)
- Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
- Immortal Beloved by Cate Tiernan
- Fated etc by Benedict Jacka (ongoing series)
Firebrand by Gillian Philip (Rebel Angel series)- The Hammer and the Blade by Paul Kemp
- A History of Dragons by Marie Brennan
- Twelve by Jasper Kent
- The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
- Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
- Dragon’s Path by Daniel Abraham
- Seven Forges by James A Moore
- The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
- Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Mayhem by Sarah Pinborough- The Legend of Ellie Quinn by Alex Scarrow
- Black Dog by Rachel Neiumeier
- Tarnished by Karina Cooper
- the Black Fire Concerto by Mike Allen
Three by Jay Posey- Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff
- The Grim Company by Luke Scull
I’m sure I’ve probably missed a few – if you spot any – please don’t tell me as I’m now going into mild trauma! This year’s resolution was to make a dent in this list! (It’s not as bad as it at first looks though- ignoring (2), (3) = 24, (4) – impossible to say but maybe 20 something (some not yet written after all) – so IT. CAN. BE. DONE! (Shhh, this doesn’t include the series that I’m just about to start!)
