Top Ten Tuesday: Books On My Winter 2025-2026 to-Read List

TTT

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme where every Tuesday we look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) bookish examples to demonstrate that particular topic.  Top Ten Tuesday (created and hosted by  The Broke and Bookish) is now being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and future week’s topics can be found here.  This week’s prompt is:

Monthly Wrap Up/What’s On My Plate: October/November/December

I’m trying to post a wrap up for the end of each month, mainly to help me to keep track of my reading and at the same time look at what I’m intending to read during the month ahead (inspired by Books Bones and Buffy’s What’s on My Plate.

I’ve missed one of my monthly wrap up posts so I’m going to try and give a quick update for October and November and what I’m planning to read in December.

My Monthly Wrap Up: October

The following is the list of books I posted in September that I was hoping to complete in October.  Lets take a look:

  1. Cinder House by Freya Marske
  2. Alchemy of Secrets by Stephanie Garber
  3. The Cold House by A.G. Slatter
  4. House of Splinters by Laura Purcell
  5. Ring the Bells by CK McDonnell
  6. The Last Witch by C.J. Cooke
  7. The Possession of Alba Dias by Isabel Cañas
  8. Murder Most Haunted by Emma Mason
  9. King Sorrow by Joe Hill
  10. The Last Death of the Year by Sophie Hannah
  11. The Everlasting by Alix E Harrow

I’ve linked the books with reviews.  The Possession of Alba Dias I set aside because it was a period when my reading mood wasn’t good and so I shall be going back and picking that one up.  Murder Most Haunted I also made a start with – I’m not totally sure this one is going to work for me but I’d like to give it another shot.  The Last Death of the Year I’ve not picked up yet but I am excited to do so.

My Monthly Wrap Up: November

The following is the list of books I was hoping to complete in November.  Lets take a look:

  1. The Blackfire Blade by James Logan
  2. The Place Where They Buried Your Heart by Christina Henry
  3. I’ll Make A Spectacle of You by Beatrice Winifred Iker
  4. Outlaw Planet by MR Carey

I have read The Place Where They Buried Your Heart – which I loved and already reviewed.  I’m currently reading The Blackfire Blade and Outlaw Planet is my next planned read.  It doesn’t look as though I read many books in November but I think some of my October reads were actually read in November but because I wasn’t posting weekly wraps it’s difficult to place everything!  This is why I need to be more organised.  Anyway.  It is what it is.

What’s On My Plate: December:

I’m hoping to catch up with review books that I’ve carried forward from October and also complete my last books from November (plus a late addition that went onto my September shelf:

  1. What Stalks the Deep by T Kingfisher
  2. The Possession of Alba Dias by Isabel Cañas (Carried over from October)
  3. Murder Most Haunted by Emma Mason (Carried over from October)
  4. The Last Death of the Year by Sophie Hannah (Carried over from October)
  5. The Blackfire Blade by James Logan
  6. I’ll Make A Spectacle of You by Beatrice Winifred Iker
  7. Outlaw Planet by MR Carey

If possible I’d love to complete these by the end of December but I recognise that I’m not reading quite as much at the moment as there are too many other distractions at the moment.  We’ll see.  Maybe I’ll have a strange burst of reading.  Never say never.

I’ve been terrible with this challenge this year – I think I’ll just declare this year a failure and start again next year with a proper list to try and get myself into gear.

PICTURE PROMPT BOOK BINGO 2025 (TEXT VERSION)

1. A prehistoric flint knapped stone knife 2. A lighthouse 3. An apple on a leafy branch 4. An archery target with three arrows in it
5. A very large mechanical telescope 6. A human skull 7. A stag 8. The ruins of a temple-like structure
9. A crab 10. A sheaf of wheat 11. An old mechanical typewriter 12. A cluster of four mushrooms
13. A fringed umbrella / parasol 14. A chemistry set-up of bottles and tubes 15. A stylized sun with a human face 16. A Roman helmet

Today, I’m ticking off: No. 7 A Stag – which I’m using Clockwork Boys by T Kingfisher for (you’ll know why if you’ve read it).  I’ve also gone back through my list and I’m using The Vipers by Katy Hays for No.15 – A stylized sun with a human face – because the setting is the beautiful and dazzling island of Capri and the season is Summer – so plenty of sunshine and sparkling seas.  For No.4 – the Archery Target with Arrows in it – I’ve chosen the Bone Raiders by Jackson Ford because one of the female raiders is an expert shot with bow and arrow.

So, three more prompts left – not sure I’m going to make it this year, these last three are tricksy, a flint knife, a lighthouse and a telescope.  I might have to do some creative thinking.

The prompts I’ve crossed off so far:

No. 16 – A Roman helmet – and I’m using This Monster of Mine by Shalini Abeysekara.

No. 3 – an apple on a leafy branch – Hemlock and Silver by T Kingfisther

No.10 – A Sheaf of Wheat – The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst –

No. 11 – An Old Mechanical Typewriter – The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno Garcia

No.8 – The ruins of a temple-like structure – I’m using Daughter of Chaos by A S Webb

No. 12 – A cluster of four mushrooms – I’m using Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales by Heather Fawcett

No. 13 – A fringed umbrella/parasol – I’m using A Fortune Most Fatal by Jessica Bull

No.14 – A chemistry set-up of bottles and tubes – I’m using Wooing the Witch Queen by Stephanie Burgis

No.9 – A Crab – I’m using The Devils by Joe Abercrombie – if you’ve read this already you’ll be able to guess why.  There are some very unusual creatures in this story.

No.6 – A Human Skull – I’m using The Man Made of Smoke by Alex North – because this is about a serial killer and there are definite human remains included in this one.

Number of books read this year: 78 (well below target – boo!)

Booking Ahead/Weekly Wrap Up

Sunday Post

Books read this week:

It’s been quiet on the blog and I’ve missed one of my weekly wrap ups so today will be a double.  Basically, I’ve had hip replacement surgery and so have been a little out of action. I think everything is going well though and I’ve certainly been doing lots of reading so let’s take a look at the books I’ve picked up recently.

I completed and really enjoyed The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig – the audio book was very good.  I also finished and, again, really enjoyed It Was Her House First by Cherie Priest.  I read My Ex, the AntiChrist by Craig DiLouie which was another very good read that I enjoyed the style of storytelling and I completed Another Fine Mess by Lindy Ryan.  I picked up and read about 50% of The Library at Hellebore by Cassandra Khaw – this one didn’t work for me and I’ve decided it’s a DNF.  I really wanted to complete it but seriously I can’t.  It’s just not my style.  Finally I’ve managed to complete Fateless by Julie Kagawa – action packed and enjoyable if a little generic.  This means I’ve completed my July reads and can move onto August review titles.  Woot. (Although I need to press on with reviews now to catch up).

Next Week’s Reads:

I think I’ll pick up The Bone Raiders by Jackson Ford and I also have the audio version of The Dead Husband Cookbook by Danielle Valentine.

Monthly/Weekly Wrap Up/What’s On My Plate June/July

I’m trying to post a wrap up for the end of each month, mainly to help me to keep track of my reading and at the same time look at what I’m intending to read during the month ahead (inspired by Books Bones and Buffy’s What’s on My Plate.

This month’s wrap up post will be a bit messy again like last month’s because I’m combining it with my weekly wrap up.

Weekly Update

The weather has been glorious and with the summer comes more socialising.  That being said my weekly reading the past week has been good.  I did indeed finish A Far Better Thing by HG Parry and not only loved it but have already posted my review – a Dickens inspired world with wicked fae.  I then picked up Paved With Good Intentions by Peter McLean which I also absolutely loved.  I also finished listening to Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry.  I struggled with this one for at least two thirds of the read but I confess the final chapters definitely piqued my interest and the ending in particular.  I then picked up and practically inhaled The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.  A bewitching tale, a mystery and witches that feel almost akin to vampires.

Next Week’s reads

I’m happy to say that I’ve also started two new books, both of which I’m enjoying very much so far.  The Enchanted Greenhouse which I’m about a third into and The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig which is my current audio book.

My Monthly Wrap Up:

Books read in June:

  1. The Countdown Killer by Sam Holland
  2. The Rush by Beth Lewis
  3. The Bodies by Sam Lloyd
  4. Swordheart by T Kingfisher
  5. A Far Better Thing by HG Parry
  6. Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry

I’ve had a slow reading month for sure and looking back at my last monthly review I had 11 books queued up to read – The Listeners by Maggie Stiefvater was unfortunately a DNF.  I also picked up and started With A Vengeance by Riley Sager but it wasn’t working it’s magic – which was a surprise as I’ve been really enjoying this author’s work recently.  From the rest of the list I’d already picked up and reviewed We Live Here Now by Sarah Pinborough which was great, the Shield and the Moth by Rachel Gillig I’m now listening to and Paved with Good Intentions by Peter McLean is now complete (I just didn’t manage to fit it into June).

Here’s what I’m hoping to read in July, in fact I’ve already made good progress as I’ve read The Bewitching and started The Enchanted Greenhouse.  I’ve carried over The Knight and the Moth and I’m going to try and squeeze in a couple of backlist books if I can:

  1. Fateless by Julie Kagawa
  2. The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst – current read
  3. The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia  – read and waiting to be reviewed
  4. Another Fine Mess by Lindy Ryan
  5. It Was Her First House by Cherie Priest
  6. The Library at Hellebore by Cassandra Khaw

This month I’m hoping to go back to a couple of books from last October that I really wanted to read but didn’t have the time to fit them in.  Let’s see how that goes.

Today, I’m ticking off another of the prompts.  No. 11 – the old mechanical typewriter – I’m using The Bewitching for this one as one of the characters is a writer and is actually gifted a typewriter in the story.  The book she writes features prominently in the story so I think it’s a good fit.

The prompts I’ve crossed off so far:

No.8 – The ruins of a temple-like structure – I’m using Daughter of Chaos by A S Webb

Monthly Wrap Up/What’s On My Plate December/January

I’m trying to post a wrap up for the end of each month, mainly to help me to keep track of my reading and at the same time look at what I’m intending to read during the month ahead (inspired by Books Bones and Buffy’s What’s on My Plate.

In this post I shall be looking at the reading I completed during December and also setting out what I’m hoping to achieve during the first month of 2025.   I haven’t managed to complete all my review books but I’ve fit some in and overall, for the entire year, I think I’m approximately 9 or 10 books outstanding – which, I’m not too displeased with – although I was set to keep on track until the last two months, but, the best laid plans, etc.  Anyway, I’ve completed my Countdown posts (the last two posts already scheduled) and in the new year, as well as continuing with the Backlist challenge, I shall be starting to read the 9 SPFBO finalists (check them all out here).

Here’s what I read during December :

  1. The Scholar and the Last Faerie Door by HG Parry
  2. Strange Beasts by Susan J Morris
  3. The Last One at the Wedding by Jason Rekulak
  4. The Queen by Nick Cutter – review to follow soon
  5. The Coven by Harper L Woods – I’m still reading this but hopefully will complete by New Year.

Here’s what I’m hoping to read in January:

  1. The House of Frost and Feathers by Lauren Wiesebron
  2. Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix
  3. Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney
  4. Daughter of Chaos by A S Webb

I’m also hoping to make a start on my SPFBO Finalists.  You can find them all here.

Plus I still have two books sent to me by authors that I’d also like to pick up:

Land from Bjørn Larssen; and

Drown Deep by Phil Williams

This month I yet again have read no Backlist Books but I’ve managed to read six books from my backlist this year – not as good as I’d hoped but it’s still an improvement and means I’m slowly catching up.

This month I’m ticking off the final two prompts.  The microscope – I’m using The Last Hour Between Worlds by Melissa Caruso for this one as it has a groundhog feel to the story that makes you feel like each world is really under scrutiny.  For the bees I’m using The Queen by Nick Cutter – if you’ve read this you’ll know why.   Thank you so much to the Bookforager for running this fun picture prompt.
