Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme created by Books by Proxy . This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers. The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme (list below) choose a book (this doesn’t have to be a book that you’ve read), compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite. Future week’s themes are listed below – if you have a cover in mind that you’re really wanting to share then feel free to leave a comment about a future suggested theme. I’ve also listed events that take place during the year, that I’m aware of, so you can link up your covers – if you’re aware of any events that you think I should include then give me a shout. This week’s theme:
Romantic – “thus with a kiss I die”
A lot of the new themes are open to interpretation which might make choosing the covers and seeing other’s choices very interesting. I can’t stress enough that this is all about your own interpretation and hopefully this new open feel to the meme will bring a larger selection of books and covers. It’s not supposed to be hard work, there are no rules, just enjoy yourself.
Well, I thought this was going to be easy – but it wasn’t. Drat. Anyway, I’ve gone for an old love story and a fairytale retelling of Beauty and the Beast. This week my book is
The Beast’s Heart by Leife Shallcross and here are the covers – looking at these now I was hopeful that one of the roses would be heart shaped, alas, they are not – but red roses for Valentine’s Day – it works doesn’t it? Again, as I’m using a fairly recent read there aren’t lots of covers again this week:

I’m not entirely sure what I had in mind for this week’s themes but as it happens I had a few more possibilities for this than I first suspected would be the case. I’ve gone for another fairly recent read which only has a couple of covers. A Brightness Long Ago by Guy Gavriel Kay. This was the first book I’ve read by this author and I really enjoyed it. Here are the covers:

This week I did struggle a little. I thought of a book I’d love to use but there were no alternative covers and then the books I had in mind I’ve used previously. Anyway, I eventually came up with The Bone Season (The Bone Season #1) by Samantha Shannon. I enjoyed this series where I read up to but I’m not sure if I just got left behind or the series came to a standstill – investigation is needed methinks. Anyway here are the covers:
Difficult to choose a cover this week – nothing jumps out at me particularly although I do like the fresh colours in this one:

I thought of lots of books for this week’s theme but being Vintage sci fi month I’ve gone for a slightly different take on the theme and a book I read as part of the event a few years ago. The Stainless Steel Rat (Stainless Steel Rat (Publication Order) #1) by Harry Harrison. I chose this for the name but as it happens one of the covers has a rat. Here are this week’s covers:

Hopefully horizon is a nice easy theme for everyone. I’m trying to stick to my idea of showcasing some newer books wherever possible so this week I’ve gone for a book I’ve not yet read – although I’ve just picked up the audio version and plan to start it next week. My book this week is Starsight (Skyward #2) by Brandon Sanderson – both this and the first cover have a version that has a lot of action taking place on the horizon. Here are the covers this week:
Not a lot of covers this week as this is a very new book. That middle cover is a bit unusual isn’t it – on first glance it reminded me of a lego figure (a zombie lego figure)!
I really like the first cover which by happy coincidence fits the horizon theme perfectly – just check out everything that’s going on:
