Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme created by Books by Proxy . This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers. The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme (list below) choose a book (this doesn’t have to be a book that you’ve read), compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite. Future week’s themes are listed below – if you have a cover in mind that you’re really wanting to share then feel free to leave a comment about a future suggested theme. I’ve also listed events that take place during the year, that I’m aware of, so you can link up your covers – if you’re aware of any events that you think I should include then give me a shout. This week’s theme:
Modern sci fi
This is another one of the themes I came up with to coincide with the sci fi event taking place during November so hope you’ve all come up with something good. This week I thought I’d go with a classic science fiction (well, what I would call modern classic anyways) with the aim of comparing the original cover against a more modern one:
So, firstly, the original cover:

vs, the most recent cover (I could find):

It’s difficult to choose really because I want to choose the original – but I think I have to go with the more vibrant red cover which is very eye catching.
Do you have a favourite?
I’ll be updating the list in order to include forthcoming events that I’m aware of so that you can perhaps link your themes up where possible (if you know of an event you’d like to share then let me know in the comments). As always, if you wish to submit an idea then leave me a comment – or if you’d like to host a week then simply let me know.
Next week – Modern sci fi
I have completed a new list for 2021 – I’m just putting it into order and it will be included next week.
2020
4th December – Fae – or fairy??
11th December – Lake – the mysterious lake
18th December – Highly Stylised
25th December- Freebie – or day off.
“Fifteen years was a long time to be stranded anywhere, particularly somewhere as mind-boggingly dull as Earth.”

The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme (list below) choose a book, compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite. Future week’s themes are listed below. This week’s theme:
Alien – “Aliens – if they exist-are little green men with big eyes and spindly arms…or giant insects or something like a lumpy little creature”
This week is a no-brainer for me. The first book I thought of was The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and below is a small selection of covers that I think covers the alien theme:
I like a few of these I have to admit – the little guy on the bottom row with his suitcase is kind of cute and check out the little white mice! But this is my favourite:

Do not ask me why but it just gives me a Howl’s Moving Castle vibe! Next week: two choices – either Playing Cards or covers that are mostly the colour green.
Which is your favourite?
Future themes:
03/03/2017 – Playing cards “Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well” or – Spring: a cover that is mainly the colour green.
10/03/2017 – School “I never let my schooling interfere with my education”
17/03/2017 – Bird “Some birds are not meant to be caged, that’s all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs are too sweet and wild”
24/03/2017 – Street lamp “He stood under the street lamp, sleet settling in his hair, hands fisted at his side”
31/03/2017 – Casino “Whisky, gambling and Ferraris are better than housework “
07/04/2017 – Circus “You can get the monkey off your back, but the circus never leaves town!
14/04/2017 – Easter “The rabbit of Easter. He bring of the chocolate”
21/04/2017 – Bridge “I demolish my bridges behind me…then there is no choice but to push forward”
28/04/2017 – Beach/Seaside”Oh I do like to be beside the seaside!”
05/05/2017 – Lion “If you place your head in a lion’s mouth, then you cannot complain one day if he happens to bite it off”
12/05/2017 – Phone “Don’t use the phone. People are never ready to answer it”
19/05/2017 – Plane “When everything seem to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it ….”
26/05/2017 – Mice “Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, ‘it might have been’…”
02/06/2017 – Moon “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars”
09/06/2017 – Mummy “It shuffles through the dry, dusty darkness”
16/06/2017 – Guitar “You couldn’t not like someone who liked the guitar”
23/06/2017 – Cat “In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this”
30/06/2017 – Hat “It is always cruel to laugh at people, of course, although sometimes if they are wearing an ugly hat it is hard to control yourself “
07/07/2017 – Gold “All that is gold does not glitter”
14/07/2017 – Boats “The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea, in a beautiful pea green boat…”

Just finished reading THGtoG by Douglas Adams. This isn’t the first time I’ve read this book and probably won’t be the last. I picked up an old paperback a couple of weeks ago at a used book store and as the cover says published in 1979 I’m including this as one of my books on the Vintage Sci Fi event hosted by Little Red Reviewer. I’m also including on Stainless Steel Droppings Sci-Fi experience.
I love this book and can quite genuinely say I don’t think that I’ll ever become bored with it. It’s such a funny take on all things sci fi! If you haven’t read it you definitely need to do so, even if you’ve watched the series or seen the film you should still read this book. That’s right, I’m looking at you and don’t make me come over there!
The story starts with Arthur Dent waking to find his home almost in the process of being demolished in order to make way for a bypass- which turns out to be small fry as we swiftly move on to find out that the whole planet is about to be laid waste by a Vogon Constructor Fleet also in order to make way for a bypass. Arthur is of course rescued in the final minute by his friend Ford Prefect – who isn’t in fact from the planet earth but was left stranded there 15 years earlier – he’s actually from the planet Beetlegeuse and writes snippets for the Hitch Hikers Guide.
We then follow Arthur and Ford as they fall from one near fatal experience to the next.
The characters involved, as well as the above mentioned, – Trillian, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin the Paranoid Android. I love these characters. Particularly Marvin – how can you have a paranoid android! I took this snippet from the last couple of chapters where Ford finds Marvin lying face down on the floor (well more trips over him than finds!)
‘Marvin! he exclaimed. ‘What are you doing?” ‘Dont feel you have to take any notice of me, please,’ came a muffled drone. ‘But how are you, metalman?’ said Ford. “very depressed.” “What’s up?” “I don’t know,” said Marvin, “I’ve never been there.” “Why,” said Ford squatting down beside him and shivering, “are you lying face down in the dust?” “It’s a very effective way of being wretched,” said Marvin.
Okay, that’s probably not the best bit to choose but I found it funny.
I mean, it’s not just a funny book though, it’s also thought provoking and takes a look at all sorts of issues, a bit of politics, a bit of religion, a bit of friendship.
Basically, don’t take my word for it – go and read it. It’ll only take a few hours out of your life and I think it’ll give you a kick. Everybody needs a bit of humour in their life and if you like, for example, Monty Python or Blackadder then this book can’t possibly fail!
Hey, you can have my beaten up copy that originally sold for 80p if it’ll make you read it!!
