Friday Face Off : Good vs Evil

Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme created by Books by Proxy . This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers. The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme (list below) choose a book (this doesn’t have to be a book that you’ve read), compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite. Future’s themes are listed below – if you have a cover in mind that you’re really wanting to share then feel free to leave a comment about a future suggested theme. I’ve also listed events that take place during the year, that I’m aware of, so you can link up your covers – if you’re aware of any events that you think I should include then give me a shout.
I’ve added themes in below. For information, I’m trying out some new ideas so along with coming up with particular items for book covers I thought we could also look for certain elements contained within the book or that play a large part in the story – this really broadens things out because I have plenty of more ideas with this – I’ve gone for a few of the Tough Travel Themes (so a book with that theme – just choose any book – the theme isn’t necessarily on the cover, then compare covers), also, I’ve thrown in some genres and some colours. Hopefully this will open things out a little and give us some more freedom to come up with new books.

Good vs Evil
Well, in my quest to shine a light on my most recent reads I’ve chosen two books this week one that I read this year and one the year before. This was a new to me author but definitely an author that I now watch eagerly to see what she writes next. I decided to go for a face off with the two books. So, we have All The Murmuring Bones and The Path of Thorns by AG Slatter. Both are dark fairytales and so the good vs evil feels are strong.
Difficult to choose really because I like both styles for different reasons. I’m immediately drawn to the Murmuring Bones. I like the colour and also I’m a sucker for the tail because it screams mythical sea creature to me. Then we have the simplicity of the Thorns cover with the subtle clues of what’s waiting amongst the pages.

Well, we are definitely in the right season for this weeks theme and I’m so happy to have a book this week that is a very recent read. So recent, in fact, that my review is not yet posted (although it will be soon, and, spoiler alert – it was really good). So, Cackle by Rachel Harrison. Here are the two covers:

Guess who’s back? – Vampires – popular again?
You just have to love vampires (there’s just something intriguing about the immortality of the immortals). Of course, every now and again they fall out of fashion but then we start to miss them all over again. Is it just me or do we seem to be enjoying a resurgence of the undead? Anyway, I recently read and loved Dowry of Blood by ST Gibson – my review will be up next week. I also have another book that I’m very much looking forward to called Reluctant Immortals by Gwendolyn Kiste. So, this week I’m going for a double whammy – a book I’ve already devoured and one that’s lined up ready. See what you think:

Well, with the first book I love all the little attention to detail elements that are pulled onto the first cover and it’s very much I style that I like but this week I’ve going for the more sophisticated cover. The second set of covers are very colourful – the first cover I’m not really sure about – but then I’ve not read the story yet so it could fit the content perfectly. Without that knowledge though I’m going for the second cover. So my choices this week:

Something from the horror genre
This week, well I don’t read a great deal of horror but I try and squeeze a few in here and there. I’m fairly certain that I’ve used the first book from the Platserna series by John Ajvide Lindqvist so today I’ve gone for No.2 – I Always Find You. These were definitely some scary books – take a look at the covers:
I never realised how downright creepy bathtubs could be!
But my favourite:
This cover fits with the first book in the series and I love the colours and the creeping darkness looming above.

Again, I didn’t have a cover for this week planned but, as it happens, I think A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers fits the theme perfectly. And, it’s an excellent book that I highly recommend. Here are the covers:
