Kushiel’s Justice by Jacqueline Carey, readalong week No.8

Kushiel's justiceToday is week 8 of our readalong of Kushiel’s Justice by Jacqueline Carey.  The schedule and participants are below.  All welcome to join in or to simply jump in with the comments.  This week we cover chapters 57-65 hosted by Allie at Tethyan Books. Without further ado, to the questions with the customary warning of spoilers and the invitation to join in with the comments.

1. Imriel actually gave up the quest for justice before he found Berlik, and would have left empty-handed if the man had not come to him.  Does knowing that their eventual encounter was of Berlik’s choosing change the way you think about how it finally ended? How do you think this will affect Imriel, moving forward?
I think that the way things worked out will probably make it easier for Imriel to deal with.  He’d already made a decision to drop his quest after all.  At the end of the day it felt more like something that Berlik wanted more than anything – he couldn’t live with himself and wanted justice – and he thought it was better for his people so even in his last act he believed himself to be helping them.  Under the circumstances I think Imriel will feel that he served justice.  I think he will struggle more with the two soldiers who he killed in self defence.
2. I was definitely not expecting to see Maslin in the Vralian wilderness!  What do you think of his motivations?  Do you think it’s still possible for them to build the friendship Imriel wanted so dearly many years ago?
I’m not entirely sure what to make of his motivations for ever setting off to find Imriel.  After all he must have thought it was rather telling that Sidonie wanted him to go and find Imriel.  Perhaps he really would prove himself to Sidonie by bringing back his rival.  As it happened I think Maslin had a lot of time to think during his search and managed to reach his own conclusions about his relationship with Sidonie and even though it wasn’t a happy realisation for him I think he’s had enough time to realise the truth of the situation.  I think it is possible for Maslin and Imriel to be friends, particularly now they’ve been quite open with each other – although, it won’t be easy for Maslin to see Imriel and Sidonie together which will definitely be something of a cool note on just how friendly they become.
3. Imriel feels very strongly about going back through the places where he was dishonest or where he caused pain (Miroslas, Tarkov, the Vralian capital).  Do you think these stops were necessary?  Do you think he was right to not go to the pilgrim family that took Berlik in?
I think it speaks well of Imriel’s character that he wanted to go back through those places. Almost like now his quest is out of the way he wants to confess and throw himself on other  peoples’ mercy.  I’m not sure how I feel about him not revisiting the pilgrim family – it feels almost like a kindness not to go back and tell them the outcome..
4. We have another myth in the making: the dark angel and the light angel, battling for Berlik’s soul.  Clearly this isn’t literally true, since Maslin knew nothing about Berlik.  Do you think it carries any metaphorical truth with respect to Berlik’s struggle with his guilt?
I think Berlik had gone past the point of anyone battling for his soul.  I think a couple of things – he sought justice for the things he had done – moreso than Imriel or anyone else, he wanted to be found and he certainly didn’t put up a fight when he was found and, on top of that he believed that by atoning he was saving his people.
5. It looks like Tadeuz Vral will have another Yeshuite advisor now, in the Rebbe from Miroslas.  Do you think this will impact the path of Vralia in the future?  Do you think Imriel’s deceit will affect Vralia’s relationships with Alba and Terre d’Ange?
I suppose it could be something that comes back to haunt Imriel in the future.  Time will tell I suppose but I feel like he did what he had to do and he has at least been back to confess his deceit.  I’m not saying that in confessing it makes everything okay but it feels like a step in the right direction.

Cover Love: #SPFBO 2016

FullSizeRender-10

I’m currently taking part in the SPFBO 2016 challenge organised by Mark Lawrence.  My introductory post with details of the event here.

As part of this I wanted to first of all post all the covers for the books that have been selected for my batch.  There’s some impressive covers this year so it would be a shame not to spotlight them all.  (Apologies: I haven’t at this stage linked these to Goodreads but when I choose my batch of five each month I will do so).  I must admit that I’m really looking forward to getting started! Feast your eyes on these lovelies:

#artitupwithfriends : Evil Twins

For the month of May I am going to try and take part in a daily drawing challenge organised by @pabkins and @badaliceshop.  These will only be sketches but if you check out the #artitupwithfriends hashtag you’ll see some really excellent pieces of art!  Each day the aim is to sketch or draw using the word for the day.  Today is ‘Evil Twins’.  I really drew a blank with this one and my sketch reflects that I think!  I went for Jean Tannen’s weapon of choice, his twin hatchets, affectionally names ‘The Sisters’ – evil, well they could be in the right (or wrong) hands.  This is a sinister and sweet themed month.  Tomorrow’s prompt is ‘Puppet’.

There can be only one #SPFBO 2016

Last year I took part in the Self Published Fantasy Blog Off (#SPFBO) organised by Mark Lawrence which proved to be very successful (I think) (more details here).

This year sees the return of the competition with 300 entries being received and distributed between the bloggers taking part (10 bloggers with 30 books each).  The details for this year, the entrants and other bloggers can be found here.  I’ve listed below my entries for the competition and will shortly be doing a separate post that will highlight the book covers for all 30 titles.  Following that – I will schedule an introductory post each month with the five books I’m hoping to take a look at for that month – this will be a description of the book.  At this stage I will not have read any of the books but simply wish to try and spotlight them.  At the end of the month I hope to do a short round up of the books for that month.  Last year I had a rather ad hoc approach to the books on my list and the order in which I read them.  This year I haven’t quite made up my mind whether to read the books in order or not but regardless my monthly introduction will highlight the books I’m planning to look at.  My aim is to check out 5 books a month (although this could go over or under depending on how successful each book is).

I can safely say that last year was a learning curve for me, I approached the SPFBO very much as a reviewer and not as a publisher whittling down a pile of submissions.  This year I aim to stick to a certain percentage of reading time for each book before I decide to move on – I want to be as fair as I possibly can to each of the books and give them a fair opportunity but at the same time I intend to trust my instincts and I really do intend to wear a ‘publisher hat’ in order to do so.   As it says in the title, and indeed this could be a slogan for the whole competition, ‘there can be only one’ and even though it’s possible I will enjoy a number of the submissions I can only put one book forward – it’s harsh but it’s also the objective.  I will also aim to keep notes on each of the books so that I can hopefully provide some form of constructive feedback (although I make no promises in that respect – I will try my best to do so but sometimes when I get caught up in reading my good intentions leave the building).  Any book that I read fully will receive a review (I fell down on this area last year and didn’t review a couple of my first round books that I completed – although I did review all 10 of the finalists, which is part of the undertaking the way I see it.  Even so, I do like to review the books I complete – this depends on time.  If I complete all five books in a given month then perhaps short reviews, for example.

Good luck to all of the entrants and thank you so much for taking part – it wouldn’t be such a great event without all of you and I’m really looking forward to reading the entries this year.  We had some really good books last year and I hope the same goes for this year too!  Finally, thanks to Mark Lawrence for organising all of this :D.

Let the festivities commence – may the best book win and in the words (almost) of Tolkien:

“One book to rule them all’

For the month of May I am going to try and take part in a daily drawing challenge organised by @pabkins and @badaliceshop.  These will only be sketches but if you check out the #artitupwithfriends hashtag you’ll see some really excellent pieces of art!  Each day the aim is to sketch or draw using the word for the day.  Today is ‘Wishes’ and below is a rather terrible sketch but, oh well….  This is a sinister and sweet themed month.  Tomorrow’s prompt is ‘Evil Twins’.
