“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme that was created by Breaking the Spine. Every Wednesday we get to highlight a book that we’re really looking forward to. My book this week is : The Bones of the Earth by Rachel Dunne. Second in a series that got off to a good start with In the Shadow of the Gods.
A mismatched band of mortals and their violent, secretive leader must stand against a pair of resentful gods to save their world in this second volume in the breathtaking dark epic fantasy trilogy, The Bound Gods, begun with In the Shadow of the Gods.
To win the coming battle for control of the world and the mortals who dwell in it, the cunning priest Joros secretly assembled a team of powerful fighters—Scal, a lost and damaged swordsman from the North; Vatri, a scarred priestess who claims to see the future in her fires; Anddyr, a drug-addled mage wandering between sanity and madness; and Rora and Aro, a pair of twins who have secretly survived beyond the reach of the law.
But the war is only beginning for these disparate warriors and victory is far from certain when the enemy is a pair of vengeful gods. As the bound Twins strengthen in force against their parents—the Divine Mother and Almighty Father—who exiled them, a shadow begins to spread across the land, threatening to engulf all in its wake.
As deadly magic takes hold, the tenuous bonds tying these uneasy allies begins to unravel. If they cannot find a way to keep their band together, each of their lives—and the entire world—will be lost to the darkness, leaving nothing but the bones of the earth. . . .
Another one with not a long wait: due June 27th 2017

Tags: The Broke and the Bookish, Top Ten Tuesday

Every Tuesday over at The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic. This week’s topic is:
Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book
The opposite of last week’s list, I’ve tried to use the same headings, so here goes:
- Bloggers – if all the bloggers I chat with seem to be not really enjoying a book then I admit it puts me off reading, even if it’s a book I really want to read it will probably move down the ‘must read’ list – life is too short and whilst I like to form my own opinion if the popular opinion is generally against a particular book it will put me off picking it up or at least make me less eager to do so.
- Author – well, sometimes you can have an author that just doesn’t seem to work for you, their particular style maybe doesn’t do it for you. When this happens then, yes, maybe the first couple of times I’d put it down to experience and try another book but after that it would probably be a no go for me.
- Cover – just as a great cover makes me want to pick up the book, well, the opposite is obviously just as true. I would probably stay away from certain types of covers.
- Hype – yes, I used this last week, but while I do usually crumble in the face of popular opinion sometimes my stubborn streak just kicks in and the hype really does put me off.
- Part of a series – maybe the first or second book didn’t work out for me – I do have quite a number of uncompleted series.
- Genre – I know that authors don’t really like to be pigeon holed, but if a book falls into certain categories then I would probably not be very interested – not a judgement on any body else of course, just not my go to kind of book – romance, for example, I don’t mind my book having a romance along the way but just not the main focus.
- Content – I do tend to find insta love and love triangles a little over used and if I read about a book having such content then I would be less interested in reading.
- Certain descriptions – I’m not a really hard sci fi fan, simply because I figure things will go over my head.
- Unlikable characters. Characterisation is such a big selling point for me, Fantastic characters just make the book don’t they? If I’m reading a book and can’t get along with the character it will just slow the book down and ultimately stop me from picking it back up.
- What did I miss?

- Paternus by Dyrk Ashton (review here).
- The Grey Bastards by Jonathan French.
- Larcourt K A Krantz ( Fire Born, Blood Blessed #1) My review is here.

My final book is :
Assassin’s Charge (Echoes of Imara) by Claire Frank
A cold-hearted assassin. A boy with a price on his head.
Rhisia Sen is one of the Empire’s highest paid assassins. Living a life of luxury, she chooses her contracts carefully, working to amass enough wealth so she can leave her bloody trade. She is offered a new contract on the outskirts of civilization, and almost refuses—until she sees the purse. It could be the last job she ever has to take.
But when she reaches the destination, she discovers her mark is a child.
The contract, and her reputation, demand she kill the boy—if she can banish his innocent face from her mind. But another assassin has been sent to kill her, and a notorious bounty hunter is on her trail. She doesn’t know why the boy is a target, or why her former employer wants her dead. Saving the child could be her only chance at survival.

Hello my fellow bloggers, I was very pleased to be nominated recently for the One Lovely Blog Award by Jessica from The Bookworm Chronicles. A lovely blogger who I highly recommend by the way. And thank you so much Jessica for the nomination (I hope you don’t mind but I used your graphic – happy to remove it though if you prefer me not to).
- Thank the blogger who nominated you and link back to them.
- Share 7-15 facts about yourself.
- Nominate 9-15 bloggers you admire and contact them.
I’ve put my facts in a face off fashion. Here they are:
- TV vs Movies: Movies. I don’t tend to sit down at a regular time each evening or during any point of the day so I tend to not get into regular tv. Obviously I read a lot but otherwise I like to watch movies and by happy coincidence so does my partner.
- Sweet vs Savoury: Savoury for me every time. I like sweet things but I can pretty much take them or leave them.
- Wine vs Beer: Wine lover. My wine drinking tends to be seasonal with reds during the darker months and whites, sparkling and even roses sometimes during summer. Beer tends to give me a terrible headache the next day.
- Book vs e-book – I’m going to have to go with a tie for this one. I love reading e-books now which is something I never envisioned but carrying a kindle around is way easier and more convenient than carrying around a thousand page chunkster – and when you enjoy fantasy fiction there are a lot of chunky books out there.
- Dogs vs cats – well, I love both – but I have a dog so I’m going to go with dogs for this one. Nothing against our feline friends though just to be clear. I just love my pooch (my sister actually has five cats and three of them are gigantic!)
- Night vs morning: Night. I love the night time. It’s my time of day and I could happily stay up to the early hours. However, I hate getting up. I’m a sleep monster and could stay in bed until lunch time every day – if work would just stop being so stubborn about making me arrive first thing! So unreasonable.
- Warm vs cold. I’m not really a sun seeker. We do tend to go on quite a lot of breaks though and usually to warmer climates – my husband does love the sun, we’re one of those couples who have to find a spot which is part in the sun and part in the shade.
- Fantasy vs science fiction. Why – just why! Because. Anyway, sci fi is something I’m relatively new to. At the moment I’m just dipping my toes into the waters to see how I feel so of course fantasy is my winner of this debate. It’s my comfort zone and my escape route too.
- Scary vs Amusing – scary. I think most of us like something that gives us a scare every now and again. Fairground rides, horror movies, creepy, gothic reads. I do love a good laugh for sure but if, for example, I was choosing a film to watch I’d probably go for something a bit more dark than a funny flick.
- Home or away – I want both. I’m just greedy. I love visiting new places in fact it’s kind of addictive but there’s also nothing quite like coming home is there. I think my final one is a Mexican standoff. I simply cannot choose.
My Nominations:
I’m not going to choose any specific bloggers for no other reason than I invite everyone to take part if they so wish. Also, I’m lazy and this means I now don’t have to chose a specific list and contact everyone.
So, you are all lovely bloggers. I nominate all of you and would love to read what you come up with. Tell me something about you – pretty please.
