Waiting on Wednesday : The Bones of the Earth: A Bound Gods Novel by Rachel Dunne

“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme that was created by Breaking the Spine.  Every Wednesday we get to highlight a book that we’re really looking forward to.  My book this week is : The Bones of the Earth by Rachel Dunne.  Second in a series that got off to a good start with In the Shadow of the Gods.

bones ofthe.jpgA mismatched band of mortals and their violent, secretive leader must stand against a pair of resentful gods to save their world in this second volume in the breathtaking dark epic fantasy trilogy, The Bound Gods, begun with In the Shadow of the Gods.

To win the coming battle for control of the world and the mortals who dwell in it, the cunning priest Joros secretly assembled a team of powerful fighters—Scal, a lost and damaged swordsman from the North; Vatri, a scarred priestess who claims to see the future in her fires; Anddyr, a drug-addled mage wandering between sanity and madness; and Rora and Aro, a pair of twins who have secretly survived beyond the reach of the law.

But the war is only beginning for these disparate warriors and victory is far from certain when the enemy is a pair of vengeful gods. As the bound Twins strengthen in force against their parents—the Divine Mother and Almighty Father—who exiled them, a shadow begins to spread across the land, threatening to engulf all in its wake.

As deadly magic takes hold, the tenuous bonds tying these uneasy allies begins to unravel. If they cannot find a way to keep their band together, each of their lives—and the entire world—will be lost to the darkness, leaving nothing but the bones of the earth. . . .

Another one with not a long wait: due June 27th 2017

I missed this series. I love anything with the gods being real as part of their make up. I gotta say though, the girl on the cover is either falling or can jump REALLY high to get that snapshot.

Haha – yeah, females on books covers striking impossible poses – that never happened eh!
I’m going to say she’s falling although that’s probably not the best post to strike for hitting the ground – soft knees, etc!

I am not reading this series but it does sound good. Although, this cover is making me laugh, it’s such a ridiculous position for this poor girl. Why do artists always portray female characters like this?

    • @lynnsbooks

I really don’t know – it makes me laugh and tbh i almost overlooked this because it’s so very unlike the first cover. I’ve said to other commenters that it reminds me of the Princess in Shrek – which feels like a funny take on the Matrix.

What a striking difference from the cover of the first book – if I saw the two on a shelf, I’d never know they were the same series. Sounds like an interesting series, mind you, but this cover wouldn’t catch my eye like the first one.

I completely agree – in fact I nearly missed this book because it didn’t register with me that it was from the series (and like you said, it didn’t draw my eye in the same way as the first). This one reminds me of the first Shrek movie where the Princess fights (I think, the men in green tights) – I’m sure she strike this exact post and freezes mid air (n a Matrix style pose) before ninja kicking everyone’s arses.

I still need to read the first book! I’m with Bob though, what a difference in the covers. I didn’t even recognize this one to be in the same series, despite seeing the author’s name.

TBH – neither did I – in fact I nearly completely overlooked it. The cover reminds me of the Princess in the first Shrek movie – I’m sure I recall a scene where she jumps into mid air (like the cover) and pauses before ninja kicking a bunch of people.

This is new to me! What an interesting cover – that must have been fun to photograph and/or design. 😀 I hope you enjoy this book when you get the chance to read it!

    Have a fabulous week. =)

    Check out my WoW post!

Hi – it’s an odd cover and really nothing like the first one – in fact I nearly overlooked it because the covers are so very different.

Haven’t heard too much about this series, for whatever reason it just never made it onto my radar. I’m in stitches over the positioning of the woman on the cover though…so strange! 😂

I know – the Princess in the first Shrek movie (fighting with the men in green tights) immediately springs to mind.
