Can’t Wait Wednesday : The Bone Ships (The Tide Child #1) by R.J. Barker

Today is the start of Wyrd and Wonder – a month long event that is a celebration of fantasy.  Check out the details here and join in the fun in whatever way you would like to do so.

“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme that was originally created by Breaking Can't waitthe Spine.  Unfortunately Breaking the Spine are no longer hosting so I’m now linking my posts up to Wishful Endings Can’t Wait Wednesday. Don’t forget to stop over, link up and check out what books everyone else is waiting for.  If you want to take part, basically, every Wednesday, we highlight a book that we’re really looking forward to.  This week my book is :  The Bone Ships (The Tide Child #1) by R.J. Barker – could there be a better way to kick off my first post for W&W?  Check it out:

BoneShipsA crew of condemned criminals embark on a suicide mission to hunt the first sea dragon seen in centuries in the first book of this adventure fantasy trilogy.

Violent raids plague the divided isles of the Scattered Archipelago. Fleets constantly battle for dominance and glory, and no commander stands higher among them than “Lucky” Meas Gilbryn.

But betrayed and condemned to command a ship of criminals, Meas is forced on suicide mission to hunt the first living sea-dragon in generations. Everyone wants it, but Meas Gilbryn has her own ideas about the great beast. In the Scattered Archipelago, a dragon’s life, like all lives, is bound in blood, death and treachery.

April is over.  The first third of the year has simply flown.  I’m having a good time, in terms of books it’s been a good start to the year.  I hope you’ve all had a good start to 2019 and a good April too.  I’ve read two more of my SPFBO finalists and the reviews will follow shortly – and at the moment I’m still  keeping on top of my reviews although I do have a few outstanding from last year.  This month I’ve read a total of 11.  My month in covers is here and my month in reviews looks like this:

Books read:  this month = 11

  1. The Binding by Bridget Collins
  2. A Time of Blood by John Gwynne
  3. One Word Kill by Mark Lawrence
  4. The Brotherhood of the Wheel by RS Belcher
  5. Emily Eternal by M G Wheaton
  6. A Boy and His dog at the End of the World by CA Fletcher
  7. Storm of Locusts by Rebecca Roanhorse
  8. Little Darlings by Melanie Golding
  9. Ruthless Magic  by Megan Crewe

Review Books:

Even more restraint this month than last – I realise I have some catching up to do and I can’t do that by constantly adding more so here it is:

  1. Girls with Sharp Sticks by Suzanne Young – I’ve already read this and will review shortly – I really enjoyed it.
  2. For Emily by Katherine Slee
  3. The Absinthe Earl by Sharon Lynn Fisher

Cover compare:

I like both covers but the little blue shoe cover appeals more to me.

Which is your favourite?

Hope you’ve all had a good month.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme where every Tuesday we look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) bookish examples to demonstrate that particular topic.  Top Ten Tuesday (created and hosted by  The Broke and Bookish) is now being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and future week’s topics can be found here.  This week’s topic is:

Inspirational/Thought-Provoking Book Quotes

‘Even the smallest person can change the course of history’ –  Lady Galadriel, Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien.  I like this – it has nothing to do with the fact that I’m just over 5 feet in height.  Nothing I tell you.

‘It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends’ Albus Dumbledore Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling

‘What I say is, a town isn’t a town without a bookstore. It may call itself a town, but unless it’s got a bookstore, it knows it’s not foolin’ a soul.’ – American Gods by Neil Gaiman.  So very, very true.

‘The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.’ Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen.  Enough said.

‘The trip from could to should is short and allows little time for reflection.’ – Red Sister by Mark Lawrence.  Quite right – ‘could I stay up all night to finish this book?’ – yes, of course I could.  Should I though…yes, yes I should, most definitely.

‘Yes my lord, but questions are dangerous, for they have answers’ – Kushiel’s Dart, Jacqueline Carey

‘If only there could be an invention that bottled up a memory, like scent. And it never faded, and it never got stale. And then, when one wanted it, the bottle could be uncorked, and it would be like living the moment all over again.’ Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier.  This suggestion didn’t go over terribly well in the book and yet I quite like the idea.

“Think it over, think it under.” —Winnie-the-Pooh by AA Milne

‘There is no place like home.’ – The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum

I leave this one blank for you to tell me your favourite quote
