Vintage Sci Fi: Book No.30

vintage-sf-badgeNo.30 Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne

As part of Vintage Sci Fi month being hosted by Little Red Reviewer I’ve given myself a small challenge to post a vintage book each day – one that I’ve read – and to highlight some of the covers.   Today’s choice, like yesterday’s, is a bit sneaky – I’m reading both these two books but haven’t finished or reviewed them yet – but they definitely need highlighting because they are great classics.  Today: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.  First published in 1870 this is considered one of Verne’s most popular works.  My dad gave me this book and I’m kind of disappointed that I’ve not been able to finish it yet but I’ve been overtaken by life and other deadlines!

Vintage Sci Fi: Book No.29

vintage-sf-badgeNo.29 Starship Troopers by Robert A Heinlein

As part of Vintage Sci Fi month being hosted by Little Red Reviewer I’ve given myself a small challenge to post a vintage book each day – one that I’ve read – and to highlight some of the covers.   Today’s choice and tomorrow’s choice are a little bit sneaky – and I will explain.  These are two books that I’m currently reading but haven’t yet finished or reviewed but I think they’re great examples and so they’re going on the list: Starship Troopers by Robert A Heinlein.  I really like the first edition for this one.

vintage-sf-badgeNo.28 Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey

As part of Vintage Sci Fi month being hosted by Little Red Reviewer I’ve given myself a small challenge to post a vintage book each day – one that I’ve read – and to highlight some of the covers.   Today’s choice is : Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey.   First published in 1968 two of the short stories that make up the first book made McCaffrey the first woman to win a Huge or Nebula Award.

Let’s look at covers.  Starting with a first edition:

vintage-sf-badgeNo.27 War of the Worlds by H G Wells

As part of Vintage Sci Fi month being hosted by Little Red Reviewer I’ve given myself a small challenge to post a vintage book each day – one that I’ve read – and to highlight some of the covers.   Today’s choice is : War of the Worlds by H G Wells.  I’ve just read and reviewed this.  On balance, a good book with some great quotes.  I personally preferred The Time Machine by Wells.  Review here.  Today let’s look at some cover art:

vintage-sf-badgeNo.26 She by H Rider Haggard

As part of Vintage Sci Fi month being hosted by Little Red Reviewer I’ve given myself a small challenge to post a vintage book each day – one that I’ve read – and to highlight some of the covers.   Today’s choice is : She by Rider Haggard.  Okay, strictly speaking this is a bit of a tricksy one – because given the nature of the book and also given the author, I would say this falls more in the field of adventure/fantasy – but, I think the concept of a lost world, the immortality contained here and the special magical abilities of Ayesha – who is a sorceress who can heal and read minds – well, I’m just going with it!  Originally serialised and published in 1887 this is one of the original classics and has never been out of print:
