Halloween Freebie

I’m going to go with 10 books that you can either read or watch the adaptation for Halloween:
- Bram Stoker’s Dracula – lots of adaptations for this and various spin offs. I love this book.
- Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein – I love this book too. Thought provoking not to mention the inspiration for many adaptations. Let me know if you have a favourite. Strangely enough I love the comedy adaptation Young Frankenstein.
- The Shining by Stephen King. I saw the film long before I read the book and actually thought it was pretty damn scary – but, having now read the book – wow!
- I am Legend by Richard Matheson. Another great book that probably became the inspiration for countless zombie books and movies. Now, I’m not going to lie – I prefer the book to the adaptation, I think the film is a good film but I don’t like that the ending was changed.
- The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. Okay, not maybe so scary but a great read for Halloween and plenty of adaptations.
- Salem’s Lot by Stephen King. This is one scary book and adaptation (i’m thinking of the adaptation that was in two parts). Brrrr.
- The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. I like the old black and white version of this book – more atmospheric. Regardless of which adaptation you watch the book makes a great read.
- Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire. Both equally. I saw the film before reading the book and having now picked this one up I think the adaptation is really good.
- Carrie by Stephen King. I read this book as a teenager and I was going through my phase of reading all the horror and dark things – I thought the film was brilliant too – excellent performances by Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.
- I’ve left this one blank so you can recommend something for me to read/watch
And, I’ll leave you with these three:

Oh look, another glorious morning. Makes me sick!

- It Happened one Doomsday
- The Bear and the Nightingale
- The Fifth House of the Heart
- The Wheel of Osheim
- The Curious Affair of the Somnambulist and the Psychic Thief
- Flowers for Algernon
- The Punch Escrow

Top Ten Yummy Foods Mentioned In Books
It’s odd because food and drink plays a much bigger part in books than you think – especially once you start to really consider it:
- Joanne Harris – Chocolat? Need I say more really, but also Blackberry Wine and Five Quarters of the Orange. Delicious books.
- Scott Lynch’s Gentleman Bastard series – oh my lord, he conjures up some treats, A Ginger Scald particularly stands out – this is a drink that might give you a serious hangover though.
- Jacqueline Carey – never fails to come up with all sorts of delicious foods depending on which series you’re reading and what travels are being experienced.
- Sunshine by Robin McKinley- lots of mentions of Cinnamon Swirl buns – oh yes, give them to me now.
- Seanan McGuire’s Toby Daye – coffee, Toby loves coffee, and so do I in the morning – not after lunch though. Tea is for the afternoon.
- Speaking of tea, The Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger – lots of cups of tea, because everything is obviously improved by a good cup of rosie – isn’t it?
- Harry Potter – you have to give it to JKRowling – those banquets, not to mention the breakfasts – just wow!
- Cookies – everyone has to love cookies and Mercy Thompson (Patricia Briggs) loves to bake cookies when she’s stressing out about something – so basically every book she makes tray loads of them!
- Lambas bread – Lord of the Rings. Bread that fills you up after a bite – bring it to me now.
- ??? this one is for you… suggestions???

Ten Books With Fall/Autumn Covers
I’ve actually picked a whole bunch (more than 10) covers for books that I’ve either read or I have a copy of – but, these are not so much autumn covers as that the colour’s just make me think of autumn.

Top Ten Book Boyfriends/Girlfriends
I didn’t think I’d have any book boyfriends but when I started to consider this list I realised that perhaps I did! Here they are:
- Jean Tannen – Scott Lynch’s Gentleman Bastard series – Jean actually is MY book boyfriend. Nobody else’s. Just mine.
- Tybalt – okay – I defo have book boyfriends now I’ve started to think on it because Tybalt from Seanan McGuire’s Toby Daye series is very easy on the brain – definite mind candy.
- Joscelin Verreuil of Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel’s Legacy series. Okay, so far I’ve got more book boyfriends than I originally thought. Joscelin is very easy to like. Very easy indeed. Not to mention pretty handy when it comes to getting out of bother. Plus, this guy is super chilled!
- Aragorn – did I nearly forget Aragorn? This list wouldn’t be complete without Aragorn. Did I have a massive crush on Aragorn when I originally read LotR?? Why yes, yes I did. Doesn’t everyone really have a crush on Aragorn. Thank you Mr Tolkien.
- Rhett Butler. Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind. Again, a book I read as a teenager and had a mad desperate crush on Rhett Butler. Who could ever want Ashley when Rhett was around!
- Maxim De Winter. I love Max. Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier. He’s got this wonderfully superior aloofness that just makes you want to grab his attention. Not to mention a little bit of a temper.
- Seth McGregor. Gillian Philip’s Rebel Angel series. Seth definitely has sex appeal. I can’t deny it. I will just say though that this is not a romantic series at all – just Seth has this whole ‘thing’ going on.
- Alexander from Paullina Simon’s Bronze Horseman. I loved this book so much. Yes, it’s a romance novel. I can’t deny it, but it was so, so, good.
- Jamie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. This is such a good series – and a pretty good adaptation for tv as well.
- I’ve left this one free so you can make some suggestions????
Plus – can I just….
