Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme where every Tuesday we all look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) bookish examples to demonstrate that particular topic.  Top Ten Tuesday (created and hosted by  The Broke and Bookish) is now being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and future week’s topics can be found here.  This week’s topic is :

Bookish resolutions

Which obviously I absolutely will/maybe/not keep:

  1. I will not rubber neck over people’s shoulder on public transport to see what they’re reading.  It’s just rude.  It actually gives me a stiff neck – and book envy (see No.2).
  2. I will not have book envy.  Under no circumstances will envy be a part of my life where books are concerned.  It hardly ever happens now so this resolution will be a piece of cake.
  3. Speaking of cake….
  4. I will write reviews immediately that I finish reading a book instead of leaving them until I have a backlog – because backlogs are not fun.
  5. I CAN walk past a book store. It can happen.  There is no try.
  6. Seriously – on a serious note – I would like to read some of my own books and make a dent in an ever groaning TBR.
  7. Being careful – I will actually be a bit more careful about requesting books.  I’m gradually getting my reading ratio to a reasonable level and I’d like to improve it a little bit more.
  8. Organisation.  This is a thing that I should be able to do.   Maybe, Almost certainly. Perhaps.
  9. Stop boring those people not at all interested about books with my book talk – when they’re clearly not book people.  Just stop.  Walk away.
  10. You decide – what should I do more of/less of/stop altogether.  Okay, I’ll just get my things..

You will, you will, you will.

Ten Books I Meant To Read In 2017 But Didn’t Get To (but mean to read in 2018):

  1. Tower of Thorns by Juliet Marillier.  The books in the Blackthorn & Grim series are beautiful to look at and equally beautiful to read.
  2. Veil of the Deserters by Jeff Salyards.  I loved the first book in this series (Scourge of the Betrayers and really need to pick this one up.
  3. The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman – New York in the 1970s – and vampires.  Of course I have to read this.
  4. Lost Boy by Christina Henry – will I ever get bored of retellings or reimagining of Peter Pan?  Possibly not.
  5. The Girls at the Kingfisher Club by Genevieve Valentine – to quote from GRs ‘a “gorgeous and bewitching” reimagining of the fairytale of the Twelve Dancing Princesses as flappers during the Roaring Twenties in Manhattan.  OMG – why haven’t I read this one yet.
  6. Doomsday Book by Connie Willis – I heard such glowing things for this one that I rushed to buy it – and yet here it sits.  Go figure.
  7. Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch – a series I intend to complete.
  8. Beyond Redemption by Michael R Fletcher – the ultimate grim dark??  I need to read it and find out.
  9. The Straight Razor Cure by Daniel Polansky.  This book received 5*s from Mark Lawrence – which is good enough for me.
  10. Den of Wolves by Juliet Marillier – the third book in the Blackthorn and Grim series – now if I can only get my act together and read No.1 this can then happen.  Make it so.

Every Tuesday over at  The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic.  This week’s topic is Ten New to Me Authors from 2017 – however, I swapped this for an earlier December topic which should have actually been Top Ten Favourite Books.  Now, I already posted my favourite books yesterday (you can find them here, and I already posted 10 New to me Authors which you can find here).  So, in keeping with the favourite books theme I’m posting ten (more) must read books from 2017.

Ten ‘Must Reads’ from 2017

  1. The White Road by Sarah Lotz.  I really enjoyed this one.  Sarah Lotz is a really good author at creating tension.
  2. The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden.  Very unique.  I loved the world created and was absolutely fascinated with the turn of events.  Futuristic/near future with Gods and robots.
  3. Devil’s Call by J Danielle Dorn.  This book was gripping.  I couldn’t put it down.  Darkly magical with a hint of malice.
  4. The Punch Escrow by Tal M. Klein.  This is sci fi – with a thoroughly engrossing concept based around travel.
  5. Sea of Rust by C Robert Cargill.  A book with no humans.  Difficult to pull off and yet Cargill succeeds in making this compulsive.
  6. The Last Dog on Earth Adrian J. Walker.  I loved this.  I really enjoyed being inside the dog’s head – be warned though, the dog can be a little bit foul mouthed.
  7. Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell.  This is a fun and creative series.  A real keeper.  I’ve already read the second and enjoyed it every bit as much as the first.
  8. Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky.  This was unexpectedly excellent.  I went into this read thinking it might not be for me what with all the military elements.  It completely took me by surprise.
  9. The Naturalist by Andrew Mayne.  A series of deaths and a scientist who refuses to ignore the clues.  This one was such a compulsive page turner.
  10. Kill Creek by Scott Thomas. Four horror writers meeting in a haunted house on Halloween  what could possible go wrong.  Very well done.

Every Tuesday over at  The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic.  I’ve swapped this week’s topic – it should be ‘Top Ten Favorite Books of 2017’ – but I never do a favourites list until the New Year – still time to fit a few more books in don’t you know.  So, I’m using the topic scheduled for the New Year – 2nd Jan:
