Late Eclipses (#4 Toby Daye) by Seanan McGuire, readalong week 3

late1

Late Eclipses is the fourth installment of the highly praised Toby Daye series and I can seriously say I’m firmly hooked on this series now!

Today is week three of our readalong of  Late Eclipses (October Daye #4) ) by Seanan McGuire) arranged by Lisa from Over the Effing Rainbow.  This week Lisa is hosting the  Q&A which is a slight change to the schedule.  I’ve been out of the country so my post is a little late – for which apologies.

The details are over here on Goodreads – the schedule is below.  If you want to join in or jump in with the comments then please do so.  Without further ado here are the questions and answers with a customary word of warning that spoilers will be lurking below:

Week 1: Saturday 2nd July, Chapters 1 to 9, hosted by Over the Effing Rainbow
Week 2: Saturday 9th July, Chapters 10 to 18, hosted by Lynn’s Book Blog
Week 3: Saturday 16th July, Chapters 19 to 27, hosted by Books By Proxy
Week 4: Saturday 23rd July, Chapters 28 to End, hosted by Hisham El-far

1. We get to meet a new character in the form of Walter, who’s got a rather unusual special skill among the Fae… What are your first impressions of our first faerie scientist in the Tobyverse?

I really liked Walter and I hope we get to see a lot more of him – he’s the perfect scientific accompaniment to Toby’s ‘detective’!  I think they make a great pair.  Well, I’m not saying that they’re going to become a pair necessarily but I like him and I think it would be good to see more involvement in future investigations.

2. “I choose the evil I know.”

We finally get to meet Amandine (sort of) in the flesh, and she’s got one hell of a bombshell to drop… How surprised were you by the revelation of Toby’s bloodline, and by her second Choice?

I’m not totally sure I understand what Toby actually is if I’m being really honest – or what the revelation actually meant.  It seems that she’s more fae than was originally suspected – the scene with Amandine – I’m reading into that that the first time Toby was given a choice between her half fae self or a human life – the choice was in actual fact more difficult than that.  Amandine was hiding what Toby really was?  Is that how everyone else reads this as I’m not sure whether I’m on track or not here.  The only reason I can imagine Amandine hiding Toby’s real nature is that she maybe thinks she will be in more danger by revealing her true self?  I’m mixed up without doubt!

3. Rayseline’s reasons for hating Toby come out in the open, though that doesn’t put a stop to her efforts to have Toby removed from her position… Do you think she deserves more or less sympathy now, after their confrontation(s)?

I admit that I felt a degree of sympathy for Rayseline when she was explaining to Toby why she dislikes her so much.  I don’t agree with her reasoning but I think it makes things a little easier to understand from her point of view.  At least when she thought Toby was dead it was easier to accept that she hadn’t come to the rescue.  But, what also puzzles me about that is I can’t help wondering if she blames Sylvester as well?  So, yes, I think it made me feel sorry for Raysel but at the same time her reasoning isn’t sound.  Like I said last week, it sort of irritates me that everyone keeps beating on Toby for not coming to the rescue when she was turned into a fish.  She was just a teeny bit indisposed.

4. “We were peaceful while you were gone.”

Speaking of scheming to remove Toby, the Queen is handed a chance to lock her up and takes it – and she doesn’t waste much time or show much mercy. What do you make of her reasons for what she’s done? Is that all that’s driving her or do you think there might be something deeper and darker behind it?

I definitely think there’s something more to all of this but I don’t really know what.  Nobody seemed to really agree with the Queen’s verdict – in fact it was clearly unjust and made her look bad.  She’s unhinged for sure and maybe Raysel has been pouring poison in her ear and stirring things up.  Perhaps the two of them were planning some sort of pact.

5. And what about Oleander? It seems she isn’t a figment of Toby’s imagination after all – but how is she managing to stay so close without being found? Any guesses/theories/suspicions?

I really don’t understand how Oleander is doing this – the only thing I can think of, and it doesn’t really make sense, is that she’s being helped and the only person I can think is helping her is Raysel!  See, it really doesn’t make sense at all!  Raysel doesn’t seem to be too upset about what’s happening with her own mother, neither does she seem to be helping Sylvester – she seems to be making a play for power and the Queen seems to be helping her.  Not sure how that all feeds into what Oleander is doing – she seems to be omnipresent!  Or she’s stolen a cloak of invisibility from HP.  Maybe she can transform into inanimate objects!  Yeah, I have no idea.

An Artifical Night by Seanan McGuire, Readalong No.3

artificial night

Today is week three of our readalong of An Artificial Night (October Daye #3) ) by Seanan McGuire) arranged by Lisa from Over the Effing Rainbow.  This week I am hosting the Q&A.  I have to say that this book is so good!  And I also have to say, who chose to end the chapters there exactly – oh the torture – we’re all looking at you Lisa!  Torture…..

The details are over here on Goodreads – the schedule is below.  If you want to join in or jump in with the comments then please do so.  Without further ado here are the questions and answers with a customary word of warning that spoilers will be lurking below:

Week 1: Saturday 9th April, Chapters 1-7, hosted by Over The Effing Rainbow
Week 2: Saturday 16th April, Chapters 8-17, hosted by Books By Proxy
Week 3: Saturday 23rd April, Chapters 18-24, hosted by Lynn’s Book Blog
Week 4: Saturday 30th April, Chapters 25-End, hosted by Over the Effing Rainbow

1. We’ve seen a good deal more of May and her interactions with Toby – any speculation on how this might play out yet??

Well, I must confess that I’m liking May very much and in a strange and unexpected fashion I hope that she’s going to stick around.  Maybe she’ll be a permanent feature constantly reminding Toby of how close to death she becomes.  The fact is I’m not sure that she will stick around although I would like it if she did.  She seems to really be trying to help Toby which is so great because she’s absolutely working against her own objectives and that makes me think that maybe she’s going to take the fall here somehow because she’s started to care.  Somebody is going to have to pay Blind Michael somehow – unless he’s defeated, of course, so I’m thinking that maybe May will take Toby’s place at some point???  I hope not.  I’m hoping this will all work out.  But, at the end of the day she is Toby’s fetch and I definitely don’t want toby to die!

2. Tybalt – what did you make of his rather cryptic comment about what he found out and particularly that he now knows that Toby didn’t lie to him?

I am really puzzled by this and kind of hoping that somebody else can shed some light on it.  Tybalt is clearly looking into something and he obviously had a spell there where he suspected that Toby wasn’t being honest – or maybe he suspected everyone and has at least found out that Toby was being honest – but about what??  Chuck me a bone somebody???  Is it about Toby’s abilities or what she inherited from her mum??  He seemed really surprised in the last book when Toby resurrected somebody and I wonder if he thought this was something she was aware of already?

3. We finally discovered a little bit more about Luna. What are your thoughts on her now, why did she run away, thoughts about her character, why she sent Toby into Michael’s realm?

This is a very complicated situation.  She obviously ran away from home and she’s been hiding ever since – and quite successfully by the sounds of it.  It does make it a little bit clearer now as to why she always seems so sad and reflective.  I really don’t blame Luna for running away – things were obviously not okay.  As a result of course Michael now has the hunt and steals all these children to help him search for her (unless I’m reading it wrong) – she must feel so incredibly bad. If she wasn’t in hiding then surely Michael wouldn’t take these other children.  It’s a really awful situation and one that part of me thinks she needs to step up and do something – but then the other side of me completely understands why she’s staying in hiding!  It’s so incredibly conflicted.

4. What were your first impressions of the Court of Cats?

I loved paying a visit – I loved even more that they’re so selective who they let in – and yet even more I loved that Tybalt said that Toby is always welcome!  It kind of reminded me of the alleys and fight grounds in West Side Story.  I don’t know why and I can’t even describe it but that’s what it reminded me of!

5. And, finally, back to Tybalt – what on earth just happened!!

I don’t knowwwwwwww!  What just happened.  Is he just exhausted?  Has he travelled too far too fast.  Or has he taken Toby to somewhere that he can’t exist?  What happened.  I’m almost sure that Tybalt hasn’t died – almost!!!  However, there is still a tiny tremor of dread!  No, Ms Mcguire – just no.  No messing with the King of Cats!

A Local Habitation (October Daye #2) by Seanan McGuire, readalong week No.1

localhabbanner.pngToday is week one of our readalong of A Local Habitation (No.2 October Daye by Seanan McGuire) arranged by Lisa from Over the Effing Rainbow.  I read the first book as part of a readalong at the start of the year and thought it got off to a good start but so far book No.2 is totally kicking arse!

The schedule is as follows, It’s not too late to join in so if you’re looking for a great new UF series this could be the one for you.

Week 1: Saturday 5th March, Chapters 1-8 hosted by Over The Effing Rainbow
Week 2: Saturday 12th March, Chapters 9-16 – hosted by Lynn’s Book Blog (me!)
Week 3: Saturday 19th March, Chapters 17-25 – hosted by Books By Proxy
Week 4: Saturday 26th March, Chapters 26-end – hosted by The Bibliosanctum

All are welcome to join in and there’s a discussion page over on Goodreads if that makes it easier to join.  Without further ado here are the questions and answers with a customary word of warning that spoilers will be lurking below:

1. Some familiar faces are back for book 2 (hi Tybalt!), but we don’t waste much time getting to meet some new people, most notably Sylvester Torquill’s niece, January, who is … less than upfront with Toby at first meeting. What do you think of January so far?

Firstly – yes, hello Tybalt!!  Woohoo those opening scenes.  Oh yes!

Anyway.

Well, I guess so far I’d say she comes across as a little inexperienced – or maybe it’s just that she’s trying to stand on her own two feet and too proud to ask for help ((or maybe she’s asking for help but not getting through?).  Not sure really.  She is definitely not playing with a straight bat when she first meets Toby and I’m not sure why but I think that given the nature of some of the conversations so far (where she think’s she’s been calling Sylvester and vice versa) I think something is rotten in Denmark and maybe it’s something that’s outside her control.

2. Another new face is April, who’s got a rather unique back story according to Alex. What do you make of her so far, and what do you think of the merging of magic and technology that seems set to be the underlying theme in this book?

I quite like the idea of merging magic and technology but I’m not sure I completely believe it yet as it doesn’t seem to usually mix with the fae does it as they always come across as almost medieval somehow? The story with Alex – well, that was a sad story wasn’t it.  I can’t help wondering about her being the only one to escape.  Is she just terribly unique and lucky and managed to escape against all the odds whilst all the other of her kind died, or is she slightly smarter and managed to escape but is now basically fuming.  Come on.  She would be livid wouldn’t she – or maybe I’m looking for potential suspects!!!  And, she’s all mixed up in the IT – the messenger no less, and nobody’s telephone calls are getting through to each other *waggles eyebrows in a most unflattering way*!!!!!  I’m such an over thinker, I know!

3. Do any of the rest of the new faces stand out to you here? If so, who and why?

I would love to know what’s going on with Alex and Terrie (might have got that name wrong). They both seem so appealing don’t they?  Now, don’t get me wrong, they both could be very appealing or maybe they’re like using some sort of glamour – okay, I’m over thinking but this is the fae.

4. We get some explanation of the political situation where Tamed Lightning is concerned, and by the end of this section we’ve got a body on the ground at ALH Computing… Got any initial thoughts/suspicions/things you still want to know.

I want to know EVERYTHING.  And, I’ll tell you why – because, I have absolutely no idea yet about what’s going on here in Tamed Lightning – but *and shakes finger knowingly* something is definitely going on!

That’s it for me this week.  This got off to a great start – Tybalt from almost the get go!!

Rosemary and Rue October Daye #1, by Seanan McGuire, readalong week 2

Today is week two of our Rosemary and Rue readalong arranged by Lisa from Over the Effing Rainbow.  I’ve been looking forward to reading this and so far it’s really living up to my expectations – this week’s chapters were great so I apologise for going overboard with the questions – but I had things on my mind and I needed answers!!

The schedule is as follows and it’s definitely not too late to join in so go and grab a copy – or if you’re already read it dive in with the comments:

Week 1: Saturday 9th January, Chapters 1-6, hosted by Lisa at Over the Effing Rainbow
Week 2: Saturday 16th January, Chapters 7-14, hosted by moi at Lynn’s Books
Week 3: Saturday 23rd January, Chapters 15-20, hosted by Anya at On Starships and Dragonwings
Week 4: Saturday 30th January, Chapters 21-End, hosted by Over the Effing Rainbow (still me!)

All are welcome to join in and there’s a discussion page over on Goodreads if that makes it easier to join.  Without further ado here are the questions and answers with a word of warning that spoilers will be lurking below:

1. We finally get to meet Devin and Sylvester. They’ve both played important roles in Toby’s life. What were your initial impressions of both of them and the worlds in which they live. What were your first thoughts about them?

I think I need more information about Devin and this whole setup of his because at the moment I’m not totally sure I understand what it’s all about.  He obviously has an interest in Toby (and by interest – I mean ‘an interest’!)  I can’t quite make my mind up at the moment if he’s being portrayed as a bit sleazy and dangerous but really he isn’t – or maybe really he is!  It’s interesting that he surrounds himself with slightly more vulnerable and younger types – so, he either has a heart of gold but likes to give off a ‘don’t mess with me attitude’ as a cover or he finds it easier to play the boss in this way.  I don’t really get the feeling it’s the latter.  Or maybe I’m just hoping that there’s more to him if you scratch the surface as at the moment I didn’t immediately dislike him or anything – although he has made something of a pact with Toby which I think she may regret.

Sylvester – he seemed to be so genuinely pleased, nay thrilled, to see Toby – twirling her around and grinning, acting all concerned, etc.  But, at the back of my mind, and I’m not saying I distrust him – but I can’t help wonder why he didn’t make the effort to go and see Toby himself when he knew she was alive – he kept sending messages.  I know, I know, he shouldn’t have to run his own errands – but even so.

Do you remember the whole scene in LoTR where Frodo and Sam first meet Strider and Sam says something along the line of trusting him because he looks foul but feels fair – well, it kind of makes me think… maybe sometimes things look fair but feel foul.

That being said, I liked Sylvester.  Okay, I’m just going to go away and debate  (argue with myself) some more.

2. I’m totally intrigued by the Hope Chest – do you have any ideas about what exactly it is and what might be the significance of it being found?

Well, I have a notion that it somehow increases the magical abilities of the changelings – which is why they’re drawn to it like iron filings to a magnet.  Now, the only reason I thought that is because Toby seemed of a sudden to be able to conjure things more easily, for example, her human appearance or her fancy pants dress when she appeared in Sylvester’s court.  That could of course be a complete clanger but I thought I’d chuck it out there.  You can see why the fae would want to keep it hidden as it certainly would tip the balances a little.  So, not to enjoy my own idea too much – I was then, on the other hand thinking of the name – A Hope Chest – is this a play on words or is this chest genuinely going to give hope to those that find it.  Can’t wait to find out.

3. Tybalt – I was curious as to Toby’s reasoning to trust him with the Hope Chest – what do you think?

I guess it goes back to the Strider/Frodo scenario above.  Can you really trust Tybalt.  Is he foul or fair?  I actually think you can.  I’m not sure that I totally agree with Toby’s reasoning.  But, maybe underneath it all she trusts Tybalt more than she wants to admit.  After all there’s a fine line between love and hate and these two do seem to be getting in each other’s faces so far.  Plus, there was that whole ‘rescuing Toby from the coming dawn scene’!  *waggles eyebrows* – come on, he could have just left her to it methinks!

4. We experience the reaction of other members of the fae to the murder of Evening and Toby telling them about the Queen’s reactions – did their reactions give you any clues at all??

Yes, they did – but now I’ve forgotten in what way!  Well, not totally (but why oh why don’t I make some notes occasionally!).  Okay, it was interesting that everyone seemed to be puzzled by the Queen’s reactions to Evening’s murder.  It seems to be genuinely felt that maybe she’s going a little crazy.  Personally, it feels like she’s almost afraid – that could be totally off kilter but she feels like the ostrich with her head in the sand at the moment.  She has her hands over her ears and is singing ‘lalalalalalal’ to stop from hearing anything.  Which just makes me puzzled.  She’s powerful isn’t she.  Surely she wants to know who murdered Evening – unless she does know and is scared.  Why, oh why, am I making all these highfalutin guesses!  Simply to give you all a giggle.

5. What were your thoughts on Raysel and Luna?

You know – my immediate feelings with the whole ‘gone missing’ episode was that ‘how do we know they’re really who they’re supposed to be’ (arrggghh, stop with the guesses – stop, stop, stop!)  After all – I can’t stop – fairies are always swapping fae for humans – what if they also swap fae for fae!  IT COULD HAPPEN.  Failing that, I guess they’re both traumatised by their ordeal (completely understandable).  Luna feels a little withdrawn – Raysel, well, what can you say.  Maniac, maybe?  Too strong??  I wouldn’t want to meet her alone in a dark alley – that is all.  Plus there’s this whole element of blaming Toby – she didn’t abduct them did she.  She didn’t find them either but she wasn’t responsible for the fact they went missing, plus, her investigation was a bit hampered by the lack of a body and the addition of gills and fins.

6. That ending, did we just end up back in the first post? – what is going on? Speculation?? Lets just talk about it please.

I couldn’t believe it!  I mean, obviously it’s not totally a deja vu to the prologue because Toby isn’t turned into a fish!  Bear in mind that I haven’t read on here at all so I’m just going to say that I have no idea.  Why was somebody in her car – and that did give me the goosebumps , I’ve got them again now just thinking about it – part of me wondered if he just really wanted to talk to her – and then I thought, yeah, maybe breaking into somebody’s car wouldn’t be the best way to go about doing that – plus, surely he had a chance to garble something during Toby’s high speed car drama.  I’m genuinely puzzled over all of it and for once have no fantastical flights of fantasy floating round my noggin.

I must admit I really enjoyed these chapters though and can’t wait to read everyone’s thoughts 😀
