#SPFBO X : My Second Batch of Books

SPFBOX

SPFBO X is now underway and the books allocated.  I’ve divided my books into three sets of five.  Hopefully tackling one batch of five per month for the next three months.

For those who don’t know about SPFBO (the Self Published Fantasy Blog Off) – this is a competition created and run by Mark Lawrence.  The competition is now in its tenth year and you can find more about all the other entrants and judges over on Mark Lawrence’s blog.  This year I am again teaming up with the Critiquing Chemist.

This year I am planning on reading the first 25% (or for those larger books the first 100 pages) of all the books in my allocation.  This way I will quickly gain an idea of the books that I want to continue to read.

I’ve managed to read the first 25% of my first batch of books.  At the moment I haven’t made any firm decisions, I am planning to read  further with a couple of titles at least before posting an update.

Without further ado let’s take a look at my second batch of books.

A Song to Wake A Thousand Sorrows by Michelle Manus

ASTWATS

A woman with unimaginable power. A king hellbent on ruling the world. An ancient force that could mean salvation or destruction.

The survivor of a brutal childhood, Clare Brighton craves the kind of wealth and notoriety that will mean the horrors of her past can never again touch her. With nothing but a battered guitar and a Songweaver’s talent, she comes to the capital of the Faelhorn Provinces, determined to gain her place.

But there is another, more dangerous power that dwells within Clare. An entity she calls the Song, it is ancient and fathomless…and no longer content to be held in the cage she has trapped it in. It is a power the ruthless Jackal King has long been searching for, and should he discover she possesses it, the cost will be far greater than her life.

Clare has sworn that she will never again let anyone control her. But escaping the Jackal King’s notice will require the one thing she never wanted to help. It will come first from the two lords who have taken her under their wing. Next from the second prince of Faelhorn, who Clare alone knows is not what he seems. And finally, from the Song itself.

The Song has the strength to save her—if it doesn’t destroy her first.

Changeling

Fey go missing in the mortal realm. Everyone knows that.

When Lizzy’s mother is the next to vanish she’s expected to grieve and move on. Instead, Lizzy wants to find out what happened, but the answers she seeks can’t be found in the fey realm of Arbaon.

With the help of her best friend, Booker Reed, Lizzy’s determined to retrace her mother’s final steps… straight through an illegal portal and into the mortal realm.

Whatever leads she expected to find, it wasn’t an academy of vampires, and a world stalked by their rabid cousins—the kavians.

Forced to rely on the vampires for protection, and secluded away behind the high walls of Speculo School, it quickly becomes clear not everyone is pleased with Lizzy and Booker’s investigation. With danger building the further they dig, the two fey need to decide if the closure they seek is worth risking their lives for.

But the longer they remain amongst the vampires, the more Lizzy suspects that her answers lie with the deadly kavians instead.

Touched by Magic by Celine Jeanjean

TBM

I’m Apiya. No, I’m not a badass magical assassin. I’m a barber to the supernatural.

My magic is very weak and very niche—it works best with keeping things clean.
I know. I can sense your awe at my power already. And I’m sure you can see why barbering suits me well.

Although now that I’ve mastered the art of trimming a weretiger’s regrowth, my biggest challenge is fielding the insults of the shop’s cat. Sometimes I wish I had enough magic to go deeper into the city’s magical underbelly.

You know what they say—be careful what you wish for.

Everything changes when a pair of forest fae come into the shop one night, asking for help to protect their youngling. Something’s got them properly spooked, but they won’t say what.

If it’s big and bad enough to scare the fae, it’s most definitely powerful enough to make a mouthful of me—probably a small mouthful, at that. And now that the fae have come to me, whatever’s after them is also after me.

My weak magic and a sarcastic cat for backup are unlikely to be enough to keep me alive and save the fae youngling.

There is someone who’s willing to help me—Sarroch. Arrogant, unpleasant, wealthy, and I don’t even know what kind of magical creature he is beneath his human form. Or what his motives are in offering to help.

I have no idea if I can trust him, but I’m so short on allies, I might not have a choice. I just hope I’m not making a huge mistake…

Grab Touched by Magic to see if I make it. Oh, and don’t get offended if the cat insults you…

#SPFBO 8 Second Batch of Books: Feedback

SPFBO71024_1

What is SPFBO? Check out Mark Lawrence’s post here to look at this year’s entrants, judges and allocations list.

I am teaming up again with the ladies from The Critiquing Chemist.

Today’s post is about giving feedback on the second batch of SPFBO books I picked up.  I have fifteen books altogether and I’ve tried out a different process this year.  I had three batches of randomly chosen books equalling five books a month for the first three months.   As previously mentioned I will be giving every book in my batch a fair chance and in fact I’ve read at least 30% (and more often than that more) of each book.  Having  partially read all 15 books I’m now in a position to start to make cuts and choose which books I will be fully reading before choosing a semi finalist. I will provide a short review of my initial thoughts for the books that I have to say goodbye to – always the saddest part of the competition which is why I find myself delaying the inevitable.  Before the end of September I will post two further updates with further cuts.  At this point, and to be clear, the books I’m rolling forward at this stage are not Semi Finalists but are in the running to become so. I aim to complete all my potential SFs by the end of September at which point I hope to select one or two books as Semi Finalists for the Critiquing Chemist to read (and they will do likewise) – we will then decide on our Finalist.

Without further ado:

Candle and Claw by Stephen James Taylor

HIGH RES Cover

Giovel Ullin’s job is to stop witches from crafting experimental magic and destroying the world. It’s a job he never wanted. Every time he hunts a witch, he’s reminded of the ones who stole his wife away and sent her back distant, delusional, and dying. Even worse, the same magic that ruined her life is now part of his-a tool Giovel’s expected to master for the sake of his duties.

When a coterie of witches begins systematically removing Giovel’s companions, he has little choice but to fight back. But the more he learns about his own power, the more he sees himself in the very witches he hunts.

Candle and Claw is the first volume in The Witherclaw Trilogy. Packed with hard magic, nuanced characters, and epic conflicts, Candle and Claw will appeal to fans of Brent Weeks and Brandon Sanderson.

My thoughts:

I found Candle and Claw interesting to the point I read up to – which was roughly a third. This is a story set in a world full of strife and magic.  War is a constant, temporarily held at bay by inclement weather alone.  Magic exists, fueled by a Sun and magical glyphs, anyone can wield magic although it needs to awaken. When magic awakens In a person they must report their newfound abilities to the Order.  Those that fail to do so are sought out by Mages before they cause havoc.  Meanwhile, across the country ‘spiritings’ take place – the reason behind which is yet to be discovered.  People simply disappear and if/when they reappear they are altered or die.

Giovel’s wife was spirited away – The Order believe that witches are the cause – and subsequently passed away.  Now, part of the Order, he seeks the witches responsible for his wife’s death.

Varan appears mysteriously, apparently spirited away herself.  She is under the protection of the Order until they can find out more about her mystery.  She is powerful with magic and thus the witches will seek her out.

Claravena is a witch – ambitious and a bit reckless.

There are more characters but these are the ones that stood out.

I enjoyed this, it reads well, I particularly liked the opening snippets that started each chapter and I can see that these storylines are going to come together well.  That being said, at this point,I hadn’t developed any strong attachments, although Varan seemed to be the voice of reason.  The Order all seem to be at loggerheads with each other, which, while I’m sure is all part of the grand design, is slightly annoying nonetheless.  I think I wanted a slight spattering of lightness here and there which felt lacking at this point.

Slight issues aside this gets off to a good start. It felt similar in some respects to other novels but I think it stands on its own merit.

Conclusion: Cut

The Lich of Thandorien by Zak Dragon

heLich

Old high school classmates and current drinking buddies, Phil and Don find themselves transported into a Crypts & Crusades role-playing adventure they had abandoned five years earlier. If that wasn’t bad enough, it seems that some of the non-player characters, or Extra Dungeon Personalities (EDPs) as they now prefer to be called, have taken on a life of their own during the extended downtime and have veered away from the normal script. Fortunately for the daring duo, there is plenty of beer and they manage to get a little help along the way from an inquisitive but emotional ranger, a home-brewing, pub-owning dwarf and his ogre bartender, a grumpy old gardener and a host of other colorful characters. But will it be enough to defeat the crypt’s antagonist, locate a powerful relic and get out alive?

My thoughts:

This is a book that falls into litRPG.  Two men find themselves transported into an old D&D style game that they played previously but lost interest in a few years prior.  As the book begins we meet Phil and Don, they wake up in their own places  of residence, suffering hangovers, to discover outside their front doors a totally different landscape.  Eventually, the two realise that they’ve been pulled back into their old game although some of the rules seem to have changed.  Basically, Phil and Don fairly quickly figure out that they need to complete the game in order to return to their normal lives – however, things have become more complicated during their absence and some of the rules have changed.

This is an easy to engage with story with a fun feel.  The two characters, as would be expected, soon discover that they can pick up artefacts along the way and use certain characters that are positioned in order to engage players and provide information.  Within short order they’ve found a bar – because, beer – and asked another character to join their quest.  I read up to about 37% or thereabouts, by which time the two characters had been given the heads up about a number of issues by their new teammate and a gardener who seems to live next door to them.

So, as I mentioned this was certainly very easy to read by the point I broke off, but, to be fair to the author I’m not a gamer and litRPG wouldn’t be my first choice of book to pick up.  Some of the references probably just go over my head and I find quite often that the plot involves info dumps in order, no doubt, to bring non players like myself up to speed.

I certainly wouldn’t discourage anyone from reading this one even if it’s not the perfect fit for me.

The Blood of Crows by Alex C Pierce

Bloodof

Ren, a state-trained thief working in a world where everyone has magical ability except for him, doesn’t kill people.

Tensions are already high in the walled realm of Lenmar, and when the nobility start dying with no trace of magic that isn’t from the victims, Ren immediately becomes the prime, and only suspect. Hunted by magic-eating Inquisitors and the Captain of the Royal Guard, his life becomes one of flight and fear through a realm on the brink of civil war.

All Ren wants to do is stop a serial killer, clear his name, find his mentor, and protect the people he cares about.

To do that, he’ll have to pull one more high-stakes heist— And steal the proof he needs from the very people who want to catch him.

My thoughts:

I won’t be posting a review for The Blood of Crows today as this is one of the books I’ve decided to continue reading so a review will follow at a later stage.

I won’t be posting a review for Scarlight today as this is one of the books I’ve decided to continue reading so a review will follow at a later stage.

The Fantastically Underwhelming Epic of a Dead Wizard and an Average Bard by Kian N Ardalan

Fantastically

George is a legendary hero… wait, no. George is an incredibly powerful sorcerer…also no? Okay, fine. George is an unremarkable human bard who made a promise a long time ago. A promise that set him on a path to find the remains of Simantiar, the greatest wizard who ever lived. Though all that was left were bones, Simantiar was still very much alive and quite…underwhelming. This is their story.

My thoughts:

This is a story of a young man, a bard known as George.  George is in search of a gate behind which will lie that which he desires the most. In his search he has the assistance of a skeleton, the skull of which can talk. The bones once belonged to a great wizard who for the most part can remember little of his past.  George, being a young man needs help on his quest and also enlists the services of a mercenary.  The three set off on their journey, pursued by a trio of thieves that eventually chase them into the most dangerous part of the Dead Forest.  I won’t go any further into the plot thus far.

I enjoyed my read of the first 30% of the story.  The pacing is good, there is plenty going on with skirmishes and all sorts of undesirables (the robbers being the least of the problem).  I really liked that the author provides flashbacks for his main characters as this helps the reader to build a better picture of their personalities and motivations and I also can’t help but feel that these flashbacks are eventually going to reveal something huge, particularly in terms of the wizard maybe.

If this continues in its current vein I would definitely say this is a very character focused story, which is something that I enjoy.  I think the author is making good inroads into developing his cast whilst keeping the pace very punchy.  The downside for me is that I have very little understanding of the world in which the story takes place – again though, this statement comes with the proviso that I’ve not read the entire story.

Overall this is an entertaining tale and an epic quest into dangers unknown.  It felt a little young for my own personal taste but time allowing I would like to pick this one up again to see how the adventure eventually concludes.

Again, my thanks to the authors for submitting their beloved books.  There wouldn’t be a competition without you and I really appreciate that you took such a huge leap.

#SPFBO : My Second Batch of Books – Update

SPFBO71024_1

Today I’m posting an update for my second batch of SPFBO books (which can be found here).  This year I’m teaming up with the lovely ladies from the Critiquing Chemist and we split the batch of books equally – which gives me a little more time this year.

This month I read and reviewed all four books from my second batch and today I’m providing my feedback on which books will be cut or rolled forward.  At this point I’m not making any decisions on semi-finalists as the semi finalists will be decided by both blogs before agreement on a finalist is reached. We will each put forward hopefuls and then take it from there.

I would mention that this is ultimately the most difficult part of the competition for judges and authors.  I don’t find making cuts easy to be honest however it’s the nature of the competition.  There can be only one. I would also like to thank the authors of the books that are highlighted today for taking the decision to throw their hat into the ring.  It can’t be easy and I definitely applaud you for taking this step.

Without further ado here is my feedback from the second batch of books:

Berserker (Apocosmos #1) by Dimitrios Gkirgkiris

Berserker

Alex is a game developer though he’d much rather stream RPG classics or spend time with Louie. That’s his  adorable corgi. He also hates people.  Not in a homicidal way but rather in an extremely-antisocial one.Unless you hurt Louie.

In such an instant, Alex is pulled in the Apocosmos, where our whole world is just a blip in a colorful tapestry of million others. A multiverse ruled by a strict system. Where Norse, Greek, and Celtic pantheons clash. Where dwarves craft, dragons hoard, and vampires don’t glitter. A world that is as cruel as epic.

Alex wants none of that though. He just wants to earn an early retirement somewhere in Spain. There’s money to be made in the Apocosmos. Alex will take advantage of the market just like he did in his MMORPG days, in what seems like an error-proof plan. But it’s a zero-sum game and some would do anything to eliminate competition.

My review is here.

In a nutshell, I had fun with Berserker, it was an enjoyable read that I had a few issues with but nothing that really spoiled the read.  If you like litRPG this could be your next read, I would certainly be interested to see what happens in the next instalment.

Stone Magus (Hidden Gems Saga #1) by Stephanie C. Marks

SM

In life, love, and family, there is always strength in numbers.

Something is off balance between the Windsong Sisters, and for Opal and Ruby, the terrible might of their powers may just lead them to catastrophe—or clarity. As half-elf mages in the service of the Order of Aiuna, the sisters spend their days collecting and preserving anything that magic touches, and as their mission takes them further back into their past, the darkness that awaits them there threatens to destroy everything they hold dear.

Despite the dark smoke rising around them, Opal is finding it hard to ignore the flames flickering between herself and Baerdun. There’s just something about it that makes her feel weak, and not just in the knees. With so much happening around them, it’s becoming much harder to keep her head above water and her heart her own.

After everything they’ve lost—what if they lose themselves as well?

Enter a world where shadows exist within and without, and follow Opal, Ruby, and Baerdun down a path that will either bring them together or force them apart.

My review is here.

In a nutshell, this is fantasy and romance combined.  It has a very unusual and unique concept and was easy to get along with.  I think readers of romance who like a fantasy setting may enjoy this one – warning: it does become a little ‘steamy’ as the storyline progresses.

Book of Secrets (Merged Series #1) by Claudia Blood

BoS

Joshua Lighthouse never wanted to save the world, but now he has no choice.

Three hundred years ago, the human world and the world of Myth underwent a cataclysmic Merge. Those who survived – both human and Others – formed factions. Joshua led one faction, the Human Protection Agency, which is charged with maintaining the safety of the humans in his city. He secretly protects an artifact more powerful than even he knows…

My review is here.

In a nutshell, urban fantasy that manages to deliver a unique idea in terms of the Merge.  It felt a little rushed in parts that made it difficult to connect to the central characters but for UF lovers this could be the start of an interesting series.

Dragonbirth byRaina Nightingale

Dragonbirth

In a world where dragons are considered demons and Dragonriders are hunted and killed as witches…

A devout village-girl, Silmavalien, meets a dragon hatchling and discovers a love she could never have dreamed. At the same time, her world is ripped apart as she discovers the gods she has worshipped and everything she has ever been taught or believed is a monstrous lie. Not knowing what to believe – or even if she can trust her engaged, Noren, with her new secret – she must find a way to care for herself and her dragon, Minth, in a wild and hostile world, a world which only grows stranger as the days pass.

My review is here.

In a nutshell this reads like a coming of age story about a young girl who bonds with a baby dragon and must then leave behind everything and everyone she knows in order to keep them both alive.  The writing didn’t quite work for me with this one and the repetition prevented me from connecting to the characters as much as I would have liked.  There are plenty of dragons though and maybe this is aimed more at a MG audience.

Conclusion : cut

My thanks again to the authors.

I will be posting my third batch of books very soon.

#SPFBO 7 : My Second Batch of Books

SPFBO71024_1

SPFBO 7 got off to a great start.  I’ve read my first batch of books – you can find my feedback here plus links to reviews for all four books.  I have to say my first batch was very good and has set the bar high.  Let’s see what comes next – I’m hoping for lots of good reads.

For those of you unfamiliar with SPFBO here and here are two posts that might provide some enlightenment.  Basically, SPFBO is the Self Published Fantasy Blog Off, brainchild of Mark Lawrence.  300 hopeful authors submit their word babies.  10 Judges are allocated 30 books each.  Each judge chooses a finalist, the competition narrows to 10 hopeful candidates.  Alas, there can be only one winner so following an intense reading session where all the judges read and score each others finalists a winner finally emerges.

The main change for myself this year is that I am joining up with the wonderful Critiquing Chemist and her lovely boffin.  We are very excited to start reading our batch (at the moment equally divided between the two blogs).  I love this part of the competition, it’s full of expectations and hope.  As in previous years  I will give a brief introduction to the books and authors that I’m picking up that month together with an update at the end of the month where I may roll some books forwards and cut others.  I know!  It’s a part of the competition that I’m not overly fond of but it is unavoidable.  Personally, I like to think that as the competition begins we already have 300 winners who each took that bold step to throw their hat into the ring and join in.  So, enjoy yourselves, take the opportunity to make friends and become part of the community.

This month the four books that I will be reading from me second batch are:

#SPFBO : My Second Batch of Books – Update

Artboard 1

The 1st of June marked the start of the sixth Self Published Fantasy Blog Off (details here.)  My Introductory post is here.  My first batch of books post is here and my first update is here.  My post outlining my second batch of books can be found here and today’s post provides my update for that batch.

The aim of these updates is to provide feedback on each batch of books.  I aim to read at least 30% of all my books and then make a decision whether to roll any books forward from that batch.  Any books that I decide to roll forward I will continue reading and provide a review and a decision about whether that book will be a semi finalist.  I will provide mini reviews for the books that are being cut.  I will not rate these books as I think it will be difficult to do so having only read the first third of the book.

Below are the books from the second batch and my decision about which will be cut or rolled forward.  I realise this is really difficult for all the authors and so I want to state plainly that I don’t find these cuts easy to make or enjoyable.  However, I do have to make cuts.  I can have only one finalist by the conclusion of the first half of the competition and so 29 books will eventually be removed.

Burn (Desert Deities, #1) by G. E. Hathaway

Burn ecover - G.E. Hathaway - Vickie L. H.

Burn is a book that I was really curious about and to the point that I read up to was a very engaging read.  Set in Tucson this has a post apocalyptic feel.  The world became over reliant on modern technology and so when everything crashed life became almost impossible.  I must say this gets off to a very good start and pacing certainly isn’t an issue.

We meet a few characters who become entangled in helping an unusual woman who has strange abilities and who is being followed or chased by another very powerful character.  Liam, Noah and Ellie are the main characters and the unusual woman and man that they are helping/running from are the deities referred to in the book’s description.

At the point I read up to I found this intriguing and easy.  I had a few minor issues but nothing that spoiled my enjoyment and I would be interested in returning to this book to complete at a later stage.

Conclusion : Cut

Ranger’s Oath (Arc of Radiance/Fall of Radiance #1) by Blake Arthur Peel

Unfortunately Ranger’s Oath has been withdrawn from the competition so I will not be providing a review at this point.

Knightmare Arcanist (Frith Chronicles #1) by Shami Stovall

Knightmare

At the point I read up to I really enjoyed this one and so I’m rolling it forward and will provide a review at a later stage when I will also make a decision about whether or not this will be a semi-finalist.

The Edge of Nothing (The Lex Chronicles #1) by Crystal Crawford

Edgeof

The Edge of Nothing is a book that gets off to a very quick start with the introduction of Lex who seems to be being held captive although he has no idea why.  Lex manages to escape and makes the acquaintance of a young woman.  The two immediately encounter some very unusual events and this coupled with the fact that Lex seems to have no memory of who he is or where he is, coupled with the fact that he is experiencing strange visions does make for a slightly perplexing start.  I have mixed feelings about this book.  I thought the writing was easy enough to get along with but at my cut off point I hadn’t really been able to fully engage with the characters or story.  Partly, this is a result of the author maintaining the mystery of what is actually going on here and I recognise that reading further would probably start to uncover answers, unfortunately, at the point I read up to I find that the Edge of Nothing isn’t quite working out for me.

I have deferred reading Mid-Lich Crisis to a later batch as I will be picking up the audio version which will be available shortly so no review at this point.

Chains of Blood (The Chaos Cycle #1) by M.L. Spencer

Chains

This is another book that really does hit the ground running.  As the book begins we meet Rylan Marshall, a soldier returning home.  As he walks home he is viciously attacked, he discovers his son has been murdered, his daughter abducted and himself in the strange position of having magical power forced upon him and also being forced to make a dark oath that really bodes very ill.

In fairly short order we discover that Rylan isn’t quite who he thought.  He’s the son of a demon, a man hated by many but also believed a hero by others – all depending on which side of the fence you’re sitting.

At my cut off point things were really hotting up, war seemed imminent and Rylan had already had a couple of attempts on his life.

This is another of my books that I would like to return to if time allows but at this point I’m rather reluctantly setting it to one side.
