This Friday I’m reading : The Curious Affair of the Somnambulist & the Psychic Thief (The Curious Affair Of #1) by Lisa Tuttle
I admit that I did not plan my escape very well, but the fact is that I had not planned it at all.
It was the end of June, 1893, and I had been in Scotland for barely two weeks, a guest in a grand (if somewhat ominous, chilly, and underpopulated country house where I had intended to remain for at least another month, along with my friend Miss Gabrielle Fox. Or, rather, my erstwhile friend. The thought of Gabrielle, who must by now have discovered by defection, made my stomach plunge, and I felt ill with nerves and unhappiness as I sat, shut in alone in my sleeping compartment while the night express rocked and swayed and rattled through the border country. I could ill afford the extra five shillings for a private compartment, but I had paid, because that is what a lady must do. Even though I did not expect to be able to sleep, I lacked the energy to remain as alert and vigilant as one must be in a third-class carriage against importunate strangers.
Gabrielle Fox, known to readers who follow the reports published by the Society for Psychical Research as ‘Miss X,’ had been my closest companion for nearly four years. although she had originally been my employer, by the time economic difficulties forced an end to that arrangement, a sympathetic understanding had developed, and our relationship became a partnership in which we shared work and its rewards equally. When she was hired by the SPR to conduct investigations into various types of supernatural phenomena or to test the claims made by mediums and spiritualists of all kinds, I went as her assistant and wrote up our findings for publication.
Then Miss Fox was put in charge of an official SPR investigation into a haunted house in Perthshire. Instead of being part of a larger team, she had absolute authority to decide how to conduct the affair, when or if to bring in experts (and of what sort), and told expense was no obstacle. The house was turned over to us – the owner had gone abroad, leaving a small staff to manage the upkeep at our direction, a coach and horses also at our disposal.
My First Impressions
It all sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? And, yes, a huge ‘but’ is obviously looming – otherwise why would our protagonist be scarpering off on a train in the middle of the night, running away from something by the sounds of it. I like the style of writing, insofar as I can make a judgement from such a small snippet and I’m very keen to read on.

Have you ever had a deep-seated feeling that the world is out to get you?
And I don’t mean for doing something where you might actually deserve it: I mean the kind that happens despite your best intentions to be a good person, turn over a new leaf, and potentially make up for a possible – though clearly not intentional – slight you may have done others…
And even though you may be doing your damnedest to fix things, including crossing the globe twice in the last month, you could feel that the universe still decided it was going to tell you that you could royally fuck off?
You know, that kind of “out to get you” feeling?
Because from this side of the backpacker hostel picnic table, sitting across from my Nepal contact, Dev, that was pretty much the vibe I was getting. To be honest, it was the vibe I’d been getting all month, like gum getting tangled in your hair.
My First Impressions
I think that beginning is a perfect start for the book and a great reflection of the series as well. You can tell already, even from those first few lines, that things are going to go horribly wrong.

Hi T.
No easy way to say this, but I’m going back to Tibet. Yeah. Back to the mountain, though I swore I never would, remember? Leave for Heathrow in 5. How’s that for casually dropping a bombshell? I’ve tried everything else, T, and going back is the only way. Got to the point where it’s this or a padded cell.
If I don’t make it home, there’s a dropbox file you should check out. Sounds ominous, I know, like I’ve gone full B-movie: If you’re reading this then I’m already dead…. Password is ‘fingersinyrheart06’. Anyway, read it. Or not. Up to you. Do whatever you want with it. Just needed to tell the truth. Put the record straight, you know?
Farewell and adieu, mate.
Aka
So long, and thanks for all the fish. Si
My First Impressions
Wow, what an excellent start. Yes, I was anxious to read on. I’ve read Sarah Lotz before and she’s very good. This book just really appealed to me and the start really struck a chord. I like books that start like this I must admit. And, yes, I’ve read on – I can barely put this down and even when I do it’s still on my mind.

Tasha eyed the stone causeway that connected the mainland to the city of Vietor. Night was fast approaching. The street lamps were lit and the watch would soon shut the city gates for the evening. He bent forward and vigorously brushed the sand from his long, matted hair, then wiped the grit from his eyes with the tattered sleeve of his robe. A month in the wastelands had left him with sand in places it had no right to be. With luck he had enough money for a room and a bath, and maybe a new pair of boots, but first he had to make the city. Maybe five minutes to cross the bridge, another five to the city gates; he could just make it if he hurried.
He was less than halfway across when he saw the soldiers make their way onto the causeway. A mounted warrior, a Daesho in red lacquered armour, led a line of spearmen spread out across the width of the crossing, arms at the ready as they advanced. A palanquin and its bearers trailed behind, a minor lord, if the only twenty or so retainers were any indication.
Tasha knew he should retreat. Just turn around and clear the bridge until after the procession had passed. The arrogant bastards meant to clear the way, allowing no one to pass until they’d made the far side.
What was one more night spent out of doors? He closed his eyes and shuddered at the thought of the thin sleeping roll slung at his hip. There was still one last bit of dried horsemeat left in his food pouch. He could make do.
My First Impressions
But, does he want to ‘make do’? That is the question. I thought this was a good opening and I was keen to find out more about Tasha and what action he would take. What do you think – did he turn back? Or not??

It was an age of miracles. It was an era of wonder. It was a time of new frontiers.
In the twenty-first century, humankind gradually came to the realisation that its home world – crust depleted of nearly all usable resources, ice caps melted and coastal cities flooded skies tinted a sickly reddish-orange hue at sunset from overdepenence upon fossil fuels – could no longer support everyone, and therefore long-term survival lay in the colonisations of space. Because the stars were too far away (at least for the time being) this left the other worlds of the solar system as the only places to go.
Gradually, tentatively, with small and reluctant baby steps that soon became a confident pace and finally a headlong sprint, the human race left Earth and went out in the void, exploring worlds previously visited only by unmanned rovers and flyby probes, transforming them into humanity’s new home.
My First Impressions
I confess that as I started reading the first few chapters I couldn’t help but imagine that voice over that used to accompany sci fi series from way back when. “space, the final frontier, to boldly go where no man has gone before”- that sort of voice over. So, yes, I’m loving the retro feel of this and I’m looking forward to reading on.
