Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme created by Books by Proxy . This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers. The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme (list below) choose a book (this doesn’t have to be a book that you’ve read), compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite. Future’s themes are listed below – if you have a cover in mind that you’re really wanting to share then feel free to leave a comment about a future suggested theme. I’ve also listed events that take place during the year, that I’m aware of, so you can link up your covers – if you’re aware of any events that you think I should include then give me a shout.
I’ve added themes in below. For information, I’m trying out some new ideas so along with coming up with particular items for book covers I thought we could also look for certain elements contained within the book or that play a large part in the story – this really broadens things out because I have plenty of more ideas with this – I’ve gone for a few of the Tough Travel Themes (so a book with that theme – just choose any book – the theme isn’t necessarily on the cover, then compare covers), also, I’ve thrown in some genres and some colours. Hopefully this will open things out a little and give us some more freedom to come up with new books.
This week’s theme:
Somewhere over the rainbow – a very colourful book cover
I was very happy to find that the book I’ve chosen this week has more than one cover. this is an author I love. Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. This cover fits the bill totally and so do the alternatives.
My favourite is going to be the original although I like the third cover too.

The most recent book you’ve read that has covers to compare
This week I’ve literally gone for the most recent book that I’ve read which was Last Exit by Max Gladstone. I haven’t reviewed this one yet but the link to Goodreads is here. There are only two covers but here they are:
So, I quite like both of these and I think on first impression I would automatically choose the first but then, having had a good look at the second cover I really like some of the extra details like the car is driving on the hard shoulder, the lightning and the turbulent sky.
Mmm, decisions, decisions. I think, having gone back and forth, my first impressions are still good. I’m going with the cover I’m most familiar with:

Genre : Gadgets and airships – a book that is ’steampunk
So, I’ve had a strange few days. Basically, came home a couple of days ago and my dog, who gets very excited, kind of charged at me (and he’s such a clumsy goofball – he didn’t stop in time) and his big old bullet head rammed my arm. Wow, did that hurt. Just a bit. Anyway, I left it for a few hours, took pain killers, tried to carry on as normal with lots of facial wincing and eventually decided I needed to go to hospital. Long story short. Nothing is broken – and thank goodness for that. But it is very sore and so I’m doing everything quite literally single handed at the moment. There you go – that’s my story for this week. Hope you’re all well and sorry for the delay with the Face Off.
This week I’ve gone for a book I read a few years ago and loved. The Mechanical by Ian Tregellis (#1 of The Alchemy War Series.

Not a lot of coves to choose from and seeing them together the original one does stand out the most. I do like the mechanical heart though so here it is enlarged a little so you can see the detail:

Tough Travel Tropes : Made for each other
Firstly, apologies for not blog hopping. I don’t know why I’m so far behind this week but I am aiming to catch up with everyone later today. Anyway, today’s theme, I actually had lots of ideas for this one but I’ve gone for a book that I really enjoyed and that, feels perfect for this week’s theme if you take it literally. The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey is a futuristic book that looks at genetic cloning and the lengths that some people will go to to get things right! Here are the covers:
I quite like a few of the ideas here although there are little things that just niggle me somehow. I like the second cover with the black background and two rings – the second ring is not quite a perfect imitation if you look closely and I really like that idea but I’m not keen on the way the title is echoed – although I understand the reasoning. I also quite like the black and red cover. It gives me vibes of an illusion where you look at a picture and see a ‘vase’ (for example) but then when you look more closely it’s maybe something else like the outline of two faces. Again, I like the idea but think the execution overall just needs something else. I’ve instead gone for the cover which represents perfect suburbia with two women relaxing in the garden with the garden hedge in the background – don’t ask me why this appeals to me, something about being behind your garden hedge, secluded, everything looking perfect but the reality is there’s lots going on.

Tough Travel Tropes : Hate to Love
This week’s theme is one of my prompts to push The Friday Face Off into new ground. So, we have the themes where we’re looking for something on the cover – the TTT are more about the content of a particular book. Therefore, find a book that you love (or not) that has the Hate to Love trope within and compare the covers for that book. Hopefully easy enough?? And, I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.
I have to say that I had a few books for this week’s theme but I’ve gone for a book that I loved. Very different and forward thinking. My review is here. This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone. A futuristic story with two opposing agents. Lets look at the covers:
