Waiting on Wednesday: Game of Shadows by Erika Lewis

“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly meme created by Breaking the Spine.  Every Wednesday we get to highlight a book that we’re really looking forward to.  My book this week is :  Game of Shadows by Erika Lewis:

game-ofEthan Makkai thought that seeing ghosts was the worst of his problems. Between his ethereal gift and life with a single mother hell-bent on watching his every move, he feels imprisoned. When Ethan sees a chance to escape, to leave the house by himself for the first time in his life, he seizes it, unaware that this first taste of freedom will cost him everything.

Ethan is thrown into a strange and eerie world, like nothing he’s ever seen. He’s assaulted by dive-bombing birds and rescued by a stranger who claims to be his bodyguard. His apartment is trashed, and his mother is kidnapped to a place Ethan never knew existed—a hidden continent called Tara.

Travelling to Tara in search of his mother, Ethan discovers that everything he knows about his life is a lie. His mother is royalty. His father is not dead. His destiny is likely to get him killed.

Confronted by a vicious sorcerer determined to destroy the Makkai family, Ethan must garner strength from his gift and embrace his destiny if he’s going to save his mother and all the people of Tara, including the beautiful girl he’s fallen for.

Due out February 28th 2017 so not a long wait for this one.

All good things to those who wait…

Every Tuesday over at the  The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic.  This week’s topic is:

Top 10 new releases Books I Bought in 2016 and Meant To Read But Didn’t Get To (But TOTALLY plan to)

  1. Tower of Thorns by Juliet Marilier.  This is the second instalment of her Blackthorn and Grim series that started with Dreamer’s Pool – a book that I absolutely loved.  I bought the second book virtually immediately but as with most of my own books it has taken a back seat to review books.  As it happens I now also have a copy of Den of Wolves so hopefully I will get to these two soon – I know that I will love them.
  1. V E Schwab is an author that I haven’t yet read and so last year I picked up a copy of A Darker Shade of Magic and Savage Song – any recommendations as to which one I should pick up first???
  1. Patricia Briggs Fire Touched.  I simply can’t believe that I’ve not started this one yet.  I love this series and the main character Mercy Thompson.
  1. Beyond Redemption by Michael R Fletcher.  I really am very keen to get to this.  It had such great reviews from people who I trust to steer me onto the path of excellent reads!
  1. Wake of Vultures and Conspiracy of Ravens by Lila Bowen – I bought both of these – that’s how confident I am that I’m going to love them.
  1. Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo – I loved the first in series so I’m really looking forward to picking this up.
  1. Senlin Ascends and Arm of the Sphinx (yes, I bought book 1 and 2 of the books of Babel by Josiah Bancroft – another excellent recommendation and two books that I’m really eager to read – they’re receiving positively glowing reviews!
  1. The Marie Brennan series that revolves all around Lady Trent – I bought In the Labyrinth of Drakes early last year so really need to prioritise this one.
  1. The Hunt by Chuck Wendig.  Another book bought early 2016.  I loved Atlanta Burns.  My review here.
  1. The Chrysalids by John Wyndham – I’m bursting to read this book and as it’s Vintage Sci Fi month right now it really is the perfect time so I need to get on with it.

That’s it for me this week – well, I say that’s it – it really isn’t, I have so many books just waiting.  I need to make a dedicated plan to start knocking them off the list.

1) We’ve finally met Snow Tiger!  What do you make of her and her relationship with Moirin?  Does anything stand out in particular?
I like the idea of Snow Tiger having a dragon within!  She’s quite a impressive character in some ways – a warrior, and also to be able to continue given everything that she’s having to deal with.  I found her to be a little haughty at first but I guess that is just natural reservation not to mention her upbringing and standing.  The thing that maybe irritates me slightly with the relationship between the two is the way that Snow Tiger expects Moirin to entertain her and tell her stories – I can’t help wondering if she doesn’t have something to contribute herself!  But overall I think she comes across as quite naive and hopefully this adventure will be good for her in more ways than one.
2) The dragon is a surprising new addition to the cast.  What do you think he’ll do when he is free?  Will he really help in the civil war?
Well, funnily enough, my Chinese sign is the Dragon so I really like him.  I don’t know whether to trust him or not but I’m going to say that I do trust him.  I’m not quite sure why he would help with the war other than to show his own displeasure over what happened to him but thinking on that a little more I think that’s a good enough reason.  I look forward to seeing what he does when he’s free (I have a vision of the genie from Aladdin when he’s released from the lamp and pings around everywhere).  He’s a dragon after all – not a lapdog and I don’t think you can tame a dragon.
3) What do you think of the Path of Dharma, as described by Master Lo Feng?  What path would you prefer to follow?
I don’t know – to be honest, I am what I am.  I’m not sure I could change even if I wanted to – which I don’t particularly.   Sometimes I think it would be nice to be a much calmer person, reasonable, controlled – but it’s in my nature to be a bit more impetuous.
4) Moirin does not seem to mind Bao’s jealousy.  What do you think of their possible future as a couple?
I think they have a great chance as a future couple.  They very much put me in mind of Phedre and Joscelin so whilst I think they will have some obstacles to traverse I think it’s possible.
5) Do you think they acted wisely against Lord Jiang’s men at the temple?  Can you see any other decision they should have taken?
Well, I think their hands were tied really – they were ambushed and this is a war.  They’d be very lucky if there was no bloodshed during a war.  The only thing I did think was that it was a shame there couldn’t have been a little bit more parlay before the slings and arrows began but Lord Jiang’s men did make the first aggressive step.

And here is the current list of participators:

Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day by Seanan McGuire

duskDusk or Dark or Dawn or Day is my latest read by Seanan McGuire and again it is a book that, even thought it’s fairly short, is packed with emotion and characters that you can’t help yourself but warm to.  Basically this is a ghost story but one that is completely different than anything I’ve ever read about before.

The story starts with a funeral.  Patty left her small hometown to find her own fairy tale in New York.  Unfortunately, the dream didn’t pan out and, unable to find happiness Patty took her own life.  Her sister Jenna, struggling to cope with the death of her beloved sister, rushes out into the night and meets with an untimely end!

We then leap forty years forwards.  Patty is living in New York, volunteering at a crisis helpline centre, with a day job serving coffee.  Yes, I said Patty was living.  Well, to be honest, she’s a ghost, but, like the other ghosts that live in the City, she has substance.  Basically, Patty died too soon, in a freak occurrence and like other people who died before their time she has become a ghost and must serve time until she reaches her own ‘time’.

Now, added to this we also have witches. Witches and ghosts have a strange relationship and don’t often become friends – for very good reason.  Witches are alive and kicking and are only too well aware of the benefits they can glean from ghosts.  You see ghosts can knock the years off a person simply by touching them.  As you may imagine this makes ghosts an attractive proposition for people – no more botox or beauty treatments – simply turn back the hands of time and experience the fountain of youth by ensnaring your own personal ghost.

I won’t elaborate on the plot other than to say I love the ideas that McGuire has come up with here and the way she weaves her ideas with superstitions. She seems to be an expert on tugging on heartstrings and this story is, of course, no exception in that respect.

The setting is modern and urban and one that we’re all familiar with except of course for the ‘living dead’ walking amongst us.  This is such an unusual ghost story.  There are no spectres, no shaking chains (although strangely enough I did think of Jacob Marley and his purgatory) and yet I find the thought of the dead walking amongst us, living, working and sharing the same space in complete annonymity – it’s a tiny little bit chilling isn’t it!  But, in a strange twist it seems like the ghosts are more at threat from us than the reverse.

In terms of the characters, well, even though this is a relatively short story it’s very easy to like Jenna and to have a good deal of sympathy towards her.  We have Brenda, who is a corn witch, she shouldn’t be friends with Jenna and yet she is.  Sophia is another witch.  She seems to live rough on the streets and doesn’t always seem coherent but she has quite a fascinating storyline that will be revealed in due course.  Without doubt though, for me, the show stealer was Jenna’s landlady Delia and her pet bird Avocado.  I loved them.

This is going to be a fairly short review, only because I don’t want to give away too much.  This is a book about give and take – it’s not always as simple as it seems, some times  people are very giving and some times people take more than they deserve.  This is a great story, full of imagination and heart and I have no hesitation in recommending it.  Seanan McGuire is certainly becoming one of my go to authors and I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

I received a copy from the publisher courtesy of Netgalley for which my thanks.  The above is my own opinion.

New Year new beginnings.  I’m hoping to do a very quick and short weekly wrap up that will quickly outline what I’ve read and what I’m hoping to read next, plus any other bits and pieces of information.

So, over the past week I’ve read the following books:

Defender by G X Todd – I really enjoyed this.  A post apocalyptic novel – it’s all about the voices inside your head!  Review to follow shortly.

Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day by Seanan McGuire.  Another very good read by Ms McGuire.  Emotionally captivating with ghosts, witches, rats and fields of corn.  Review to follow shortly.

I’m currently reading:

Rosewater by Tade Thompson – I’ve only just started this one so it’s too early to say very much other than an intriguing story apparently about aliens!  Looking forward to reading more.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber – ‘Welcome to Caraval, where nothing is quite what it seems.’ – I can say straight away that I am loving this one.   I’ve read over 150 pages in one sitting already!

Cover compare:

I quite like all three of these but if I had to choose the first is my favourite.

Are you looking forward to any of these books?
