Weekly Update
I’m still moving forward with my reads. I completed MR Carey’s Outlaw Planet this week and I must say that the ending brought a tear to my eyes! I then picked up I’ll Make A Spectacle of You by Beatrice Winifred Iker but I’ve had to set this aside for now as it wasn’t working it’s magic for me, could just be a mood thing and I’ll give it another shot soon. I’ve now picked up The Last Death of the Year by Sophie Hannah. It got off to a decent start so fingers crossed.
Next Week’s reads
Hopefully complete The Last Death of the Year by Sophie Hannah and then I’d like to pick up What Stalks the Deep by T Kingfisher.

Countdown to 2026: Day 21 – Santa’s Snack – a book that was a ‘light read’ between heavier books

Once again I am counting down to the New Year, as with the previous years I shall be highlighting at least one book per day to fit the prompt on that given day. The main aim for this countdown is to highlight some of my reads during the past year and to shine the spotlight on them once again (although some of the prompts relate to forthcoming reads).
Today is Day 21 of the countdown to 2026 and a list of prompts can be found here if you wish to join me in counting down to 2026 and casting a spotlight on some of your favourite books.
Today’s Prompt: Santa’s Snack – a book that was a ‘light read’ between heavier books:
The Enchanted Greenhouse by Sarah Beth Durst. This is a lovely romantasy set in the same world as The Spellshop. I can’t get enough of these stories at the moment. They’re lovely, easy to read and definitely nothing short of cosy. A great read to place between two more prickly stories (a rose between thorns!)

Tomorrow’s prompt: Reindeers – a book with memorable critters

Today I’m posting an alert to bring your attention to the latest book bingo card released by the Bookforager.
The Picture Prompt Book Bingo challenge is a really fun meme created by the Bookforager. I absolutely love taking part in this book bingo and especially finding strange ways of fitting books to certain pictures/prompts. I’ve taken part for the past two years and was excited to see next year’s prompts released (perhaps I need to get out more).
So, without further ado, feast your eyes on the new pictures and the descriptors below:
And the ‘wordy’ version:
Picture Prompt Book Bingo 2026 (text version)
| 1. A teacup and saucer | 2. A set of weighing scales | 3. A moth | 4. A hand holding some fanned out playing cards |
| 5. A hot air balloon | 6. An acorn | 7. A human eye | 8. A cooking pot hanging over a campfire |
| 9. A griffin | 10. A large, old key | 11. A hand holding a threaded needle | 12. An octopus |
| 13. A plant being repotted | 14. A skull and crossbones | 15. A decorative water fountain | 16. A pinch-clip purse |
Doesn’t this look an absolute blast? If you fancy taking part stop on over to Bookforager’s blog and check out the detail here.
You’re welcome.
Now I need to start my evil plotting – by which I mean looking at what books I already have for next year that could possibly fit some of these prompts (cue crazy laughter mwahahahaha!)

Today’s Prompt: Eggnog – a book that was out of your comfort zone:
The Rush by Beth Lewis. I loved this book. I had read the author before to be honest and really enjoyed her work but this novel felt a little out of my normal reading zone, as it is, I couldn’t resist because of her writing and this was brilliant. Sometimes you just have to step out of your comfort zone.

Today I’m returning to the Friday Face Off, originally created by Books by Proxy). I’ve missed these for the past few months and so would like to get back to comparing covers (and hopefully I will be updating this page with a new banner. This is an opportunity to look at a book of your choice and shine the spotlight on the covers. Of course this only works for those books that have alternative covers (although sometimes I use this to look at a series of books to choose a favourite). So, if you have a book that has alternative covers, highlight them and choose your favourite. If you’re taking part it would be great if you leave a link so I can take a look at what you’ve chosen.
This week I’ve chosen a book that I have on my shelves for next year. Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman: Here are the covers:
