Every Tuesday over at The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic. This week’s topic is:
Dads in literature
- Long Suffering: Mr Bennett, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
- Strangest super power: Paul Tsabo from Ferrett Steinmetz’s Mancer series
- Unlikely hero: Roen Tan from Wesley Chu’s Tao series
- Raging Softie: Arthur Weasley from JK Rowlings Harry Potter series
- Most surprising story arc ever: Eddard Stark of GRRMartin’s Game of Thrones
- Vengeful: Prospero from Jacqueline Carey’s Miranda and Caliban
- Monstrous: Michael – Andrew Pyper’s The Only Child
- Worst Dad Ever: Olidan Ancrath, father of Jorg Ancrath, Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence
- Crazy: Jack Torrance – Stephen King’s The Shining
- Your choice??
I agree with your choices of Mr Bennett, Arthur Weasley, and Eddard Stark. I trust you chose the others well because I don’t know them.
Thanks – it was harder to come up with father figures than I imagined – probably not too many dads running around in grimdark and epic fantasy – they’re all too busy fighting battles!
Lynn 😀
Yep, Jack Torrence is definitely crazy. I can’t imagine him even today without thinking of Jack Nicholson.
Jack Nicholson did rather own that role didn’t he!
Lynn 😀
mmmmm, doughnuts.
with sprinkles please..
Poor Ned…. ((sniffle))
🙂
Still cannot get over it…
What a clever list! Prince of Thorns is on my to-read list, and now I’m extra excited!
Thanks – hope you enjoy Prince of Thorns.
Lynn 😀
I’m surprised I haven’t seen MORE Darth Vader this time around. Awesome! Love the Mr. Bennet and Eddard Stark picks… 🙂
I did see one other post with Darth – he was my first thought tbh.
Lynn 😀
Oh yes Michael from The Only Child…I just finished that one! What a monstrous dad…and that whole Electra complex thing Lily had going was even creepier!
Yeah, I actually liked that book more after reflection than I did immediately on reading. Think maybe Pyper should have used a slightly different tack, a more linear story from Michael’s POV – but I suppose it’s easy for me to say that in hindsight.
Lynn 😀
Awesome list, Lynn – particularly agree with your pick of Prospero – nasty piece of work! I don’t know about The Prince of Thorns as I couldn’t get through it. The other one… Silas Marner. I always thought he was lovely…
Oh yes, Silas Marner – great pick.
Lynn 😀
I have Arthur Weasley and Ned Stark on my list too 😀
I was wracking my brains for some Tolkien dads but couldn’t think of any!
Lynn 😀
I went for the mad, bad steward of Gondor, Denethor!
