Every Tuesday over at the  The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic.  The topic this week is :

Ten Books I’ve Added To My To-Be-Read List Lately

scifimonth2016

Given that November is Sci Fi Month (organised by Rinn Reads and Over the Effing Rainbow this is a fun event that celebrates sci fi) I’ve added quite a few sci fi titles to my tbr just recently:

  1. A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers – which I will be picking up in December as part of a readalong group – details on Goodreads.
  2. Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel – I’ve already completed and loved this book – I highly recommend it and my review is here.
  3. Doomsday Book by Connie Willis, Christopher Gibbs I love the sound of this one – recommended to me by Sarah over at Brainfluff
  4. Illuminae: The Illuminae Files: Book 1 (Illuminae Files 1) by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman – this is a book that has such positive reviews that I just can’t resist – next up for my sci fi reading.
  5. The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis – apparently this debut novel is described as perfect ‘for  fans of Station Eleven – see above!
  6. Morning Star: Red Rising Trilogy 3 (The Red Rising Trilogy)by Pierce Brown – I loved the first two books in this series so it’s a bit of a mystery why I haven’t picked this one up yet – I think it may be part of my reluctance to finish series that I’m really enjoying!
  7. Leviathan Wakes: Book 1 of the Expanse by James S A Corey – another book that I’ve heard many many people wax lyrical about – I bought this for last year’s event but didn’t get the time to pick it up so hopefully this year will be the year!
  8. Defenders by Will McIntosh – another book that I’ve owned for quite some time – it could be bumped up the list for the sci fi event – sounds really scary to be honest!
  9. Or, if I want something a bit less scary by the same author Love Minus Eighty – which is currently sat on my wishlist (what to do – I suppose I should read the book I already own really!)

  10. Authority (The Southern Reach Trilogy, Book 2) by Jeff VanderMeer – another scary sci fi – at least the first one was so I’m just gonna make that assumption

Well, seriously, I can’t expect to read all 10 but I have already completed one and I’m taking part in a readalong during December for the other so realistically I’m hoping to put about another 3 of the others under my belt!  We’ll see.

I loved Station Eleven too, the writing was so good.
Illuminae is a book I keep seeing around the blogging world at the moment yet I have no idea what it’s about. Think I’ll have to find out more about that one.
I also want to check out the Becky Chambers and Pierce Brown books too.
    Great list!

    • @lynnsbooks

Thanks – I hope you get a chance to pick some of them up – I would definitely give a shout out to the Pierce Brown books.
      Lynn 😀

  2. literaryhues

I’ve read Illuminae and I absolutely loved it. I need to check out the other books on your list, I need to read more scifi books omg.

    • @lynnsbooks

Haha – that’s why I get involved in these events as a bit of encouragement and to join other people.
      Lynn 😀

  3. sjhigbee

I love your reading list, Lynn:). Very much hoping you like Doomsday Book – I also thoroughly enjoyed Leviathan Wakes and Morning Star, while Illuminae and the Becky Chambers books are also on my wishlist…

    • @lynnsbooks

I’m really looking forward to Doomsday Book. Thanks for the recommendation.
      Lynn 😀

      • sjhigbee

You’re welcome – I’m hoping you love it, too.

      • @lynnsbooks

        It does sound awesome.

  4. Lisa (@EffingRainbow)

I also have Defenders on my shelf! Love Minus Eighty is a wonderful book – you should definitely buy it!

I also have Illuminae and Leviathan Wakes on the shelves, but I’m planning to watch The Expanse for Sci-Fi Month which means I’ll have seen the show before I read the books… Does that make me a bad book nerd?

    • @lynnsbooks

Haha – yes, a very bad book nerd! I do prefer to read the book but only because once I’ve watched the programme I never go back and do the reading because it influences the way I see the characters and the set up/world, etc.
      Lynn 😀

  5. Bob Milne

Nice haul. I gave Leviathan Wakes a try as an e-book and it just didn’t hook me. It’s one I’d like to try in paperback, but I’ll wait for a mass market edition – those trade paperbacks are just too awkward.

My Top 10 is a mix of review titles and books that I just want to read for myself.

    • @lynnsbooks

Yeah, reading for yourself – that sounds very appealing. That’s why i’ve hardly requested any books for the past two months – I’ve got stacks of my own books that I’m always putting to one side for the review ones.
      Lynn 😀

  6. Barb (boxermommyreads)

I’ve added Illuminae and Gemina to my Christmas list. I think I want them in hardback because of their special formatting but I don’t want to break down and buy them myself right now. I just picked up a Closed and Common Orbit and now I need to read both of them! Great list of books!

    • @lynnsbooks

Yeah, I think I might have to go for Illuminae in hardback – I’ve made a start but it would probably be easier to read as a book.
      Lynn 😀

  7. Tammy

This is a great list! I’ve read about half of these. I read Annihilation and loved it but haven’t had time to continue the series. I also have Love Minus Eighty and Leviathan Wakes on my list. Good luck!

  8. jenclair

I’ve already mentioned that I loved Station Eleven, but I’m interested in Illuminae because I’ve read two books in the Starbound series by Kaufman that I liked. I need to catch up on that series and give this new one a try.

    • @lynnsbooks

I’ve only just dipped my toe into Iluminae yet – I think it could be really good although I’m thinking it would probably make a better read in book format rather an electronic copy – but time will tell.
      Lynn 😀

  9. Jamie Wu

I’m hoping to read Illuminae and Leviathan Wakes sometime soon too. Hopefully… I’ve been meaning to read the Red Rising trilogy too, still haven’t started the first book yet. Ah… that ever growing mountain of TBR, I’m going to conquer you one day.

    • @lynnsbooks

Yes, we’re all going to conquer these TBRs, absolutely, well, maybe, probably one day, almost certainly. Okay, forget it! You have to have a dream though eh!
      Lynn 😀

      • Jamie Wu

Oh yeah. We probably well. One day. Maybe when someone figures out how to be immortal 😀

      • @lynnsbooks

Or invents the elusive time machine!
        Lynn 😀

  10. Lisa @ Captivated Reader

Station Eleven I keep hearing is really good. It seems like I am always adding books to my ever growing reading wishlist after reading TTT threads like this week’s TTT post.

Here’s my TTT post for the week:
    http://captivatedreader.blogspot.com/2016/11/top-ten-tuesday-ten-books-ive-added-to.html

    Happy reading!

    • @lynnsbooks

Yeah – I know what you mean – these TBRs are never going to shrink are they!
      Lynn 😀

  11. maddalena@spaceandsorcery

You are in for quite a few treats with this… reading plan! 🙂
“Illuminae” was one of the best discoveries I made by reading online reviews, and “Morning Star” is a magnificent conclusion to a great trilogy – the only problem I see with it is that it will leave you wanting for more!
As for “Leviathan Wakes” and the whole Expanse series, I can’t recommend it enough, and I encourage you to look for the first season of the SyFy tv series: very well done and a great tribute to the book.

    • @lynnsbooks

Thanks – I’ll definitely keep that in mind. I don’t expect to get to all of these but I like having a sort of plan to try and keep me focused.
      Lynn 😀

  12. ChrissiReads

I really want to read Illuminae at some point!

    • @lynnsbooks

I’ve only just started it but it seems intriguing. It certainly has excellent reviews.
      Lynn 😀

  13. Rinn

Oooh, adding Doomsday Book and The Wolf Road! 🙂

  14. Caitlin Stern

I really enjoyed Illuminae, and will be getting the sequel from the library soon. I’m excited about that, I love books that include texts or emails.
The Expanse series is amazing. It’s thoughtful and complex. Happy reading!

    • @lynnsbooks

Good to hear – I wish I think the only thing with Illuminae is it might be best read as a book rather than electronic version – but, it’s too early to tell.
Looking forward to the Expanse series too – everyone seems to love it so hoping for good things.
      Lynn 😀

  15. thebooksupplier

Great list! I have Illuminae on hold at the library. My wife LOVED Leviathan Wakes and was irritated to learn that the release date for the newest book was pushed back. Happy reading! My TTT if you’re interested.

    • @lynnsbooks

That’s great to know – I love a bit of encouragement as sci-fi is my less well read genre.
      Lynn 😀

  16. Lisa @TenaciousReader

Wolf Road was amazing! Honestly, I think I loved it more than Station Eleven!

  17. Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum

I’m literally sitting here rubbing my hands together in glee to see you’ve put Illuminae on your list and that it’s coming up next. So excited to see what you’ll think! It’s…an experience 🙂

  18. kellyfbarr

I’m not a big Sci-Fi fan, but The Doomsday Book is on my list as well. It came highly recommended by a couple of my friends. I’ve also heard good things about Illuminae.

  19. Greg

Illuminae is good stuff and I love that cover of A Closed and Common Orbit. I just got the first book in that series and am looking forward to reading it soon.

    • @lynnsbooks

Ohh, well, if you manage to pack it in soon, just in case you’re interested a few of us are having a read along of the second book starting in December – although obviously that’s probably a bit short notice!
      Lynn 😀

  20. jessicabookworm

I really hope you enjoy all your science-fiction reading 😀

    • @lynnsbooks

I hope so too – obviously I’m not going to manage all these but 3 or 4 would be good.
      Lynn 😀

  21. Lisa

Nice take on the topic! I need to read Leviathan Wakes and The Doomsday Book (I already have copies of both), Loved Station Eleven.

    • @lynnsbooks

I really like the look of some of these – particularly The Doomsday Book – I have high hopes for that one.
      Lynn 😀

  22. Lauren @ Always Me

I’m reading Gemina right now and it’s awesome! I hope you like Illuminae!

  23. Avada Kedavra

I have Leviathan Wakes on my tbr too. I did not enjoy Illuminae much. Hopefully you will like it. I want to read The long way to a small, angry planet but not sure if I will like it as I heard there is very less science in it.

    • @lynnsbooks

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet reminds of, say, Star Trek – the series – in that it’s a story where you have a spaceship crew – they’re travelling from A to B and along the way they experience a number of little escapades.
      Lynn 😀

  24. Sonia @ The Book Wielding Harpie

Sci-fi is not usually my thing, but I’ve heard so many good things about Illuminae and Red Rising that one of this days I may cave in.

    • @lynnsbooks

Well, I’m currently reading Illuminae so maybe I’ll be adding my thoughts about how good it is soon.
      Lynn 😀
