Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme created by Books by Proxy . This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers. The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme (list below) choose a book (this doesn’t have to be a book that you’ve read), compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite. Future’s themes are listed below – if you have a cover in mind that you’re really wanting to share then feel free to leave a comment about a future suggested theme. I’ve also listed events that take place during the year, that I’m aware of, so you can link up your covers – if you’re aware of any events that you think I should include then give me a shout.
Small update – I’m still catching up with blog hopping and I haven’t even started on comments on my own blog. I have read them all just not got back to everyone at the moment. I’ve been catching up with reviews and review books – or at least trying, I’ve caught a wicked cold and I don’t mind telling you it’s wiped me out. One day I will be fully caught up – one day very soon *fingers crossed*.
This week’s theme:
A cover that annoyed you and why
I have a few things that make me go on a rant about book covers. For the most part I’m very positive about covers and love sharing but there are a couple of things that really wind me up. Titles or author names being almost illegible/invisible. Huge banners that cut out most of the artwork, covers that are baffling because they don’t depict the content at all or misrepresent it somehow and – books with stickers on the covers. I do understand why publishers use the stickers and the desire to shout things from the rooftops, but, I’d go a long way to avoid buying a book with a sticker on it – it used to be that those stickers, were actual stickers and you could at least remove them (although not always successfully) but these days, they’re printed onto the cover. Argh!!!!
Anyway, to the covers – and for the record, these are covers that I like – I just don’t like the stickers:
Anyway, no favourite this week. Just a little medley of covers – that I like (for the record) – but that annoy me because of the stickers. I know, I need to just chill out don’t I?
I’ve updated the list now to include themes for next year. If you know of an event that’s coming up let me know and I’ll try and include covers that work for the event itself so that you can link up to the Friday Face Off and, as always, if you wish to submit an idea then leave me a comment – or if you’d like to host a week then simply let me know. Also, I would just mention that it’s very possible that some of these might be repeats from previous FFOs although I have tried to invent more ‘open ended’ prompt that can be interpreted differently and also prompts that relate to emotions. Finally, don’t struggle with any of these, this is meant to be a fun way of highlighting books. If you can’t come up with a book you think fits for a particular week use a freebie – perhaps a recent read for example:

Oh my, stickers on the cover are the WORST!
Yeah, they’re not my favourite thing and I much preferred them when you could peel them off after purchase.
Lynn 😀
We should create a club of book-stickers haters: something tells me there would be a huge crowd ready to sign on! 😉
And then you could get someone to design some special club stickers to share round so you could all sti— Oh.
😀 😀 😀
Haha – yes, stickers – they do my head in. It was so much better when you could peel them off. Or – just put a small line of text on the bottom of the cover.
Lynn 😀
And as you already know, stickers defacing books is also one of my pet peeves! What a wonderful rogue’s gallery, Lynn:)). And I hope you soon recover from the cold – there are some really unpleasant illnesses out there right now and with all our social distancing, our immune systems haven’t had a good workout recently… Take care!
Thankfully my cold has now gone. It did set me back a bit again but I’m trying to catch up.
Lynn 😀
So glad it’s gone! Yes… catching up does feel a bit daunting. Right now, I’m afraid I’m simply counting it as a win if I can put in any kind of presence:)).
[…] was to compare UK and US book covers and decide which is we prefer. This meme is being nurtured by Lynn’s Book Blog and this week we are featuring covers that annoy me. I’ve selected Our Endless Numbered Days by […]
Lol, I also complained about a sticker this week (and the author saw my post and I had an awkward Twitter moment😬) I love this and agree 100%!
I saw that twitter moment – and I did feel a bit guilty – but I just really do dislike stickers on covers. Just print a line of text on the bottom or something that doesn’t take over the design.
Lynn 😀
Stickers on books are like when you’re watching the credits at the end of a show, enjoying the music, looking out for who played a key role or who was the casting director or … *bam* here’s the continuity announcer with an annoying voice, or the credits shrink to unreadable, or the next show preview takes over! I think it’s disrespectful to all who were involved in creating the product, just as a sticker obscures a good design or spoils the pristine look of the cover. Grrr.
Yes, exactly this – don’t stick a big glaring blob onto the front of your beautifully designed cover. It’s like smacking a big sticker on the Mona Lisa saying ‘by the artist famous for the Last Supper’.
No. Just no.
Lynn 😀
Our son works as the camera grip on TV shows like Doc Martin, Finding Alice, and The Durrells, and so often the credits are shrunk so small to preview the next show that we miss his name and that of his colleagues. I’d also hate to be the composer of a programme’s theme tune discovering my hard work had a cheeky chappie interrupting it to say what was on another channel. A Mona Lisa sticker—priceless!
How exciting. Well, it sounds exciting to me but that could be linked to the fact that I loved the Durrells. 😁
