Today, I’m incorporating the Friday Face Off with Wyrd and Wonder’s #Spooktastic event as the theme this week fits perfectly.  The Friday Face Off meme was originally created by Books by Proxy .   This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers.  The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme (list below) choose a book, compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite.   Future week’s themes are listed below – the list has been updated to help out those of you who like to plan ahead – if you have a cover in mind that you’re really wanting to share then feel free to leave a comment about a future suggested theme. This week’s theme:

Trick or treat – A halloween inspired cover

My cover this week doesn’t have skeletons, pumpkins and witches but a scary house – I always associate creepy, haunted looking houses with Halloween and so this one fits (in my head at least) plus the colours – and middle row, middle cover – does put me in mind of the weirdest ever carved pumpkin.  The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson.

And my favourite – I couldn’t find a really good version of this one for some reason but I like it.  The flies crawling over the top of the book, the font that scoops down into a devil’s tail and the house with it’s glowing eye-like windows – in fact the end of the tale almost gives the house an expression – like a sinister grin.

Amity3

As like last week I’ve added  a Mr Linky here so that you can leave a link if you wish or please leave me a link in the comments so I can visit and check out your covers.  Thanks

Next week – a a cover inspired by Bonfire Night

What a great choice! I haven’t read the book, but I have seen the movie. A couple different versions, in fact. The cover you picked is very creepy, Lynn. I can’t decide which I like best between the second and middle photo in your photo collage.

    • @lynnsbooks

The middle cover was the one that inspired me to choose this book – it just feels creepy and halloweenish to me somehow.
      Lynn 😀

That’s a great book for this week’s theme, Lynn. My favourite cover is the middle one on the second row with the red roots growing out of the title – it looks brilliantly creepy without resorting to blood and guts.

    • @lynnsbooks

That’s the one that inspired the choice this week so good pick 😀

      • sjhigbee

Glad it worked out so well… I found it tricky to find a book that I had read, or would like to read for this theme:)

      • @lynnsbooks

I was thinking of books with witches but couldn’t come up with a really good cover for that theme unfortunately.
        Lynn 😀

      • sjhigbee

There are loads of covers for modern witches – but the classic ones… not so much.

      • @lynnsbooks

        Yeah, that’s what I found 😀

      • sjhigbee

Oh for black crooked hats, wispy white hair and monstrous carbuncles!

      • @lynnsbooks

        Haha 😀

  4. Jackie

You’ll never see me read this book. I don’t want to be scared as hell and it’s a true story ugh! But the cover you chose is okay. However, if I had to choose the one I liked it would be Amity2(entire house in flames with a red background) OR Amity5 (with tree roots growing out of the title)

    • @lynnsbooks

Haha – scary books aren’t for everyone. I love them though – and then that feeling, suddenly realising I’ve stayed up later than everyone else – and I have to turn the lights out and run up the stairs so fast and dive into bed. That feeling.
      Lynn 😀

      • Jackie

I have never experienced that feeling 😦

The one you chose is my fave as well. Something about those flies! I remember being a kid and this movie terrified me. Movies about possession and ones like these are tales I find the scariest – I guess because I find them the most plausible. Who knows. Great choice this week!

    • @lynnsbooks

This movie terrified me too – in fact surely it must have terrified everyone.
      Lynn 😀

  7. Tammy

This book and movie scared the pants off me! Great choice. I love a lot of these covers, the last one is really good, and I also love #6.

  8. waytoofantasy

Great pick! I never read this one but I read 666 by the same author, I think in 8th grade, and I remember being terrified by it lol.

    • @lynnsbooks

Ooh, I’ve not read that, I’ll have to go and take a look. thanks
      Lynn 😀

  9. maddalena@spaceandsorcery

Ohhh! So very creepy! I think that the flies crawling over the cover give the additional detail that brings the image from simply scary to shudder-worthy 🙂

    • @lynnsbooks

Yeah, those flies – I only wish I’d found a better copy but it just didn’t seem to be available – or perhaps I gave up looking too soon.
      Lynn 😀

  10. Friday Face Off: Halloween – Perfectly Tolerable

[…] This is a weekly meme created by Books by Proxy, but currently run by Lynn’s Book Blog. […]

  11. PerfectlyTolerable

I like the third cover best, but that is probably because it is the least creepy and therefore the worst suited for the book 😂

    • @lynnsbooks

Funnily enough I liked that cover too – but it feels totally unlikely for the content and maybe even a bit misleading for would-be readers as it has a very light and almost comic-book touch.
      Lynn 😀

  12. jennifertarheelreader

This is such a fun meme, Lynn. I will try to participate some time soon. Your choice is my favorite, too. It reminds me of the older style covers and I love the extra added details of it.

  13. Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum

Nice pick! I really like the effect of the jack o lantern eyes!

    • @lynnsbooks

Yeah, I did struggle a bit with this one – was thinking of witches but couldn’t find a cover that really did it for me.
      Lynn 😀

  14. Carmen

Yes, I agree. You can’t go wrong with the pointy tail. 😉
