‘The bigger they are the harder they fall’

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme where every Tuesday we look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) bookish examples to demonstrate that particular topic. Top Ten Tuesday (created and hosted by The Broke and Bookish) is now being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl and future week’s topics can be found here. This week’s topic is:
Longest Books I’ve Ever Read
The page counts are approximate so don’t hold me to them! And, I think these are possibly the longest books I’ve read although It’s equally possible that I’ve forgotten one or two here and there. I suspect that we may all share a few books this week:
- JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings 1200 pages (Not sure if this one really counts because technically speaking this is three books. But, I read it as a whole so I’m going for it.

- Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson just over 1000 pages

- A Song of Ice and Fire by GRR Martin just over 800 pages

- Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell over 1000 pages

- The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Duman1276 pages

- Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke 1006

- The History of Tom Jones by Henry Fielding over 900 pages

- Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey over 1000 pages

- The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova 700 pages

- American Gods by Neil Gaiman over 600 pages

Reading epic fantasy really does give you a head start this week, doesn’t it? 😀
Haha – yes it does. And I forgot a few really obvious ones – like Harry Potter.
Lynn 😀
I keep meaning to read The Historian. Some great looking books here and yes, your Tolkien totally counts.
Yay – I read LoTR in one go and it was compiled into a complete copy but I have seen the sets where all three are together in a presentation case which is why I wondered.
Lynn 😀
I tend not to read long books anymore, like I did before blogging, which is sad! I used to love savoring a book for a couple of weeks.
Yeah, I must admit that blogging has lessened my love of the weighty tome – although I still go for the odd one here and there.
Lynn 😀
I loved The Historian! Reading LOTR is a major accomplishment, whether as one volume or separately. 🙂 Jonathan Strange is a mysterious oversight for me this week — it should have been on my list too! Great selections.
Thanks Lisa – the Historian was so evocative wasn’t it.
Lynn 😀
You are the second person I have seen that has counted the LOTR trilogy as one book 🙂 The other guy said that Tolkien wrote and considered them one book! So it totally counts 😀
Phew – good to know I’m not alone.
Lynn 😀
Oh my! I did not remember that The Count of Montecristo was that long!
Maybe elapsed time made me forget, or maybe I breezed through this story of revenge so quickly that I didn’t notice… 😀
Me too – I was quite surprised. It is a great story though so like you say, perhaps we simply breezed through it. Those were the days when deadlines were none existent and I could really dwell on a book.
Lynn 😀
The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my fave classics! And like Tammy, I think I read a lot more doorstopper novels when I was younger. Like…in highschool. Something something youth and stamina. 😛
Haha – yes, something something – not as many responsibilities. LOL
Lynn:D
I loved a few of these. The Historian was really an interesting one. I have also heard that Tolkien wrote LotR as one book originally. 🙂
Ahh, good to know. Thanks
Lynn 😀
Haha, as an epic fantasy reader, I can’t imagine it was too hard for you to fill up this list 😀
Like with most people I think I used to read more huge chunksters although a couple of these are quite recent.
Lynn 😀
Lynn, I totally think The Lord of the Rings counts as one book 😉 To be fair everyone does refer to the three books collectively i.e. have you read “The Lord of the Rings” rather than have you read “The Fellowship of the Ring”.
True enough 😀
Off this list I’ve only read The Historian, but it was YEARS ago! I remember enjoying it, but I don’t remember much about it lol
American Gods! Neil Gaiman is a favorite of mine but I’ve been putting it off forever because I hate reading long books. I have commitment issues lol
