#SPFBO 2018 – My book list

I recently posted (here) about the next Self Published Fantasy Blog Off that’s due to start in August this year and said I would update my blog with the list of books I’ll be checking out. Below is the list of books and authors I’ve been assigned.
I will be posting all my book covers very soon and choosing my three favourite covers for this year’s competition. Note to authors. I will be taking the covers from Goodreads so if there is a more uptodate version that you want me to check out then please let me know.

Yeah, you should keep your eye on the progress – there have been some really good books in the past three year and this competition really helps to give them notice. Two books from the competition are on this year’s B&N best SFF list.

This looks like a great list, there are some awesome titles!
I’m looking forward to them all – if I’ve learnt anything in the past three years it’s to keep a completely open mind and go into each read with no predetermined ideas.

Most of the titles would make me not want to read the book – although of course that’s not always fair (I’m a big Robin Hobb fan but i’m always frustrated by how bad many of her titles are). It’s hard in fantasy, unfortunately, to find a title that’s not a snowclone.
Ones I could tolerate here:
– Paragon (bland but inoffensive)
– Victor Boone Will Save Us (normally I can’t stand edgy ‘modern’ titles in fantasy – if the title tries too hard for attention it makes me think the rest of the book doesn’t merit it. But in this case, I think the title has enough innate rhythm, and is sufficiently weird and audacious, that I find it sort of intriguing).
– Deadmarsh Fay (so over-the-top it becomes OK again. Although I wish it were ‘fey’, since that has more, and more interesting, possible meanings. Still, maybe they just don’t know the difference…)
– An Empire of Tears (again, if you’re going to be Fantasy, you may as well be Peak Fantasy)
– Kingshold (inoffensive)
– Under Ordshaw (dull and a little cheesy, but still inoffensive and slightly intriguing)
– High Barrens (probably my favourite of the titles. Well no, objectively I prefer Victor Boone Will Save Us as a title. But ‘High Barrens’ I think feels like the most promising of the titles (I’m pretty sure VBWSU won’t live up to its title’s promise). Suggestive and distinctive, without being too cliché).
We need to think of a list of good, original titles! That could either be good fun or extremely hard work. I’m looking forward to digging in, there were some good surprises last year.

An impressively long and ambitious list, as always! I’m so impressed by how much work goes into SPFBO each year. I’m not familiar with any of these, but I’m looking forward to hearing what you have to say about them throughout the competition!

Wow, and we’re off to a start on another SPFBO! I’m not familiar with any of these books, but I recognize an author or two in this list. Good luck to everyone involved!
It doesn’t kick off (in review terms until August, and we’ve moved to a 10 month period instead of 12. There are some very good looking books so I’m excited for my books and for the finalists.
