Favorite Book Quotes

As the month of March is Middle Earth Month I’ve taken all my quotes from Tolkien’s Lord of the rings:

lotr

  1. ‘A cage,’ she said. ‘To stay behind bars, until use and old age accept them, and all chance of doing great deeds is gone beyond recall or desire.” Eowyn
  2. “I look foul and feel fair.”  Strider/Aragorn
  3. “He paused and looked at Frodo doubtfully. ‘Have you got it here?’ he asked in a whisper. ‘I can’t help feeling curious, you know, after all I’ve heard. I should very much like just to peep at it again.”  Bilbo
  4. “It’s the job that’s never started as takes longest to finish, as my old gaffer used to say.” Samwise
  5. “I think I know already what counsel you would give, Boromir,” said Frodo. “And it would seem like wisdom but for the warning of my heart.” Frodo
  6. And here in the wild I have you: two halflings, and a host of men at my call, and the Ring of Rings. A pretty stroke of fortune! A chance for Faramir, Captain of Gondor, to show his quality!” Faramir
  7. “Ah! The Ring!’ said Boromir, his eyes lighting. ‘The Ring! Is it not a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt for so small a thing?” Boromir
  8. “With a terrible cry the Balrog fell forward, and its shadow plunged down and vanished. But even as it fell it swung its whip, and the thongs lashed and curled about the wizard’s knees, dragging him to the brink. He staggered and fell, grasped vainly at the stone, and slid into the abyss. ‘Fly, you fools!’ he cried, and was gone.”  Gandalf
  9. “I pass the test,’ she said. ‘I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.” Galadriel
  10. Do you have a favourite quote?

“Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.”

LOVE this list ❤ Lord of the Rings is one of my favorite series ever. It's so quotable!

    • @lynnsbooks

It is quotable – the only problem I had was restricting the number of quotes – one does not simply restrict the number of quotes after all.
      Lynn 😀

  2. proxyfish

Beautiful quotes! 😀 I absolutely love them all! I was so close to doing this for my topic too but decided I’d save it for a There and Back Again post 😉

Incidentally I just put my bookmark in just after that exact Gandalf quote for my reread of The Fellowship of the Ring. It still brings a tear to my eye.

    • @lynnsbooks

Aww, I so love this book and it’s just so quotable. Lots of these brought a tear to my eye and I could have put a lot more quotes on there. This has to be the most quotable book I’ve ever erad.
      Lynn 😀

  3. Louise

I love the spin you put on this week’s topic! Lord of the Rings is so full of great quotes.

  4. Barb (boxermommyreads)

Like Louise, I’m sure this book has tons of great quotes to choose from!

  5. Carmen

What a lovely set of quotes! 😉

    • @lynnsbooks

I know – it made me want to watch and read it all at the same time!
      Lynn 😀

  6. Tammy

This was a great idea for this weeks topic. I’m not as big a fan of LOtR as you are, but there sure are some great quotes!

  7. Ash

I haven’t read any LOTR yet, but i need to. I did something similar and did all Alice in Wonderland quotes.

    Here’s our Tuesday posts!

    • @lynnsbooks

Yeah, some books have just got lots and lots of materials for this week’s theme. Harry Potter is another series that would have worked well.
      Lynn 😀

  8. ChrissiReads

I loved looking through these quotes!

  9. PerfectlyTolerable

Great choices!! Tolkien is brilliant 😀

  10. maddalena@spaceandsorcery

It’s wonderful that your first quote was Eowin’s: I always loved that phrase, and the depths of meaning behind it… 🙂
There is one other that always stuck in my mind and gave a perfect, perfect descriptions of Gollum’s character, where Tolkien describes his dark days under the mountains as “furtive eating and resentful remembering”: there is all the nastiness and the tragedy of that creature in just a handful of words…

    • @lynnsbooks

That is such a masterful phrase really, Tolkien was such a genius with words.
      Lynn 😀

  11. katthebookaholic

Such good choices, that series is just so quotable! That Galadriel quote brings tears to my eyes every time.

  12. Nicole Evans

Loved all of these. ❤ ❤

  13. Greg

Ooh nice picks. I like the Galadriel one especially. I always loved Eowyn’s story arc too…

  14. sjhigbee

Oh a brilliant selection – ‘Fly you fools!’ was a family quote for quite a while…

  15. Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense

This is just a reminder that I really need to read this book. I have lovely pocket editions that I need to dust off.

    • @lynnsbooks

They sound lovely – I think I want a pocket edition now. I have envy.
      Lynn 😀

  16. Lisa (@TenaciousReader)

Nice … too bad I’ve not read the book (I know, I know …. I have seen the movie though)

    • @lynnsbooks

The move is actually a really good adaptation. There are obviously some changes but on the whole it remains quite faithful, even using a lot of the same dialogue.
      Lynn 😀

  17. Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum

Nice selection, Tolkien is always a goldmine for classic quotes. And hey, I learned something today! Did not know that March is Middle Earth month! 😀

    • @lynnsbooks

I picked that up from another blog but then couldn’t remember where I’d read it otherwise I would have mentioned the blog name. Still – I went a way and looked up Middle Earth March and sure enough – it’s a thing.
      Lynn 😀

  18. Caitlin Stern

Nice take on the prompt! I like Samwise’s practical nature. 🙂

  19. Annemieke

Ah great to see these quotes. It has been a while since I read it or saw the movies. 🙂

    • @lynnsbooks

There are so many good quotes from LotR. I really enjoyed putting these together.
      Lynn 😀

  20. jessicabookworm

Amazing choices! My favourite LOTR quote has to be: ‘End? No, the journey doesn’t end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it… White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.’ – Gandalf. ❤
