Every Tuesday over at The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic. This week’s topic is:
Top Ten Books I Recommend for Children
I’m not going to particularly say what ages these are for – I think they’re all fairly young although Not Now Bernard, Winnie the Pooh and the Dr Seuss books are probably slightly younger than the others and the JK Rowling book – the Philosopher’s Stone is the first and because of the way the story develops and becomes quite dark it’s a good series to read one a year so that the reader grows along with the characters in the story. I actually had more than 10 this week but I’ve shown some restraint:
- David Mckee – Not Now Bernard
- Roald Dahl – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr Fox, Esio Trot
- E B White – Charlotte’s Web
- JK Rowling – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
- CS Lewis – the Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe
- JRRTolkien – The Hobbit
- AAMilne – Winnie the Pooh
- Frances Hodgson Burnett – The Secret Garden
- Mary Norton – The Borrowers
- Dr Seuss – The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Green Eggs and Ham
Great list, you’re making me feel very nostalgic! I love The Secret Garden so much😊
Yeah, me too. 😀
Charlotte’s Web and Winnie the Pooh are definitely two of my childhood faves. Great list!
Aww Charlotte’s Web is just so good – I remember reading that and being so scared for Wilbur – and then so sad about Charlotte! Winnie the Poor is just brilliant – one of those books that glows with goodness.
Lynn 😀
You hit on so many of my favorites! Charlotte’s Web will forever hold a place in my heart.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
I really enjoyed making this list I must admit. Makes me want to reread some of them.
Lynn 😀
We clearly have similar tastes in children’s books, too. The only one of those I haven’t at some stage owned or borrowed is ‘Not Now, Bernard’. And The Secret Garden was one of my favourite books as a child – though neither my children or grandchildren liked it much. As for Winnie-the-Pooh… it’s just wonderful. This is an awesome list, Lynn:))
Thanks Sarah. It was nice having a trip down memory lane and I actually had to stop myself this week because I could have had a much longer list.
Lynn 😀
I loved the Secret Garden! Great choices!
Thanks 😀 – that certainly seems to be a popular book with everyone.
Lynn 😀
I love the monster on the cover of “Not now, Bernard”: it’s scary and at the same time funny – but maybe that’s because I’m not a child anymore… 🙂
Haha – I loe that monster – atthough he’s not a nice monster.
Lynn 😀
This list made me feel so nostalgic! Great choices.
Thanks – it made me want to do some rereads.
Lynn 😀
Dr. Seuss made my list too. I loved his books as a kid.
Such fun books.
Lynn 😀
Great choices and well done on showing some restraint 😀
Haha, yes, I could have gone on quite a bit with this one.
Lynn 😀
Totally agree with everyone. This is a great selection. The only one I haven’t read is Not now, Bernard. I’ll have to get it out of the library for the kids 😀
Thank you – I don’t think Not Now Bernard is quite as well known but I liked it. I was going to go with the Gruffalo or the Hairy Caterpillar but thought I’d chose something more obscure.
Lynn 😀
All very good choices! I forgot to include Narnia on my list this week — I read the series out loud with my son a few years ago, and we enjoyed it so much!
It is such a good book. I love Narnia.
Lynn 😀
I have fond memories of The Chronicles of Narnia. My aunt gave me the entire series as a child and I read them multiple times. I didn’t know about the allegory at the time, and I want to go back and revisit them as an adult. Great list!

I think it would be a good experiment for me to reread some of these to see how I feel about them as an adult. Of course, I probably won’t do so but the thought is there so you never know.
Lynn 😀
I’ve actually been reading the Harry Books to my five-year-old every night before bed! We’re on to Prisoner of Azkaban now, and I’ve been having a blast reconnecting with the books as well, because it’s been ages since I last read them 😀
They are great books – especially for reading to your children. I think I’d like to go back and reread them.
Lynn 😀
I had Charlotte’s Web and Harry Potter on my list this week too!

Charlotte’s Web is a great book and I think all children should give HP a try.
Lynn 😀
So many great picks! I love your list–it has so many great books that are 100% perfect. I almost put Charlotte’s Web, as well as a few Roald Dahl books but I got kind of overwhelmed, you know?
Yeah, – I do know, I could easily have added many more books.
Lynn 😀
