Every Tuesday over at The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic. This week’s topic is:
Top Ten Yummy Foods Mentioned In Books
It’s odd because food and drink plays a much bigger part in books than you think – especially once you start to really consider it:
- Joanne Harris – Chocolat? Need I say more really, but also Blackberry Wine and Five Quarters of the Orange. Delicious books.
- Scott Lynch’s Gentleman Bastard series – oh my lord, he conjures up some treats, A Ginger Scald particularly stands out – this is a drink that might give you a serious hangover though.
- Jacqueline Carey – never fails to come up with all sorts of delicious foods depending on which series you’re reading and what travels are being experienced.
- Sunshine by Robin McKinley- lots of mentions of Cinnamon Swirl buns – oh yes, give them to me now.
- Seanan McGuire’s Toby Daye – coffee, Toby loves coffee, and so do I in the morning – not after lunch though. Tea is for the afternoon.
- Speaking of tea, The Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger – lots of cups of tea, because everything is obviously improved by a good cup of rosie – isn’t it?
- Harry Potter – you have to give it to JKRowling – those banquets, not to mention the breakfasts – just wow!
- Cookies – everyone has to love cookies and Mercy Thompson (Patricia Briggs) loves to bake cookies when she’s stressing out about something – so basically every book she makes tray loads of them!
- Lambas bread – Lord of the Rings. Bread that fills you up after a bite – bring it to me now.
- ??? this one is for you… suggestions???

Oh, those Harry Potter’s banquets were great…And I fancy a Cinnamon Swirl bun right now. 😉
I know – the problems of reading books with delicious sounding food!
Lynn 😀
Funny you mentioned it but yep, I do recall the cinnamon buns from Sunshine quite well. I didn’t really like that book very much but I know it is very loved.
I did like it – although there was one particular section that felt really out of place – even now I recall it very well!
Lynn 😀
I don’t remember the cinnamon buns at all, so maybe I need to reread Sunshine!
Haha – wasn’t it the place that the main woman (apologies, her name escapes me) worked?? I think so but my memory can be dodgy – perhaps I was eating a cinnamon swirl whilst reading!
Lynn 😀
Yes, Rae Seddon works as a baker in a coffeehouse in the book. They have cinnamon swirl buns “as big as your head”.
Talking tea and you didnt mention Ancillary Justice? 😀 I always think of GRRM when I think of food in books.
I can’t think of much of the food from GRRM – although there always did seem to be plenty of wine being consumed.
Lynn 😀
A Song of Ice and Fire does indeed hold a long list of interesting foodstuffs, as Lisa said: I’ve always been curious about lemoncakes… 🙂
Mmm, lemoncakes – who could resist.
Lynn 😀
Yummm… And I’ve just completed reading an L.E. Modesitt book and he ALWAYS makes a big thing of food:). But these are all excellent choice, Lynn!
Food in books – it shouldn’t be allowed really.
Lynn 😀
Yes… I gain weight fast enough – without consuming calories while I’m reading!
Cinnamon buns and cookies please! And haha! I’ve just been watching the earlier Harry Potter movies with my kid this week. Oh those banquet scenes make me hungry (and jealous that they can just magically make food appear).
I know – I love those banquets. Great pies of goodies. nom
Lynn 😀
Great list. 🙂
thanks 😀
Mmm I would absolutely love to go to one of Hogwarts’ amazing feasts too! I would have to add The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to your list for the White Witch tempting Edmund with hot chocolate and Turkish Delight … in fact this book might have made it onto my list 3 times 😛
And let’s not forget tea with Mr Tumnus.
