Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme created by Books by Proxy . This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite book covers. The rules are fairly simple each week, following a predetermined theme (list below) choose a book, compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite. Future week’s themes are listed below. This week’s theme:
‘Checkmate’ – a cover featuring a black and white design.
And I’ve chosen Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke
My favourite(s) this week:

I like the simplicity of the above cover

And this one is so unusual – it almost plays a trick on you when you try to read it.
Which is your favourite?
Next week – a cover which is mostly purple

22nd September 2017 – As purple as the heather – a cover which is mostly purple
29th September 2017 – Faint Heart Never Won Fair Lady – a cover featuring a heart

I like the simple white cover as well, and also the black cover. The first one shown isn’t bad either.

They’re all a little bit ‘meh’ really – especially for such a good book. In fact I was surprised for a book with it’s standing that there wasn’t a bigger range of covers.
Lynn 😀
I think I’d pick the black and white one with the Gaiman introduction.
You can’t go wrong with Gaiman!
Lynn 😀
I like the second and third covers in the first row.
They’re all very similar aren’t they which makes it difficult to choose an obvious winner in a way.
Lynn 😀
For some reason the fourth cover is catching my eye. I do love the simpler covers!
Yeah, I like the simple covers – and they are difficult to choose between because they’re so similar.
Lynn 😀
Simpler is indeed better, but I also like the third cover in the last row: it’s quite… moody, for want of a better word 🙂
Moody is definitely a good word for it. Lynn 😀
I like the bottom cover with the black and white transposed in the shape of the rook:). This has been another great success in that everyone has chosen different books and they have all been great:).
There were quite a few available for this one which was a nice surprise. Sometimes I have a book in mind but then it doesn’t have any really different covers!
Lynn 😀
Oh yes – I’ve been there and done that…
After loving the TV adaptation, I really need to read this! I really like your choices, in fact I pretty much love all the bird covers on the bottom row and the top left 🙂
I thought the adaptation was done brilliantly. It’s amazing how many fantasy books can be turned into remarkable tv and films these days.
Lynn 😀
I’m not crazy about any of these covers, I confess, but I think the best one is the second one of your favorites. It really is unusual, and indeed it plays tricks – I like that!
Yeah, I really like the trick with the font. But a surprisingly unimpressive bunch of covers for such a good book.
Lynn 😀
I like both the black and white covers the best, probably because they’re the ones that I’ve seen around the most. I still have to read this one of these days!
I loved this but it is definitely a huge book to take on – with lots of footnotes!
Lynn 😀
