Every Tuesday over at the The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic. The topic this week is:
Ten Books That Have Been On Your Shelf (Or TBR) From Before You Started Blogging That You STILL Haven’t Read Yet!
What a sad topic! Makes me feel quite guilty looking at my shelves and digging these books out! I’m not sure if all of these are pre blog or not – I just know that the ones on this list have been waiting a while. In no particular order:
- Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
- Straight Razor Cure by Daniel Polansky
- Libriomancer by Jim Hines
- Cinder by Marissa Meyer
- The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie
- American Gods by Neil Gaiman
- If I Stay by Gayle Forman
- Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell
- The Magician’s Guild by Trudi Canavan
- Consider Phlebas by Iain M Banks
So, any suggestions which of these I should read first??

Only three of the ten are familiar to me, and of those I’ve read the Canavan. My sister, mum and I enjoyed that series!
I might’ve done this list if I hadn’t given away all my books a few months ago!
I’ve also been trying to cut some of my books down so I know where you’re coming from. It’s so much easier (and sneakier) to store books on the kindle – and they don’t make you feel quite so guilty.

It all depends on your mood – you might need gin and prosac after reading Oryx and Crake which is truly grim. Cinders is quirky, fun and very readable; The Magician’s Guild is classic fantasy; The Blade Itself is rollicking and violent – one of the first books that inspired grimdark; The Straight Razor Cure is a wonderful first person narrative, with an amazing anti-hero; Consider Phlebas is compelling and an imaginative insight into where we might end up – but where you should start? Cloud Atlas – David Mitchell is a genius and if you remotely enjoy fractured narratives, this is a masterpiece that transcends genre and will and should be regarded as one of the greatest novel of the last century.
Not that I have firm views about this subject. At all:)
You do have to be in the right mood for grim! Cinders I do so want to read! The Blade books I had all three (unread) and let somebody else take them to read and – guess what – never got them back! Anyway, I’ve bought the first two again so will definitely pick up. Haha – will definitely have to get to Cloud Atlas then!

Ugh, this topic makes me cringe because I know that I have a ton! I’ve been meaning to read Libriomancer for ages now – maybe we should do a buddy read or read-along for that one and see if some others would like to join. I’ve been having a lot of fun with those lately!
That would be a great idea. Either really – the readalongs are a really big incentive for me to catch up and I love exploring the book with others.

My vote would be either Libriomancer or Cinder. I really enjoy the Jim Hines series although I still need to read books 3 and 4. Hope you love them all!

Oh, I’m equally “guilty” of having neglected too long The Blade Itself and American Gods! As for Consider Phlebas, that I did not enjoy as much as other Banks novels, it’s common opinion that though it’s the first in sequence in the Culture series, many recommend to start with Player of Games, and to go back to Phlebas at a later date.
Now that I have some Banks novels “under my belt” I’d like to try and re-read this first one and see how it goes…

Oh, I want to read Oryx and Crake as well (though I added it after reading The Heart Goes Last, which was a review book)
I’ve only read The Magician’s Guild. Trudi Canavan is one of my favourite authors so I would defintiely recommend that! Clever and interesting, not too heavy but very gripping.
I haven’t read American Gods but everyone I’ve spoken to who has loves it.

I’ve been meaning to try ANYTHING by Iain M Banks since before I started blogging. I can’t believe I’ve never read him, shame on me. Consider Phlebas has been the one most recommended to me when it comes to where to start though 🙂

Oryx and Crake is amazing (although I still haven’t read the final book in the trilogy). I really loved Cinder and the whole series — such fun.
I have to read both! Need a time machine that’s all.
