I got you under my skin…

Every Tuesday over at the The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic. The topic this week is:
Top Ten Things Books Have Made Me Want To Do or Learn About After Reading Them
I’ve broken this down into travel/things to see/do, food and drink, educational.
- I’m going to Prague in December this year, I’ve been wanting to visit there for a while but some of the descriptions in Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone were so excellent it made me want to visit even more.
- A few years ago, and pre blog so unfortunately I can’t at the moment recall the name of the book, I read a book set in Florence, we were due to visit Florence later that year and after reading the descriptions of Sienna we took a day trip – it’s an absolutely beautiful place and I seem to remember the book saying it has a lovely square, which is almost feminine – I completely agree! It is stunning and reached through the most olde world twisting and turning shop lined streets.
- After reading The Undying by Ethan Reid my interest to visit the catacombs in Paris was definitely piqued – and visit the catacombs we did! What an experience. I’ve seen the horror film that was filmed down there since going on the tour – not sure if I’d have visited if I’d seen the film first!
- Ginger Scald – this sounds like an amazing cocktail doesn’t it – I don’t think I’ve perfected a recipe for this but I’m giving it a go. Scott Lynch’s Gentlemen Bastard series.
- Joanne Harris – Chocolat – no explanation necessary.
- Butterbeer – okay, I haven’t tried this – because where would I find it – answers on a postcard please. J K Rowlings Harry Potter.
- Most of the food in Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel series – usually delicious sounding Mediterranean food with couscous, olives, almonds, goats cheese, flat breads – yum.
- The Shards of Heaven by Michael Livingston – this book, as soon I’d finished reading it made me want to go out and read up about Cleopatra and, more to the point, her daughter Selene.
- Masks and Shadows by Stephanie Burgis – this book is based around a number of historical events. The story really intrigued me and I did go and look up some of the detail – I was also really curious about one of the characters, who was a castrato – and I also went and read up a little about that too.
- Witch Light by Susan Fletcher – is a book that I absolutely love and put Susan Fletcher firmly on my author wishlist. Again, I was really intrigued by the historical events portrayed in the story and went to read up a little more after I’d finished reading.

Oh, ginger scald does sound great! And I’ve had butter beer. They have it at the Harry Potter section of Universal studies (was delicious, assuming you like butterscotch). So many great choices/books on this list 🙂
Everybody seems to have tried butter beer or knows where to buy it – it simply never occurred to me about Harry Potter world.
Lynn 😀
I’ve had butterbeer at the Warner Brothers ‘Harry Potter Studio Tour’ here in the UK, it is very, very sweet 😀
Hah, maybe i wouldn’t like it then – I’m not into really sweet drinks (although, I do like frapuccino)
Lynn 😀
Butterbeer can be found at Harry Potter theme parks. I haven’t try it yet, but I definitely want to!
I haven’t visited Harry Potter – my friend has been countless times – I shall have to ask her if she can buy one and bring it back for me.
Lynn 😀
Let us know if you ever taste it 🙂
Oh! I didn’t know Daughter of Smoke & Bone was set in Prague. I’m going there next month 🙂 Will have to pick it up before then, or during 🙂
Oh, let me know how you get on in Prague – we’re going in December so if you want to share any tips then please do.
Lynn 😀
I certainly will. Only going for 3 nights but I’m hoping we’ll get to see enough of it in that time 🙂
Cool – I think we’re going for 3 (or maybe 4 nights). It’s always nice for others to share their experiences though. Hope you have a great time.
Lynn 😀
It’s incredible the things we pick up after reading books! 🙂
It really is!

Oh hell YES to a Ginger Scald. I might regret it after, but it would be worth it.
I do love visiting a city after I’ve read about it (also reading about cities I’ve visited) – I’ve just been back to Paris for the first time since reading The House of Shattered Wings, and it was wonderful. I’m yet to go to the catacombs though – we went to Pere-Lachaise this time, but my beloved didn’t fancy going underground when it was 30+ degrees outside!
We had an amazing time in Paris – it was December so heat really wasn’t a problem! We also visited Pere-Lachaise and out of all the things that we had planned to do – that one, which was quite impromptu was an amazing day all round. I loved Paris, so lovely. The catacombs were really fascinating.
Mmm – Ginger Scald – actually the Scott Lynch books also have some great sounding food!
Lynn 😀
Yes, Masks and Shadows, indeed! It made me read more about the historical period and set me to listening to some Haydn, which I enjoyed very, very much. Books can truly be multi-dimensional experiences… 🙂
I love books that make me want to visit somewhere or read up more about a historical period. Masks and Shadows was great for that.
Lynn 😀
Book settings can be really enticing. Too bad we have no way to travel to the fictional ones! Or maybe it’s a good thing, as they tend to be dangerous…
Haha – yes, maybe that’s why so many bloggers this week want to learn about knife throwing and poisons – useful for when travelling to imaginary settings!
Lynn 😀
Great list! I have always wanted to try butterbeer!

I think I just like the sound of it.
Lynn 😀
Reading about places in books make me want to travel too! I think that’s the biggie for me. Not much else gets under my skin like a real places in the world I’d like to visit, especially if the story contains a lot of historical context because I always love learning about them.
Yeah – I love finding out about things through the books I read. it gives me a whole other way of connecting.
Lynn 😀
Although I haven’t read any of these books I love it when a book piques my interest about some part of history I haven’t explored much before.

That’s one of the things that really appeals to me too.
