Every Tuesday over at the The Broke and Bookish we all get to look at a particular topic for discussion and use various (or more to the point ten) examples to demonstrate that particular topic. The topic this week is:
‘Ten Books Set Outside The US’
I adapted this slightly – to a world trip which includes a couple of US stopovers. Around the world in just 10 books
- London – Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch
- Paris – The Undying by Ethan Reid
- Venice – The Serpent of Venice by Christopher Moore
- Greece – The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
- Egypt – The Shards of Heaven by Michael Livingston – set between Rome and Egypt
- Hong Kong – The Walled City by Ryan Graudin
- China – The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo
- Japan – Confessions by Kanae Minato
- LA – Made to Kill by Adam Christopher
- New York – The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman

That’s a really good list, Lynn:) I’ve only read The Rivers of London on that list, which is one of my favourite urban fantasy series. Which ones are your favourites and would you particularly recommend? Have you any ideas about Friday Face-off?
Well, I really like Alice Hoffman so perhaps the Museum of Extraordinary Things or the Shards of Heaven – I thought that was excellent.
Sorry – I’ve been away for just over a week and very behind. I messaged Proxy and suggested perhaps :
“Still round the corner there may wait, A new road or a secret gate.”
A cover that has a gate or gates.
I’ve not heard back but thought I’d go for that as a theme this week, also mentioned it to Drew.

Great list. I love the idea of Venice, I read Eat, Pray, Love which described it so beautifully.I haven’t read anything set in Egypt or Greece although the two are definitely locations that I like. I will look up the books that you mentioned.

The Roman/Egyptian book is a fantasy take (but only light on fantasy) on the Cleopatra era. It’s a really good book that I enjoyed very much.

I love how you’ve adapted this to take us on a trip around the world 🙂 I haven’t read any of these books but I really want to read Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch and The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.
I think you’d like both of those to be honest – it’s just a question of making time to fit them in isn’t it!

I liked the idea of going around the world in 10 books. I haven’t read any of them; I guess it’s time to start.
I was going to go along the route of Phileas Fogg but instead chose Michael Palin’s around the world trip – I couldn’t fit in all his stops because it would have been too many books so on reflection I think I should have left off the two US books given the nature of the topic – but, you can’t travel around the world and not stop at the US!

Oh, or The Sudden Appearance of Hope, which would be more than ten countries right there, lol!
I know – I though of using that particular book but I couldn’t remember all the places visited and (tbh) was too lazy to go back and do the homework!
