Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme being hosted by Books by Proxy . This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite books’ covers. The rules are fairly simple and can be found here. Each week, following a predetermined theme choose a book, compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite. Simples. This week the theme is:

A cover which features an idealised land
This week I’ve gone with The Just City by Jo Walton – because it seems perfect for this theme – a story about an experiment to create a truly ‘just’ city based on Plato’s Republic:
The first cover really draws my eye I have to admit and I like the colours and the font very much. The darker cover isn’t quite as eye catching in that respect but I think it feels more in fitting with the actual story somehow. However, in spite of that I can’t help my attraction to the first, it doesn’t feel as in keeping with the spirit of the story somehow, in fact it has an almost mediaeval fairytale type feel but I think it’s still my favourite:

I also thoroughly agree with your decision – the first cover is on the book that I own and cherish. I love your idea of Lady in Red – is it okay if I join in with the same theme? It makes it more fun when there’s a set challenge, I think.
Yeah – Proxy posted a couple of extra themes which is where I picked up the Lady in Red from. She’s away at the moment so I said I’d suggest we could all submit suggestions for future covers? Would you be happy with that – I was going to submit some.

That’s great news – I was going to suggest that we get together and suggest some themes. Drew and I went for animals this week, not knowing about the extra couple. I really love the Friday Face-off and would be so sorry to see it stop.
Yeah, I like this meme – anything about covers and even before this one started I was already focusing on covers quite a bit and was thinking of doing something similar – I will definitely submit a few suggestions because I think it would be a shame if we all didn’t continue with this one.

Not a series I’ve heard of but I definitely agree with your choice. 😊 I second what SJHigbee says to about a set challenge, can I join with your theme for a Lady in Red next week to? 😊
Yeah, I was just mentioning that I picked that up off Proxy’s blog – she’d updated it with a couple but she’s away now so I said maybe we could all submit a few ideas – which I think would be quite a good idea? What do you think?
Yeah, that’s a great idea, it’s one of only three meme’s that I generally participate in and it’s good if at times a bit tricky to find a book! 😂
It is tricky to find a book – sometimes I think I have the perfect book but it has no alternative covers! Which is why I like it – it’s challenging even though you don’t think it’s going to be.

I like the second one better. It’s a famous painting with famous philosophers in it.
It is a great cover and it absolutely suits the theme of the book. I think I’m attracted to the first because it feels like the start of a fairy tale.

I haven’t read the book so I can’t comment on which cover suits the story the best, but I think the 2nd cover is my favourite – I like the painting and how it is cut into that sun/moon like shape and it all stands out perfectly against the black background.
It is a lovely cover and really suits the story – I’m just a sucker for the fairytale feel.

Your choice is usually the type of cover I would prefer but I love the second cover a little more because it fits the story a little.
I love the second cover because it’s the one that I associate with this series. I love the first because it has a mediaeval fairytale feel which I can’t resist – even though it frankly doesn’t fit with this week’s theme or the story itself! Bizarre really.

Oh! This is a series I really must start. The audiobooks are being published later this month though, which makes me so happy! I find I can catch up with books a lot sooner if I can listen to them 🙂
Maybe it’s because I haven’t read these books yet, but I prefer the darker cover! I like the artwork on it because it looks kind of like a fresco depicting a scene from ancient Greece (and that feels fitting!). 🙂
It is totally fitting to be honest. I’m a sucker for the feel of the other book but the darker cover is way more appropriate both for the book and the theme this week – I’m just being contrary !!
