The pen is mightier than the sword…(although given the choice, in a sword fight….)

Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme being hosted by Books by Proxy .   This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite books’ covers.  The rules are fairly simple and can be found here.  Each week, following a predetermined theme choose a book, compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite.  Simples.  This week the theme is:

Armed to the Teeth

A cover which features weapons

This week I’ve gone for the Raven’s Shadow series by Anthony Ryan and I’m pitching the entire series in for good measure.  So we have:

I quite like both of these sets of covers. I prefer the fonts for the first set but I like the layout with the split title and author name from the second set.  However, in terms of the overall covers I have to go for the second set.  I love that set, it just really appeals to me: the colours, the moodiness, the way they’re framed and for me they go together really well as an overall set.  In the top frame of books the middle one immediately stands out for me as being a bit like the odd one out somehow – probably because the 1st and 3rd books have a more moody colour theme.  Anyway, my winner this week:

These sets are hard to choose between but I think I slightly prefer the 2nd set; they seem more dynamic.

I just really like the composition although I do like the first set as well – purely because they’re the ones that first drew my eye.

Tough choice this week, think I have to agree with you on the second set but overall my single favourite cover is the Blood Song cover in the first set.

    • @lynnsbooks

Agreed – I love that first cover – the middle one is just a bit meh and puts me off somehow!
      Lynn 😀

Yeah, I have to go with the second set. I do like the first set, but its a little less appealing.

    • @lynnsbooks

The first cover in the first set is great and its the book I bought so it has a place of affection but the overall set is definitely the 2nd one for me.
      Lynn 😀

I love your choices this week:). I think they are both fabulous covers – but like you, I do prefer the second. This is mine –

I’ve just been checking out your choice this week – I’ve only read the first of the series but really enjoyed it and I do have No.2 waiting. I think both of the covers are great but for some reason I’m really drawn to the green.
      Lynn 😀

I thoroughly recommend the rest of the series – the storyline just goes on getting more intriguing:)

      • @lynnsbooks

        Thanks 😀

I agree with you: the second set is looks better – IMHO the choice of not showing the characters’ faces lends more power to the image, somehow.

  6. Lisa (@TenaciousReader)

I like the ones that don’t show faces 😀

    • @lynnsbooks

yes, you’ve hit the nail on the head I think – I never realised but that’s exactly what it is !!
      Lynn 😀

I almost did these books! This is almost too close to call. I think the font for the UK covers is amazing, and I would pick UK… actually – I do XD I like the coloring UK too much too.

    • @lynnsbooks

This week had quite a few choices to go for didn’t it.
      Lynn 😀

Hmm, I’m torn. Both sets feature a common fantasy cover trope – one is the “long haired grim looking guy holding a weapon”, the other is “faceless man dressed in cool armor holding a weapon”…lol! I will go with a tie! 😀

    • @lynnsbooks

A tie is actually a good call with this week’s I think – I almost went for a tie but it’s just the middle cover of the first set – it bugs me somehow!
      Lynn 😀

The second set is my winner two, and within it, the cover for Blood Song stands out for me.
