Here we are again with the Friday Face Off meme being hosted by Books by Proxy . This is a great opportunity to feature some of your favourite books covers. The rules are fairly simple and can be found here. Each week, following a predetermined theme choose a book, compare a couple of the different covers available for that particular book and choose your favourite. Simples. This week the theme is:
Like One, That on a Lonesome Road
A cover which features a road
I thought about this for a while and came up with a few choices but I’ve decided to go with The Fellowship of the Ring by JRRTolkien.

I quite like all of these to be honest for different reasons. I like the first one that clearly shows the fellowship heading off into a mysterious forest. The second one succeeds in having an epic feel with gandalf and his cloak flaring out. The third image is very peaceful and rural, a perfect picturesque countryside – just before the darkness moves in! And, finally a rather darker cover that reflects the seriousness of the Fellowship and their mission in I love the colours.
Difficult to choose this one but I would have to go for the first – I just love all the detail and the fact that the characters seem to be travelling on a road that is set to become darker!

I love this book. In fact, I actually used something from it for my giveaway entry… but I think only one person got it! I guess it’s not as popular as I think it is! All of these covers for it are better than the dumb movie version one I have.

I must confess I’m not all loved up with movie tie in covers – it kind of makes me feel sad for the people who’ve worked up the artwork for the original only to have an actors face stock on the cover.
Lynn 😀
My choice would fall on the second cover, for no other reason that it features Gandalf and reminds me of my one-volume copy of LOTR featuring John Howe’s Gandalf who strides powerfully forward… 🙂
Yeah, I do love that Gandalf is on that cover.
Lynn 😀
Agree with you about the characters travelling on a road that looks to be getting darker, it adds an ominous feeling about where that road is leading but I have to say I prefer the final cover. 🙂
I love all these covers to be honest – the last one is particularly dark isn’t it? Good choice.
Lynn 😀
I tend to prefer the set of covers from the third choice because they were done by Tolkien himself.
And not a cover, but I recommend:

I didn’t know that – how cool! And thanks for the link 😀
Great book choice 🙂 I particularly like the 2nd cover, perhaps because it has the same gold rune border as my copy of The Hobbit. I also really like the font on the 4th cover.
I do love that rune border – it just is so perfect for these books!
Lynn 😀
I like the 2nd and the 4th, but I would definitely choose the 2nd as my favorite because that one screams danger.
And we all love a cover that screams ‘danger’!
Lynn 😀
yep, I like the same one best 🙂
It is a great cover 😀
Perfect book choice!!!! I really love the second cover but they all have their charms 😀
They really do – I love, for example, the patchwork countryside!
Lynn 😀
There must be HUNDREDS of different covers for each of The Hobbit, and each of the LotR book!
It was between the first two cover, and I agree with your choice. I like the art better and that light green they chose, may me feel like I am about to read an adventure story.

Thanks – I’m on holiday but trying to catch up! Looking forward to seeing your choice this week cos I thought it was tough.
Lynn 😀
Yeah, it’s a lovely cover, and of course you’re right – there are hundreds of covers for these books.
Lynn 😀
I figured this one would have been a tough theme to do, but of course, why didn’t I think of LOTR/The Hobbit? 😀
I also thought it was going to be tough – and it was in that this was the only choice I could come up with! I do love these covers though.
