No.19: The Island of Dr Moreau by H G Wells
As part of Vintage Sci Fi month being hosted by Little Red Reviewer I’ve given myself a small challenge to post a vintage book each day – one that I’ve read – and to highlight some of the covers. Today’s choice is : The Island of Dr Moreau by H G Wells. Published in 1896 a creepy story involving a Dr who is experimenting with – well, you’ll have to read it and find out!
First Edition cover:

First Edition
1958 Ace Books:

1964 Penguin – creepy!

1975 Berkeley:

1977 Pan:

1988 Signet:

1994 Bantam: I like this one:

2005 Penguin: Curiouser and curiouser:

The 1977 cover is not bad, but I agree with you on the 1994 one: that shadow under the tree is far more shiver-worthy than anything else!
Yep, gives you the shivers – and yet makes you want to keep looking, brrr!

I LOVE the colors used in the 1994 Bantam one! Kinda like the 1988 Signet one too, because I have a fondness for painted covers.
The Bantam is a lovely cover – I think it’s my favourite, it looks kind of peaceful at first – and then you notice the dark figure and it gets all creepy!

The Pan cover is a nice design — it kind of reminds me of Animorphs 😛
Haha – yes, it does!

I have two copies of The Island of Dr.Moreau and none with these covers. I read it in my first year of college and I enjoyed it.
It’s a great story and definitely inspired a number of other stories I think.
