No.17: A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs
As part of Vintage Sci Fi month being hosted by Little Red Reviewer I’ve given myself a small challenge to post a vintage book each day – one that I’ve read – and to highlight some of the covers. Today’s choice is A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Originally serialised in 1912 the novel was published in 1917 and was ‘considered a classic example of 20th-century pulp’. Some interesting covers I think (you’ll certainly be able to find a theme running through these I think):

I haven’t read this but quite enjoyed the film. I think its interesting how in the earlier covers our hero looks rather Ancient Roman or Greek while the later ones have gone more for the Conan look lol. While I have no idea what to say about the 2002 cover…what on earth is that about?!
I know – that 2002 cover – I had to add it in here! Yes, there is a theme here although the earlier cover is a little more, ahem, covered!

Oh my! This is indeed a trip into Memory Lane!
I read this as a teenager (long ago, when dinosaurs still walked the Earth – LOL) and I remember it fondly…
There’s one constant in these covers though, despite the different concepts: the princess is always quite scantily clad! 😀
haha – I read some of these books – pre dinosaur, at least I think! I enjoyed this book, obviously you have to read it in context – and yes, the covers definitely seem to have a central theme!

Nice gallery. The 1970 one looks like Frazetta, who I normally like but didn’t think he was a great match for John Carter, for some reason. My absolute favorite cover version is this one – it’s possible I read the book because of this cover! http://www.michaelwhelan.com/galleries/princess-of-mars/
