No.12: Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne
As part of Vintage Sci Fi month being hosted by Little Red Reviewer I’ve given myself a small challenge to post a vintage book each day – one that I’ve read – and to highlight some of the covers. Today’s choice is Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne. Classic sci fi from 1864. I liked this book and in fact read it as part of one of the Vintage Sci Fi months. Review here. I like the 65 and think the 74 looks almost comic book – which I also like:

Oh my! That last one (or really the last two, but especially the last one) is just *bad*. The first and second are my favorites.

I like the first one a lot, very old school, and the 74 one does look like comic art of then period. I love that look by the way. That last one is deliciously silly- I agree with the other commenters it’s not very good, but I do like how they’re sailing on a sea smooth as glass and there’s a monster… even if it looks funny. 🙂
I’ve always liked the idea of an underground sea, and am a big fan of the movie (the early one). I liked the sea and the Atlantis ruin they found- good stuff!
The early movie was excellent – I had it in my mind when I was putting these together, and I was absolutely fascinated by this whole other world beneath the surface! That last cover is almost so bad that it’s kind of okay – well, maybe not!
I love the comic book style cover though.

I have this on my Classics Club list and I am really looking forward to reading it after enjoying Around the World in Eighty Days. I agree with you I like the cartoon style of the 1974 Pendulum cover.
It’s a really cool cover isn’t it. I hope you enjoy this one. I did – I admit that I had the old movie going on inside my head whilst reading it!

I got to say I really like the 1980 children’s classics cover. It’s getting me all giddy for adventure 🙂 What’s up with the dinosaur in the 2008 version? It looks cross-eyed and confused 😛 Also, somehow changing the title name to journey to the “interior” of the earth just doesn’t sound as *classy*, haha.
I know – why change the name? Odd. That dinosaur is crazy. I can see what they were doing and why but it really is the oddest cover.
