No.3 Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K Dick
As part of Vintage Sci Fi month being hosted by Little Red Reviewer I’ve given myself a small challenge to post a vintage book each day – one that I’ve read – and to highlight the covers. Today’s book was first published in 1968 and later became the basis for the film known as the Blade Runner. This is a book I previously read as part of Vintage Sci Fi and one that I enjoyed. (Review here). There have been a LOT of covers for this novel – I’m not posting them all because this post could become immense: I found a link through Wiki if you’re interested in taking a further look:

- First Edition, Doubleday 1968
- Granada 1977
- Ballantine 1996
- Voyager 1997
- Orion 2004
- Gollancz 2007
I haven’t posted the movie tie-in covers because they’re not really my thing. Personally, I like the first edition but think it’s very creepy – I would undoubtedly have picked that one up. The second book printed ’77 – I would probably would have run away from, I know, it’s bad but that cover just wouldn’t draw me in! I have to say that I really like the cover that looks like a pixelated sheep head!

The book was so very different from the movie. I recall being surprised by that when I read it years ago. Oddly, I like the second cover the best.
The book was very different. And, I actually preferred it to the film tbh.
Haha – I would never pick up that second book – it’s so funny how everyone differs so much.
Lynn 😀
Just want to second nrlymrtl’s comment – the book is much darker and more tragic than the film. I was shocked when I read it.
The other thing – and perhaps I’m just struggling to remember the film but I don’t remember the connection with the title coming across in the film whereas it’s quite clear in the book.
Lynn 😀
Deckard has an artificial pet sheep, yeah. No mention of it in the film. It’s just Blade Runner which is a reference to Deckard’s job. I can’t remember if the sheep turns up in the videogame, either to be honest.
Oh, a good one! I have the 1997 cover, which leaves me bias in its favour, but i do also like the 2004 and 2007 covers.
Cool book and film! I have the 1997 Voyager cover but I agree I like the pixelated sheep; that is cool 🙂
