As part of Vintage Sci Fi month being hosted by Little Red Reviewer I’ve given myself a small challenge to post a vintage book each day – one that I’ve read – and to highlight the covers that have been produced over time, perhaps to look at the differences in style. Today is a book that I previously read as part of Vintage Sci Fi, a great book and one that I highly recommend for anybody taking part in this event and looking for a good recommendation. Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes (review here):
I like all three covers to be honest for different reasons but I particularly like the second one – perhaps it’s because it’s the version I read and so it has positive notes for me.
Which is your favourite?

I particularly like the second cover too, though I haven’t read the book. Personally, it conjures up far more imagery than the either of the other two covers (though I’m always partial to a good inkblot!) and I love being drawn in before I’ve started reading.
It’s a lovely cover isn’t it. I also liked the inkblot!

I just read this book a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I read the cover on the right, and find my eye is drawn to it. But I kinda like the cover on the left.
It’s funny that because I like the cover on the version I read too! The inkblot is interesting – I think I would find myself over thinking that cover trying to read things into it.

Definitely the second, it’s the one that holds my attention more than the other two, with the one on the left taking the second place.
Thank you for reminding me of this book, that I read oh-so-long ago, a very poignant story…
I think I have warm feelings to the second because it was the version I read and I did think it was a great story. Very poignant indeed!

I’m thrilled that you’re focusing on cover art. It’s neat to see how the artwork has changed over the decades. There is tons of naked people artwork ffrom the 70s, and then graphic design stuff got real popular in the 90s, and some of the artwork is like What the hell is this book about?
It’s quite funny looking at the differences in covers. And yeah – the 70s – lots of naked people! Some of them covers would definitely have stopped me from picking up the book!

Wow, great idea. Isn’t that fascinating to see how cover styles/preferences and aesthetics evolve through the ages?
Yeah, it’s really very curious to look at the differences in covers depending on the era. I’m not sure I’ll have a full 31 books that I’ve read so some of my choices could be a bit dubious but we’ll see.

Have you read any John Wyndham? His books have had some amazing covers over the years.
Only Day of the Triffids – but it’s on my list. Do you have some more recommendations for him??
Erm, all of them!? He’s my favourite. But I super loved The Kraken Wakes and The Seeds of Time.

My favorite cover is the second one 🙂
I watch the movie adaptation of this book and it was great but at the end it was so heartbreacking that I couldn’t stop crying. So now I’m afraid to read the book because I know how it it is going to end… I’ve heard amazing things about this book from whole of my family so maybe one day, I’ll manage to read it 😉
