This week over at the Broke and Bookish the topic for Top Ten Tuesday is:
‘Top Ten Hyped Books I’ve Never Read’
This was difficult for me as I’m not really sure about the whole ‘hyped’ thing. Â I’ve gone instead for ten books or series that do seem to have been incredibly popular that I seem to have missed out on:
- The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
- The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas
- The Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo
- The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa
- The Uglies series by Scott Westerfield
- Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
- Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
- Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks
- The Custard Protocol series by Gail Carriger
- Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
So, now you know – you can either break out the verbal sticks and beat me with them for being so foolish and missing out on ‘all the good things’ or you can just tell me which of these I REALLY, ABSOLUTELY should read!!

I’ll leave behind the sticks. 😉 Personally I really enjoyed The Lunar Chronicles. And it isn’t too late to jump aboard as the last one isn’t coming out until November 😉
Other than that I really liked the first book of the Grisha trilogy and Night Circus from your list.
Yeah, The Lunar Chronicles is such a lot of catching up now that I just don’t think I can face it. The Grisha trilogy I quite liked the idea of but read that the ending was a bit disappointing so it kind of put me off. Night Circus – you never know. Never say never.

Of those, you should really get to Gone Girl and Night Circus. They were fantastic!
I think I maybe will try the Night Circus – I’ve watched the film of Gone Girl so think I’ve probably spoiled the read for that one.

The Lunar Chronicles series is on my list as well! I’ve read Throne of Glass and I really loved it. Considering that I am more of a contemporary fan, I suggest you read it as soon as possible. 🙂

I have quit a few of those in my top 10, too. But my friends have read The Uglies series by Westerfeld and speak very highly of it so I’m planning to read it as soon as I can, the other YA stuff like The Lunar Chronicles and The Throne of Glass, I added to my TBR but it will be a long time before I get to them. We are on the same boat here, more or less 🙂
Just simply not enough time and when I get behind with a series I end up feeling overwhelmed and just decide not to get on board with it. I actually have all the Westerfield books – just not ever started!

Malazan and the Wheel of Time made me feel overwhelmed, the sheer number of books in those is intimidating but I’ll start on them soon enough. Then there’s the Discworld…
I’ve actually recently bought the first Malazan book – I’ll tell you my problem, I always end up giving the review books priority! So, I buy books and then keep putting off reading them. I did love the Tiffany Aching books by Pratchett. Wheel of Time – I just can’t face it – it’s like thousands of pages!!

OMG I have never read the first four on your list either. Except I read Cinder which I LOVED. But it’s so hard to get on board with a series unless you start it from the beginning. I did love Gone Girl though!
That’s it exactly – if you pick up from the beginning you sort of role with the series and it doesn’t seem as daunting.

HA I thought I was the only one who hadn’t read the Grisha trilogy! Honestly, I got spoiled on how it ended so I just figure there’s no point. The Night Circus is definitely one of those love it or hate it type books, and I LOVED it! Although there were a few times when I wanted to violently shake the MCs.
Yeah, you and Lisa liked Night Circus so perhaps I should give that a shot.
And, I heard the Grisha ending wasn’t great and it put me off it a little.

I’ve read seven out of those and most of them are your YA picks. Kagawa’s Iron Fey is one I missed though, I’m interested in checking it out because I think I might like it more than the one other book I’ve read by her, Talon.
I haven’t read Talon – I liked the cover though!
I’ve read Kagawa’s first Blood of Eden book which was quite a good one – and I have the second waiting to be read.

Not only have I not read any of those ten, I haven’t even heard of six of them! (although I have heard of one of those authors, and may have heard of books in that series without knowing that’s what the series was called).
To get a list of hyped, popular fantasy or SF books I haven’t read, just ask two simple questions: is this popular? and was it written in the last fifteen years? If so, I probably haven’t read it. And come to think of it, I probably haven’t gotten around to reading most of the popular things from before that time either… so many books…
Haha – very funny. I’m not good at keeping up – but then, you can’t read every series can you! You just have to learn to let some go.

Give Throne of Glass a try, it’s a little slow to start off with, but once you get into it, it’s really good and each book in the series gets better and better. Gone Girl is good, definitely worth a read. The first book in the Uglies series is good but things kind of went downhill from there. The Iron Fey is on my TBR.

Gone Girl is probably not going to happen for me now because I’ve seen the film so it probably spoils the whole surprise element. Yeah, I heard the Uglies kind of goes off a little bit and it put me off a little.

I read the first book in the Uglies series, but never felt the need to read the rest. I haven’t read any of the other books you mentioned, although I do have the first Custard Protocol book waiting for me on my e-reader. I don’t know if it’s going to live up to my expectations because I’ve loved the rest of Carriger’s books so much.

Of the ones you’ve listed, I’ve recently heard really great things about The Grisha and I’ve been long wanting to read Westerfelds Uglies too! Ahhh.
