Oh no you didn’t…

Today over at the Broke and Bookish the topic for Top Ten Tuesday is ‘a freebie’.  Now, surprisingly, I find this more difficult than if somebody just gave me a topic but I’m just going to ‘woman up’ and come up with 10 bookish ‘things that are annoying for me’:

  1. My kindle running out of battery – particularly when I’ve left the house already and forgot to take a back up book, or, even more annoying running out of charge during the last few chapters of a book.  Can’t there be some magical, special battery reserve back up thingy for such emergencies?  Come on people – make it happen.
  2. People talking to me when I’m trying to read on the way to work!  Why?  Especially, and very irritatingly – ‘Are you enjoying that book’?/’Is it a good book’? or my all time favourite ‘Do you like reading’?!! (‘No, this is my own personal form of torture, thanks for asking’)
  3. My library emailing to say the book I’ve been waiting for is ‘in’ – and it isn’t (a fact I only find out by making the journey and it not being on the shelf!  Because, I didn’t have much to do today after all.)
  4. Changes in book cover styles part way through a series – yes, I am that ocd – If I’m collecting a series it better all have the same style.
  5. Not really book related – but, exclamation marks.  I keep putting them everywhere and they’re getting on my nerves!!  I’m getting on my own nerves!!!! Arrrrggghhh !!!!!!
  6. Hype.  I don’t think I need to elaborate. Can’t live with it, etc, etc,.
  7. That thing where people sometimes treat you like an alien – because you like reading.  Like you’re really weird or something.
  8. Missing deadlines – I hate missing deadlines.  It’s my own fault if it happens – or it’s just life in general getting in the way – but I just don’t like it and it makes me grumpy.
  9. The constant obsessive need to have ALL the books.  I actually think I’m getting a little bit better in this respect – but, it’s not easy! (and the exclamation marks are back just to prove it.)
  10. Simply not having enough hours in the day to complete everything and still do the one thing I really want to do – which is read.

That must be the must grumpy, curmudgeonly, sour-puss-faced piece yet.  Apologies.  Apparently not feeling well and being too busy to slow down a little doesn’t sit well with me.  For the rest of the day I will practice smiling – except to the people in No.2.

I’m with you on the kindle – so much so that I end up taking my kindle loaded with books and a physical book with me just in case 😉

    • lynnsbooks

I hate it when it keeps coming up with low battery – and I’m so near the end of the book and I’m desperate for it to just last until I either get home or reach the end.
      Lynn 😀

  2. RoseReadsNovels

I agree with number 7, people who don’t ‘get’ reading are really, really annoying.

    • lynnsbooks

I know – and yet for some strange reason they seem to think that we are the annoying ones – how odd!
      Lynn 😀

  3. Rosy Mercer (@ReviewDiaries)

Ha! Love this and agree with you on so many. THE COVER CHANGES, WHY DO THIS!? It really really upsets me when they decide to change a cover part way through a series, I cannot stand that!

    • lynnsbooks

I know – you want a set of books to look like ‘a set of books’ not all scrappy odds and sods.
      Lynn 😀

  4. chocolatepages

What a good idea for a TTT. I agree with them all except the hype one, I don’t mind a bit of hype. I especially agree with number 10, I need more time in the day!

    • lynnsbooks

Yep – more time. At the top of all our lists that one I think.
I don’t suppose I mind hype in one way – but it just puts me off reading the book, like I just become really stubborn about not wanting to read it for some reason then when I eventually do read it I usually end up kicking myself. I wonder how many good books I miss out on because of this.

#10 is my biggest problem for sure! Awesome list, I do love top ten freebies, I actually write ideas down so I’m ready when this freebie week pops up! (Oh and I tend to overuse !!!! too!!!!)

    • lynnsbooks

I can’t help myself with the exclamation mark – but I really feel like I should try to stop over using it!!!
      Lynn 😀

You may want to invest in one of those rechargable batteries that you can get for phones. Most Kindles charge with the same port as an Android phone.

And I agree with you 1000% of the changing of cover design mid-series!!!!!!!

    • lynnsbooks

Ohh, that’s a really good idea – I never even thought of that. We bought one last year when we went on holiday because it’s really annoying if your phone runs out of battery – particularly now that it’s also your phone as well. I just need to carry one of those around. Yes!!!
      Lynn 😀

  7. Lisa (@TenaciousReader)

Great list. Your number 2 made me laugh. I really wonder how some people are able to function.

    • lynnsbooks

It’s one of the perils of public transport. I think I could literally write a comedy script based on my weekly journeys to and from work. People in work more often than not think I’m just making stories up for fun but it’s all true.
      Lynn 😀

  8. jessicabookworm

I totally have to agree with No.4 I must have all the books in a series matching 🙂

    • lynnsbooks

I know – I hate changes part way through – it’s not like I’m going to go and buy the whole series again just to make sure they match. So wrong.
      Lynn 😀

  9. digitaltempest

Great list. I thought about doing something like this originally. Then, I thought I would get all long and rambly and just decided I’d better do something. LOL.

    • lynnsbooks

I do find it hard to come up with freebies – this was the first thing that sprang to mind so I just pounced on it but I’m really looking forward to seeing what everyone else came up with.
      Lynn 😀

#2 for sure! People, how do you not understand that holding a book in front of your face is the universal signal for ‘I do not want to talk to you’? I can deal with a little “that’s my favorite book!” or “oh, is that any good?”, but then they just keep talking and I just want to throw the book at them.

    • lynnsbooks

Exactly! I mean, I have on occasion even spoken to somebody else who was reading something I enjoyed – but I just said ‘great book’ and moved on! Stop talking.
      Lynn 😀

  11. iloveheartlandx

I’m with you on a lot of these, people standing over my shoulder whilst I read is one of my biggest pet peeves, with people interrupting my reading following close behind. I also hate cover changes part way through a series, I like all my books (if they are in the same series) to match. I think hype annoys everyone, we could all do without it and I totally understand the people who don’t get why you like to read. It’s like, lots of people like to read, we’re not a mutant species! Great idea for a list btw.

    • lynnsbooks

Haha, perhaps we should be a mutant species – like the X-men, revenge of the Mutant Readers!
      Lynn 😀

  12. lipsyy

    4, 6, 10…ARGHHHHHHHHHHH Yes!

  13. samoak

My kindle running out of battery makes me very grumpy too. Its why I always carry a back-up book in my bag incase I run out of juice or forgot to charge it. 😛

  14. Mogsy @ BiblioSanctum

Number 9 is one I constantly struggle with. I want to read everything. All at once. People say, why don’t you just pick up what you’re in the mood for? But but but…what if I’m in the mood for everything?

    • lynnsbooks

I know. It’s so bad. We should maybe number all our books and then get somebody to randomly pick a number and we have to go with it – it would never work though. I’d still want to read what I want to read – which is ALL the books.
      Lynn 😀

  15. Joey @ thoughts and afterthoughts

LOL. The dreaded questions you get while you read. I think the worst one might be “What are you reading?” when, clearly, my book is up in the air and they could see the title for themselves. Oh lord.

    Joey via. thoughts and afterthoughts.

    • lynnsbooks

Yeah – that. And, ‘is it good’ – ‘shut up and let me read and I’ll get back to you!’
      Lynn 😀

  16. Wendleberry

And your #1 is exactly why i will always love physical books more!

    A big “hell yes” to #s 2 and 6!

    • lynnsbooks

I definitely love physical books more than electronic but I can’t deny that electronic books have me in their thrall now – I’m slowly being enticed to the dark side.
      Lynn 😀

  17. caitlinstern

When people ask me “what are you reading?” unless I’m feeling friendly, I either reply ” a book” or simply lift the cover a little higher so they can see it better. Why do people bother you when you’re reading?

    • lynnsbooks

Clearly I’m reading in order to avoid this unwanted attention – I hate being interrupted.
      Lynn 😀

  18. Tabitha (Not Yet Read)

I agree with absolutely every single one of them. Especially the battery dying and the people talking to you while reading. When I worked in the office instead of at home I would go hide in an empty office or cubicle or my car and one time even a storage closet with a stool just to be left alone!!

    • lynnsbooks

I completely see where you’re coming from. The worst thing I’ve done, and admittedly I do feel bad about this and almost ashamed to admit, but occasionally when I’m travelling to work I’ll see people I know along the way – and I kind of keep my head down and carry on reading in the hope they will walk on by – that’s really bad isn’t it?
      Lynn 😀
