Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2014
So, without further ado, here they are:
- Alex Scarrow – Ellie Quin Series- very entertaining sci fi read
- Christopher Moore – Serpent of Venice – omg so good, and so funny
- Anthony Ryan – Blood Song- a huge epic fantasy that was such a fast read.
- Joe Abercrombie – Half a King – my first Abercrombie – won’t be my last!
- Andy Weir – The Martian – if you haven’t heard of The Martian! Well…..
- Jeff Vandermeer – Annihilation – creepy, scary…
- Tom Lloyd – Moon’s Artifice – excellent fantasy
- Angus Watson – Age of Iron – omg so good, when is No.2 out????
- M L Brennan – Generation V – if you start no other UF than this – then you’ll still be happy.
- Jen Williams – The Copper Promise – i can’t even! Β Ok, I can. This book is awesome. Β The Copper Cat. That is all.
I confess, I’ve had a good year for new authors. Β What about you?
You should definitely read more Christopher Moore, he’s amazing! The Serpent of Venice is actually a sequel to Fool, which you should read as well π
Thanks Vanessa – I definitely intend to read more of his books – I thought Serpent of Venice was fantastic – really, I can’t sing Mr Moore’s praises highly enough!
I will look into The Fool.

I’ve had a good year with new to me authors:
Sharon Lee/Steve Miller (Several in their Liaden universe)
Rachel Bach (Fortune’s Pawn)
Adam Christopher (Hang Wire)
James K. Decker (The Burn Zone)
Mary Rickert (The Memory Garden)
Gabrielle Zevin (The Storied Life of A.J. Fickry)
Andy Weir (The Martian)
and the recently reviewed E.M. Foner (Date Night on Union Station)
Thanks for that Carl – I do love other people’s recommendations – especially yours!
Lynn π
Oh man, I still need to start the Generation V series:-( But I did read a few of the authors you mentioned for the first time also: Jeff VanderMeer and Andy Weir. And I LOVE Christopher Moore! Here’s hoping for more new authors next year!
Yep, fingers crossed for lots more new authors – as though we didn’t already have stacks and stacks to read of the authors we already love! I loved the Moore – do you have any recommendations for the best ones to go back to??
Lynn π
I read a few of those for the first time this year. And a few of them in years past. I would have to get on goodreads for a bit to make my own list, but Brennan would be on it for sure.
Yep, I’m usually late to the party – but that’s part of the love of blogging for me – I can’t even count up the number of new authors I’ve discovered since finding so many blogging friends! On the other foot – think how many I would have missed, the perfect example being Gaiman..
Lynn π
I’ve read half of your list and agree with every single one. Now I seriously need to get to work on the other half of your list! Wish The Copper Promise had a US release!
I hadn’t realised The Copper Promise wasn’t released in the US until recently. That’s a real shame. I hope it gets a release date soon.
Lynn π
Ooh Abercrombie is on my list for next year, as well as Andy Weir. Great list- I’m already desperate to read half of these books!
Well I’ve loved all of these so I hope you do too.
Lynn π
I read Christopher Moore’s Fool a couple of years ago, but it was a bit too dirty for me. Brennan is at the top of my to read list and I’ve been meaning to get to Abercrombie.
I love Brennan – I hope you enjoy the books too.
Lynn π
Half a King is on my to-read shelf too! I have never read a Joe Abercrombie book, but I’ve been hearing such great things about him.
Great list!
Well, Half a King is Abercrombie’s most recent novel and is actually a YA – everybody loves his First Law trilogy. Can’t wait to read them.
Lynn π
I am pleased to hear you have found so many new authors you’ve enjoyed. I’m afraid I haven’t read any of those in your list but I have also made some new author discoveries this year too.
It’s always so nice finding new authors!
Lynn π
OMg your oodles of glee is infectious and I must definitely get to The Copper Promise!
Oh yes, read the Copper Promise – it’s just so good. I loved it.
Lynn π
Alright I will bite – I will read The Martian lol
Hoorah! Yes, read The Martian – it’s very good.
Lynn π
Oh my, I didn’t know Half a King was your first Abercombie novel! How?! π
And yes for Andy Weir, if he ever writes another book I’m all over it.
I know – I had all three of Abercrombie’s books – you wont believe it (or maybe you will) but I let somebody have them to read – even though I hadn’t actually read them – and I never got them back. I’ve decided to collect them again.
Lynn π
These are all new to me … I like the sound of a copper cat π x
Copper Cat is ace – a definite ‘must read’. I hope you give it a shot.
Lynn π
YES Christopher Moore. I swear to Tamora Pierce I almost peed my pants reading Lamb, it was friggin’ hilarious. If you’ve not read that one, I highly recommend it (although it’s pretty controversial for some people). Okay, okay, you’ve convinced me! I’m gonna one-click a copy of Generation V. You know I trust your UF recommendations! π
Oh no! The pressure – what if you don’t like Generation V – although you totally will!! I’m going to go and ‘one click’ Lamb then. I thought Serpent of Venice was so good.
