Best of the Best 2018

Happy New Year everyone.  I hope everyone had a fantastic year and I hope that 2019 is just as good if not better.  It’s that time of year again where I look at my books from last year and at the same time look forward to the books that are due out in the next few months.  By the way, I’ve already seen some lovely lists of forthcoming books.  Check out this great post from Way Too Fantasy   Last year I read 104 books – I still have to catch up with my December reviews but hopefully I’ll soon be back on track.

So, my favourite reads of 2018.  I have cheated slightly and included 12 books but what can I say, it was difficult to narrow it down any further:

  1. Grey Sister by Mark Lawrence
  2. The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden
  3. The Poppy War by R F Kuang
  4. The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar
  5. Age of Assassins and Blood of Assassins by RJ Barker
  6. The Bitter Twins by Jen Williams
  7. The Tower of Living and Dying by Anna Smith Spark
  8. You Die When you Die by Angus Watson
  9. Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
  10. The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell
  11. Sworn to the Night by Craig Schaefer

I love that one of your self published books made it to your favorites list, how cool! It was such a great year for books, right? I loved Trail of Lightning and The Silent Companions so much, and I NEED to read You Die When You Die and The Poppy War.

It certainly was a great year for good books and I already have a good few really promising looking books lined up so here’s hoping 2019 is just as good.
      Happy New Year Tammy.
      Lynn 😀

It’s a cracking list, Lynn. I recall you passionate recommendation of The Silent Companions – I’ve made a note to get hold of a copy. And yes, I’ll agree with Tammy – 2018 was an awesome reading year again:))

    • @lynnsbooks

It was a great year for books and 2019 looks as though there are going to be some equally great books available.
      Lynn 😀

I know! It’s wonderful that the quality just goes on being fabulous – particularly in SFF:))

      • @lynnsbooks

It feels like SFF is booming at the moment – or perhaps I’m just biased.
        Lynn 😀

      • sjhigbee

No… I think you’re right. I reckon SFF is booming, too:))

Great list, Lynn! I’ve only read 2 of them, but loved both Trail of Lightning and The Poppy War. I think both of those are making many best of lists I’ve seen and I’m glad to see it. I have heard so many great things about Jen Williams, I need to pick up some of her work soon.

Thanks for the shout out as well! I’m finding that list so useful I think I’m going to make it a page on the blog for easy reference, lol. Happy New Year~!

    • @lynnsbooks

That’s a good idea – I know that I’ve seen another couple of lists that I also liked but for the love of Pete can I remember where I’ve seen them. Of course not! Dagnabit.
      Lynn 😀

I’m really hoping to enjoy Grey Sister more than Red Sister! Fingers crossed.

  5. Barb (boxermommyreads)

Some really good books here. I really need to check out the Lawrence series. I’ve heard really good things about Red Sister. Hope you have an awesome 2019!

    • @lynnsbooks

      Hi Barb
I hope you have a fantastic 2019 and it’s everything that you could wish for
      Lynn 😀

  6. Book Club Mom

Happy New Year to you too! Your list looks like it’s full of exciting reads. I’m looking forward to having a good reading year – best wishes for lots of book time!

Happy new year, Lynn! Narrowing it down to 10 or even 12 books would have been impossible for me, so I didn’t even bother restraining myself and just threw all my favorites and standout reads into one post, lol! I see we have a lot of overlap in our lists – The Silent Companions, The Poppy War, Trail of Lightning, and of course, the RJ Barker books!

    • @lynnsbooks

There was some very good books this year and it was definitely difficult to narrow it down – I almost gave in and did a second and third (and fourth – who am I kidding) list but then told myself no.
      Lynn 😀

I’ve had Age of Assassins on my Kindle for a while and never picked it up. I don’t think I had seen it mentioned often, and that’s why I’ve been dismissing it? Now I’m really excited to read it! Grey Sister was definitely on my favorite books of the year list too. I can’t wait for the third book to be released.

    • @lynnsbooks

Seriously, the RJ Barker books are so good. I loved the first two and just need to pick up the final one now – which I will do very soon. I hope you get a chance to squeeze them in, I’d like to know what you think.
      Lynn 😀

  9. DJ (@MyLifeMyBooksMyEscape)

No surprise seeing Mark Lawrence at the top of that list 😉

  10. maddalena@spaceandsorcery

Barker’s Assassin trilogy has been one of the best series I read lately, and I can’t wait to hear what you think about the third and final book: just brace yourself for some strong emotions – that is, stronger than in the other two volumes… 🙂
    Have a great 2019!

  11. Carmen

We have The Silent Companions in common. I would love to read The Mermaid…, and The Girl in the Tower. May your 2019 bring lots of shiny new books and great reading! 🙂

    • @lynnsbooks

And may your 2019 bring likewise plus lots of great films and tv.
      Lynn 😀

  12. jessicabookworm

A happy and a blessed 2019 to you Lynn. I wish you more great reading. 😀
