Weekly Wrap Up : 25/02/18
Hi everyone. Hope you’ve had a good week. I’ve had a good week if fairly quiet. I’ve read a little and caught up on some of my reviews – but then of course if you’re still reading you’re never really catching up are you? We’ve been watching some old black and white films – in fact we’ve decided to go on a mission to watch the top 250 films on IMDB. We’ve already watched quite a few on there but this involves stepping out of our comfort zone to watch things we probably wouldn’t ordinarily choose. So, in the past week we’ve watched Casablanca and Sunset Boulevard, which we hadn’t previously seen. Difficult to believe and it feels like we’re probably the only people in the world not to have seen Casablanca – one thing that stands out immediately is the amount of quotes and sayings that clearly originated from that movie. Wow. Also, obviously these films are dated but they keep your attention and the stories are good – they have to be because they’re not simply relying on special effects. I think the next two films on the list that we haven’t seen are Citizen Kane and North by Northwest. Anyway, to the reading. I’ve completed three books this week:
Books read:
- Semiosis by Sue Burke
- Between the Blade and the Heart by Amanda Hocking
- The Hunger by Alma Katsu
Next Week’s Reads:
- Planetfall by Emma Newman
- Kin by Snorri Kristjansson
- The Bitter Twins by Jen Williams
Upcoming reviews:
- Starborn by Lucy Hounsom
- Envy of Angels by Matt Wallace
- The Chrysalids by John Wyndham (Vintage Sci Fi book)
- Pilgrimage to Skara by Jonathan S Pembroke
- The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale
- Blood of Assassins by R J Barker
- Semiosis by Sue Burke
- Between the Blade and the Heart by Amanda Hocking
- The Hunger by Alma Katsu
I’d love to know what you’re reading this week.
You read a great lineup this week! I’ve seen a lot of great reviews for those. I hope they all worked for you.
Well, they were certainly all very different reads which was good.
I wouldn’t say the Amanda Hocking book really worked out for me – which was a shame. The other two are excellent, thought provoking books.
Lynn 😀
Wow! That’s some serious reading to get 3 books done each week! I hope to achieve that each month!!!
Your movie venture sounds like fun! Have you stopped watching one yet because it was just awful? Or do you see it through?
Well, my reading tends to be a bit like a mountain range, dips and peaks. Some weeks four books (not very often) and occasionally just one. Two is more like the norm but every now and again three. The movies – so far so good. I won’t make myself watch one if I’m not enjoying. We’ll see how it goes.
Lynn 😀
I can’t wait to hear what you think of The Hunger and Semiosis! I’d love to go back and watch the old classic movies I’ve missed as well, it’s been years since I saw Casablanca😁
It was good – I’m quite enjoying watching these films. I’ve always sort of thought ‘no’ and just avoided certain ones. But we’ve finally decided lets go back through this list and see which ones we haven’t seen. So far so good.
The Hunger and Semiosis were so very different and yet so very similar in terms of uniqueness and thought provoking content. Both very good.
Lynn 😀
I just finished reading The Hunger! It reminded me of an Oregon Trail and zombie apocalypse mash up.
Haha, yes, I can see what you mean. It was very bleak but also quite unputdownable!
Lynn 😀
Ooo Lynn, I also managed to get my hands on a copy of Kin by Snorri Kristjansson, although I’m not sure when I will get to it yet. As for my own reading, over the last week, I finished reading The Dragon’s Blade: The Reborn King by Michael R. Miller and I have made a good start to Six Tudor Queens: Katherine of Aragorn, The True Queen by Alison Weir. Happy reading! 🙂
I look forward to your review of The Dragon’s Blade. Happy reading this week.
Lynn 😀
Thank you 🙂
The Hunger sounds terrifying — looking forward to your review!
It’s a very unusual book and very well written. Quite compelling to be honest.
Lynn 😀
Wow, three books completed this week! Way to go! I’m really looking forward to The Hunger, hoping to make some time to read it in early March.
It’s a good read, very intriguing and again based on a true story (I think).
Lynn 😀
You have a great reading week coming up – I, too, am looking forward to reading The Bitter Twins. As for your film list – you have some real gems to watch. I love a lot of those classic black and white films – the characterisation and narrative are wonderful, because they rely on solid storytelling to get their message across.
Thanks – hope we both love the Jen Williams book – I’m sure that it’s going to be great.
Lynn 😀
I do, too… I’m currently reading Blunt Force Magic:)
I can’t wait to read The Hunger and I’m excited to hear your thoughts on Kin. It has caught my eye a time or two.
I loved both – I finished Kin yesterday and it was brilliant. A murder mystery with Vikings. Hell yes. And more to follow.
Lynn 😀
” if you’re still reading you’re never really catching up are you?” Haha, this comment pretty much sums up my life! I was just telling someone yesterday that I have 5 reviews I need to write but don’t want to stop reading long enough to write them. Oh and I have not seen Casablanca yet either so you’re not alone. I do hope to watch it someday. Hope you have a wonderful week!
Thanks – you too.
Yeah, I wrote two reviews in the last few days but then read three new books in the last week! And, yes, I don’t want to stop reading to start writing. It’s a conundrum.
